  1. Re:Why wait for 22nm? on Intel Moves Up 32nm Production, Cuts 45nm · · Score: 3, Interesting

Just a guess of mine. But the fact of the matter is that some semiconductor phd's out their think that the end of the line is coming for the reduction in device feature size. I believe my professor last term said he figured the end would come around 22nm mark not much further. I could be wrong about the exact number (i hated that class). But the point is once the end of the line is reached. Profits hit a brick wall and the whole industry may take a nose dive. Right now every year there is bigger and better being released. But what happens when technology stagnates? There will probably still be progress but the rate of progress will likely be slowed substantially. In short semiconductor companies may be in a race. But none of them want to finish that race.

To me as an individual i always enjoy it when when a random event occurs and it helps me. Conversely i always hate it when a random event occurs that hinders me. Im not sure why more game designers dont realize this simple fact of human nature. A real world comparison of this would be doing some auto repair. Some individuals enjoy it most individuals would be happy if they found 10 bucks under there car once they had it up on a jack. Not too many people would be too happy if some jerk randomly came over and kicked the jack out from under the car. Particularly if you were still under there

  5. North East on Job and Internship Salary Comparisons? · · Score: 1

Last summer i was earning around $20 a hour the summer before that around $17 and now as a graduate student im expecting around $30 an hour (my schools average intern wage is $30 an hour for grad students in my department). Im a EE but around here the CS students make around as much as us EEs. Worth noting, a lot of major defense contractors are up around here. So not only do we get paid well but if your lucky like I was you can end up a sweet security clearance at the age of 20. In general your school's career development center should have statistics

I go to another tech school (WPI) and its pretty much the same except its called management engineering. Many people even within the major will admit that the amount of work is a joke compared to many other majors at my school. This program is even moderately well ranked within the US. Itâ(TM)s not an uncommon joke for someone to say that they want to switch their major to MGE (management engineering) where they have to do little work and get paid better. I know personally several individuals who have done this and never regretted their decision. With business degrees of various kinds easier to get and significantly more lucrative it reduces the number of the best and brightest who would want to work in the field. If an individual is smart enough to become an engineer or scientist they are smart enough for just about any career and these other careers often pay better and are more enjoyable to work. There are few external reasons left for an individual to choose a career in engineering or the sciences
