Reminds me of the woman at HP Germany where I gave a training many years ago. When we talked about a cooling fan, she asked: "Does it suck or blow?" Yes I was able to control my face, but it was hard.
I once heard a small child ~1990 (before such fowl language was commonplace) say "This wind sucks". His mother answered, and I can still hear her, "No, it blows".
If a company is not auditing the computers it allows on their network, then they are a open network.
Is it the fault of the user who brings a notebook with a virus on it that infects the entire network, or the IT staff for not insuring he was running anti-virus before allowing him access?
It is the fault of the IT staff for running a system vulnerable to such attacks. First rule of security: everyone is attacking you, especially those you trust.
The type of harm differs, Captain Obvious, but in both cases you have intentionally prepared something that is likely to cause an illegal act if stolen.
So, what you are saying, is that the picture taking feature should be disabled too, because the theif just might be 16 years old and naked when he powers on your machine? Because that's kiddie porn right there.
I recall working at a university, in which every PC had a public IP address. I clearly remember a Windows 2000 server being pwned during installation. As in before the install process even finished.
How did you know that the system was compromised? It's been a long time since I've installed any version of Windows, but I don't remember any "you've been pwned" message facility.
Naturally the stealth bomber's software has to be rewritten for the new platform, in particular the operational flight program (OFP) - the app which lets the ungainly plane fly, rather than lurching out of control as it would without constant computer assistance. (A recent B-2 crash shortly after takeoff at the Pacific island of Guam was caused by a false sensor data feed into the OFP, resulting from an airspeed measuring device being affected by tropical moisture. The duff data fooled the OFP app into wrecking the $2bn bomber - while the pilots were unable to do anything to stop it.)
uh... you're supposed to get a Mac if you want to feel like an elitist-asshole... duh. Preferably a Macbook Air with solid state drive... $5000 or so... then install Linux on it.
I hope that it boots from USB. The only place to put a CD-R in that thing is between the keyboard and the monitor, with the lid shut.
I have been living this reality for awhile now. My parents and grandparents use Ubuntu (I forced/tricked it onto them), and are getting along just fine. When it comes to basic computer use, Linux has been ready for the Desktop for about a two years. I myself cannot stand using it, since all the weird apps I use only work with Windows. I like Linux, but it is the applications that are important, not the operating system.
Have you written to those applications' developers and inquired about Linux support? If you don't ask for it, they won't know that you need it. What apps?
I think we may have spawned a whole new genre of geeky pr0n. Personally I'll wait for "I_banged_my_friends_sister_while_she_recompiled_her_kernel.mpg".:)

Two of the orbiters (Atlantis and Discovery) have tanks that are on the verge of exploding each time they are launched. They are only filled to 80% capacity until just a few minutes before launch, when the pad is cleared of non-critical personel. They (the tanks) were designed for 10 years, and have been flying for over 20. The tank vendor is DOA and there is no choice: the orbiters have to stop flying.
Actually, you clearly stated "hardware doesn't support home-burned CDs", not "BIOS". I just read it wrong.
I've seen USB CD readers, I think marketed for Sony VAIO laptops (and possibly for the Mac Air). You might try to score one on ebay. Er, scratch that, I doubt that you can boot that thing from USB...
Now Linux drivers can be written for the hardware. Just like TFS says.

Not sure if you're being funny or just forgot to escape the characters. Apologies if I ruined a joke.
Hey, I am an escaped character, you insensitive clod!
INCONCEIVABLE!
You keep using that word. I do not think that it means what you think it means.

As the OP said, just don't browse the web while you're doing a server install.
Yeah, let's see YOU install Gentoo without browsing the web.
If this is Windows XP, why isn't there an article on the time-to-own for an unpatched RedHat 8 install?
Can you still buy Redhat 8?
Can you still buy Windows XP?

Slashdot the spammers!

How will we know when we hit peak oil? The day we drill ANWR & American coasts we'll have hit peak.

Big Oil has been buying and burying patents for 50 years.
So Ballmer can't patent it? There's prior art?
Do I get a cookie?
Note if you're using NoScript
What does it run? It would be interesting if it was embedded Linux, because there would be so much you could do with it (server, etc)
Do you mean to ask "But does it run L****?"?
I don't really care what it runs. It's a slashvertizment. Call me when C|Net or Taco or Ars or someplace that I've heard of reviews it.
I trust (pun intended)....
Nobody cares if your puns were intended.
...by the time I'm considering Vista it'll be lying in a shallow grave from the sound of things.
Then you could probably install it by now.
No, the O in gnome stands for goatse !
I will never be able to look at the word GNOME again.

I will mod the OP up as soon as he installs aspell:

Today security around the president is so much better than it used to be, the risk is not as great as it once was.
So has the lumberjack profession become safer in recent decades. Just ask OSHA.
