We have Back Office 4.0 and run an Exchange server here. It came with Outlook98 and the licensing states the we have licenses to run it on every machine we had access licenses for. After Office 2000 was released we were sent a license to upgrade all our machines to Outlook 2000 (at least the ones we have Backoffice licenses for). I'm not sure if this is the same for standard version(s) but this is how it worked for Back Office 4.0. Of course this isn't a cheap option but it is the one that was here when I got here. I'm really interested on people's results with Openmail so I can look at that instead of upgrading this Exchange server.
This isn't going to be a strictly Linux but I have used it to test Win2k server into an NT4 domain. I just ordered the server a little healthier than I would have and set up several servers on this box. I was trying to incorporate a Win2k proxy into my NT4 PDC, samba servers, etc. VMware was a lot better than buying a bunch of hardware for R&D when it came time to ask for approval on the purchases.
This is a bank so I have a lot of legacy programs that are Windows, DOS, etc. and I love the flexibility to test and run multiple OS's so I can move the appropriate system and OS into place. I'm not saying that Win2k is better than Linux, BSD, etc. but my choices where either Win2k or NT4 (from the top) so you tell me which is the better choice for that. Our mainframe is Unisys and they are pushing NT/2000 for everything and a lot of the software solutions are for NT/2000 and will soon be 2000 only. I will continue to use *nixish solutions whenever possible and as long as they continue to fit the needs.
There is some persistence if you play a FPS that supports ngWorldstats like UT or Q2. I have stats in there even though I haven't played online for months. It breaks down everything. Weapons used, frags, game type, rankings, etc.
That's why I run invisible spawning on my UT server. You have 3 seconds to find some cover. I have thousands of frags with a sniper rifle but I think camping a spawn is a cheap way to play. The goal is not to get the most frags any way possible but it to have fun getting all the frags you can.
An industrial SLI Voodoo2 for simlations. Using Quantum3d's subsystems you can use multiple cards together for more realistic simulators, arcade, etc. This is the same thing you can do with their current products using 3Dfx's VSA-100 chips. They don't have any individual boards for end-user sales but maybe you could try convincing them that you need a board for upgrading your subsystem.
I used to buy a lot of Diamond products but it's crazy what has happened with them. No more Voodoo, Aureal has trouble and eventually goes under and then S3 comes along and buys them up. I didn't have to think to long between their Savage or TNT lines but I did have to consider my options when they had 3dfx products.
I'm not sure what to think about the current state of S3. They spin off the video cards, the audio cards are rumored to be dropped and they change their name. Doesn't give me any warm fuzzy feelings when thinking about them.
They have a couple choices. Promax is making/converting a Matrox G400 Max for Mac and don't forget about Formac's Proformance series. The Proformance4 is supposed to be a good OpenGL video card next quarter. You point is still correct in that the choices are slim.
I wonder if Aliaswavefront knows something we don't about the video for Mac situation. They are releasing Maya 3 for OSX early next year (and Linux too). Running Maya with an ATI Rage 128 or even a Radeon will seriously limit what it is capable of. I've seen Maya demoed on an Irix SGI and my brother-in-law is currently running Maya 3 on NT with a 3Dlabs Oxygen RPM video card. He is a huge Mac fan and the rest of his software is already on his G4. He wants to switch it over to his Mac and I'm his technical support so I have been looking into the options. I don't have a Mac of my own but have become more interested as time goes on. I guess I will need to renegotiate my salary before I buy a G4.
If you follow a link from their website to the store which is actually at emusic you can download this song free and a couple others. You can buy songs individually for $.99 a piece but then you would miss out on some gems.
I love playing Unreal Tournament with an ATI Rage ProLT chipset on a laptop. Actually I did try it but it worked much better in software mode. This actually sounds like a good thing
Are you sure you aren't thinking about the Walmart version of Mandrake that is actually 7.2 beta3? I'm running 7.2 on an Abit KT7 Raid with a MX300 sound card. This setup could have some potential setup issues but Mandrake went through it easily and is solid with KDE. I haven't crash KDE yet and wonder what causes other peoples issues. I've always leaned toward Gnome but haven't spent more than a half an hour in it since I installed KDE2. It's not that it is bad but I just haven't felt the need. They both seem on very even footing right now.
They didn't originate the ideas. They were part of a group that agreed not to enforce patents on the resulting products. Rambus left and patented everything they could get and are now sueing the other members and everyone else that comes along.
I was really liking Qnx until I upgraded my mb to an Abit KT7 Raid. I hope they get drivers for the Highpoint raid controller. I will try it our some more on my PPro system but guess I will have to wait to check out the DVD playback in Qnx.
I've never had trouble getting Tomsrtbt on a floppy. I just did it the other night with a 2 year old floppy(Imation). Are you using generic disks? A lot of 1.72Mb floppies go either to cheap disks or a floppy drive not supporting it.
If you buy generic crap then you have no right to complain about a system that isn't rock solid. I will only buy quality parts for my systems. I haven't seen all the problems with Windows that I hear people whining about. I built a fairly high end (at the time) 3d animation system for my brother-in-law. I built it with ECC memory. He complained that NT would experience crashes after it was 6 months old. Come to find out he had bought some cheap non-ECC ram and threw it in his machine without telling me. We pulled the mismatched RAM out and it hasn't crashed since. Ok, it crashed twice on a flakey program. He still goes on about how stable it is for NT. I keep trying to tell him that NT can be stable if you use good hardware and stable drivers.
Maya 3 is coming out for Linux in 2001 so he can dump NT but it is also coming for OSX and he will likely go that way because he has always been a Mac fan. Both are better than NT for this. Maya on NT is very cool though if you can't quite spend the bucks for Irix on a SGI machine.
Try Pricewatch. A lot of places are selling memory that is called high density. This memory only works on the newer chipsets. This is generally the cheaper stuff. Make sure you know what you are getting if you don't have a new chipset. You can get Micron PC133 256Mb for under $200.00 that will work most every board.
Where I used to work we had a OS/2 Warp 4 switch server. We used it to communicate between our AS/400 and Solaris 2.6 on the phone switch. I took OS/2 home and installed it on an old hard drive (long since gone now). I really liked it. I would buy a copy today but I haven't found it for less than $250.00. I haven't been looking for a server but just a desktop OS. This seems a little ridiculous to me considering low end machines that would run this like a champ are just a few dollars more.
Makes you think (or least makes me think) about running IPv6 on the network and doing a IPv6 to IPv4 tunnel out to the world. Just sit back wait for the rest of the world to catch up. I probably would do it if I could get support in all the OS's I run.
Money. It will get expensive in a hurry to replace all the routers that aren't up to IPv6 standards. Companies won't spend money until they absolutely have to. They must get the maximum return on their initial investment which means run those routers, etc. until they die or have become obsolete. The good news is that the new equipment is capable and so the ratio is climbing on IPv6 capable equipment every day. My company just leased all new cisco routers and could be ready soon. It isn't a requirement yet so we are still in testing mode and it will be on the back burner for awhile if nothing changes. Anyone want to buy a Motorola 6560 and nine 6520s?
Of course it has a ripper. Enable the wav plugin to write a wave file of what you are playing. You could burn it to CD now but of course you can already make a direct copy with the software you got with your burner. You would still need an encoder if you want MP3s.
Have you checked Xmms? It's every bit as good as winamp and it's for Unix. The plugins are coming along nicely. Winamp wouldn't be any better about the plugins because they would all have to be rewritten anyway to run on Unix. I really like the plugin that lets you use K-jofol skins with it. I also like the Palm Amp plugin. I like to use my Palm Pilot for controlling the music while I'm working on full screen programs.
Regular car has mechanical problem and now it sits on side of the road. Flying car has mechnical problem and you need to chose which one of these objects you would like to crash into (buildings, other flying/driving cars, pedestrians, anything). At least we won't have to dig a hole to put you in.
