Sometime in the 1970s I participated in a study made at the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden). Then it was found that a yellow(ish) text on a brown background was easiest on the eyes. The reason for this was/is that the human eyes are most sensitive in the yellow/neon wave-lenghts. Therefore the contrast between background and text, and the brightness of the screen could be set lower - and this made it possible to use the terminal for a longer time with no ill effects. This was done before colour terminals were available. A similar experiment today may well bring up an even better colour combination.
