  1. Possible weaponization? on Targeted Sound Beams · · Score: 5, Funny

I only hope that this won't be adopted by RIAA.

Removable storage: Rewritable DVD and -- yes -- the unsinkable 1.44MB floppy

If you'd have even only CD-writer, why the heck buying something as slow, low-space and unrealiable as floppy ? Bootable CD's replaced diskettes long time ago, and so does cheap home networking. I haven't used floppy for past 3 years.

Internet connection: Cable or DSL broadband if you're lucky; 56-kbps modem if not

    Pretty apocalyptic vision.

Good point ? Sure. But that is what EVERYONE is saying since the music itself evolved. I sure want to pay the artist, but i really don't want pay to some parasitic organisation, which isn't really doing anything for the artists, just taking off THEIR money. When will THEY realize it ?

  4. Re:Just how much is 144 PB? on Linux Breaks 100 Petabyte Ceiling · · Score: 1

The only problem is that we're running out of prefixes in the long term. Hey, scientists! Could you make some new, shiny words for this ? The 'giga' and 'tera' is good ones. The 'peta' however, doesn't sound like something i would put in my ftp's motd.

  5. Re:MAPS? on EFF speaks out against MAPS · · Score: 1

The problem is that if it should be effective, it must be applied on servers and mailing list robots, which doesn't offer this opinion to end-users.

  6. EU on Preserve Your Rights Online - Act Now · · Score: 1

Nice howto. Maybe someone should wirte similar text regarding to EU, which is just accepting laws they saw in US newspapers. Our country isn't in EU yet, but in short term it will probably be, and i am scared which rights i'll have after that. It is strange: i live in postcommunistic country and i have more (IT) rights then people in countries which have democracy tens or hundreds years ..

  7. Re:Great. on Australian Court OKs International Net-Defamation Suit · · Score: 1

Well interesting. Many states are now thinking about how to propagate their laws on internet, including US (btw. Free Dmitry!) and EU members.
I think that the Final World War(tm) won't be about land or resources, but Internet itself.
After massive nuclear destruction, there remains only Taliban (without internet it's not lucrative target), and fundamentalists will be teaching 'Look, internet killed 7 miliard people! Freedom is bad!'.

Yes, i have such visions 24 hours a day ;)

Searched the web for god. Results 1 - 10 of about 24,900,000. Search took 0.18 seconds.

Now, who could say internet is full of child porn ?

  10. Ok, i'll move to UK then ... on A Study on Regional DSL and Cable Speeds? · · Score: 1

Here, in Czech Republic (no it's not in Africa, it's next to Germany ... yes, Germany is in mid-europe), tehere is NO DSL, only one company is making Cable network (slow, many users). For $80/month you can get 28.8 analog link form 'Czech Telecom' (which is company which was monopolized by law until 1.1.2001) ... and it's only wires. So there is only one high-speed (for UK people low-speed) solution and that is wireless. Sad. I have that 28.8 leased line and i would be like for even 128kps at $100/month.
