  1. Why not use Thin Clients & Blade Servers? on Experiences with Replacing Desktops w/ VMs? · · Score: 1

Why not use a more centralised approach, with a rack of blade servers running the client VM machines, load balanced using VMWare and thin clients on the desktops?

This means replacing the users desktop hardware is very easy, they can use 'their' PC image from any Thin Client on the network, or over VPN from home, and to wipe and reload their PC is automated from within VPWares consoles.

Sorry to break your little programming heart, but HP's firmware is shit.

We have run into so many problems with them it's amazing.

How about the HP RAID array which won't rebuild with the firmware shipped with DL380's when you replace a drive, until you upgrade the firmware and perform manual steps.

Or DL380 the servers Running a standard install of Windows Server 2003 which send the server to sleep, and never wake up, until you manually reboot them. That firmware update didn't come out until 4 MONTHS after we discovered it.

And it wasn't exactly a bizzare combination of server hardware/OS

So, yes, that DO actually step out of their 4 bedroom houses with their perfectly mowed lawns and think, lets commit suicide in the name of my beliefs.

The articles title says: EU deal threatens end to US dominance of internet. However, reading the actual article, you see that it says that EU made a proposal, the US said no way. The EU can make any plans it wants with any other countries, but unless the US agrees, they're left out in the cold.
This is exactly why people in other parts of the world want to kill you. Your either with us or against us. How about if people actually want a say in how we run things, actually want to ensure our health care, communication or tax systems which are all now based on the internet continue to run - and run without the US Federal Governement in sole control?

I don't think it's cynical as much as truthful. I read this and nodded my head in agreement, I've tried lixux every year for the past 3 or 4 years, and have found it more and more usable - but the basic stuff STILL DOES NOT WORK.

Example - squid proxy can now log users on via active directory, but cannot LOG this information - it logs all the other fields, but puts unknown when listing username, even through it logged them on!

The basics for home and corporate users is still sorely missing in Linux and OSS projects.

I have installed about 20 of these fine things, and the amount of bugs and hotfixes we have found and needed to get it amazing. Microsoft Proxy Server only had ONE security hole. In fact, Proxy Server v1.0 was a single DLL which slid into IIS4! Proxy Server 2.0 SP1 could fit on a floppy. The problem is everyone uses ISA, because no other firewall I have found can provide the following. 1. Basic Reporting on Users (jo used x MB and went to these web sites.) 2. Tie in to Active Directory, so we don't have to setup and maintain another directory.
