  1. Re:Good, but on Reviews: Star Trek · · Score: 1

Star Trek already has established multiple ways of travelling back in time. Why not reuse one rather than inventing more. Wormholes I believe are the most scientifically feasible; time-space can be different at each end. This would happen for example, if one end of the wormhole aged faster than another, say it had travelled at close to the speed of light for a while. Blackholes generally depending on the size either spaghettifies or traps you in time before the event horizon. Also as far as I know the idea that things that go in to a blackhole come out a whitehole is outdated. Hawking radiation allows some "information" to slowly escape but not a ship the size of Nero's. IANAP (not a physicist).

Another spoiler: Oh and what was old Spock doing before Kirk rocked up? Just hanging? (yeah I forgive all of these silly things 'cause it was a good movie)

  3. Re:Good, but on Reviews: Star Trek · · Score: 1

I loved this movie. Very fun and pretty true to Star Trek. The aliens actually looked less human-like which made parts feel Star Wars-ish.

    Spoiler warning!

    Some parts were stupid:
Travelling through time via a black hole?
When being pulled so fast that the ship is held stationary at warp speed, dumping the warp core would mean the ship would be snapped back into the pulling force, it isnt.
Old Spock's reason for not going with Kirk is silly given what was at stake.
Diving from space onto a platform within the atmosphere: why didn't they burn up?

Anyway, I still loved the movie and will watch it again some day. I look forward to a sequel.

We musicians no longer need record companies or corporations such as Apple. I just recently released an album Politics Apocalypse available free to download at our website. It is licensed with the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Licence, which even lets you use it freely for commercial projects (so long as you give credit). Unlike the Radiohead music our music is released via creative commons. Free even for commercial uses. http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/ I agree this is a cool thing to do but Radiohead charge people to download the sources to remix their album, they have said that the preferred way of listening is to buy the CD - not the mp3s, etc etc... Check out bands such as Nine Inch Nails to see a way of making $ while being nice to the fans.

LegalTorrents do provide a seed also. We accept donations directly from our site but yeah if they manage to get someone to donate through their site I don't really mind giving them 15%. As I stated in my other post we have our music there.

I have found flickr pretty good for finding creative commons licensed images. I am sure other similar site exist. I think bittorrent is better suited for collections of files (or very big files) rather than single images.

Yeah. Sorry to sound spam-ish. At least it is on-topic spam :). I can say that in all of my dealings with the guys that run LegalTorrents they have been helpful and friendly. It is a great way to release music and the creative commons license is great. Not the best way to make money (I have been playing around with ways to try to make money while giving away my music) but a great way to be heard.

  16. the old business model is broken... on Would You Rent a Song For a Dime? · · Score: 1

Although it is obvious that the old business model is broken it is not clear which alternative models will work. I am currently trying out a free music approach. As I stated in a comment yesterday, last month I released Politics Apocalypse, a full length album using the creative commons licence attribution 3.0. This allows you to use the music however you please (including in commercial projects) so long as you give credit. Promotion has gone really well and we have had > 3500 full album downloads since then. We have a name-your-own-price CD; which is a unique concept where you can name your own price (starting at cost price) for a CD. And we accept donations. However, so far the number of donations and CD orders are MUCH lower than the number of album downloads and positive feedback. We have just added a new members area of the website. The members area contains new songs as they are finished, available to members long before they are released in album form to the rest of the world. Anyone who supports us by donating, ordering a CD (name-your-own-price) or submitting creative feedback are given an account. Hopefully this new addition will encourage donations. So while charging people "for nothing" (as the post is tagged) is clearly not the best idea, it is not clear what alternative is. We do have to keep trying out new ideas, until it becomes clear how the music "business" can work without the "industry"; record labels who rip off artists and consumers by charging exorbitant amounts for music in an outdated format (CDs, DRM). The statistics of downloads/orders etc are on the website. http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/ [politicsapocalypse.com]
