Um, they were in RTP 10 years ago, but now they are in 2 buildings on Centennial Campus. Centennial is in fact an NCSU campus, and it's definitely not 30 miles down the road from main campus...it's right across Western.

I can see their building from my building, where I work for NCSU.

Also, yes, this does have quite an impact on our usage of Linux here at NCSU. Engineering students are required to take (or place out of) a linux-based basic computing course (E115 if I recall correctly), and Linux is supported everywhere there's an sysadmin who knows what's going on (which is NOT everywhere on campus - there are a bunch of people who aren't willing to learn Linux to support the users in their departments who want to use it). However, if you can't get support from your local sysadmin, you can often go to other resources on campus to get help.

As a couple other people have said, Kickstart is probably your best option. I work at NCSU and we have a bunch of linux machines. When we need to upgrade or reinstall, we just take a boot cd, pop it in, and let it go. It grabs all the configuration and install files off our kickstart server and goes to town. When it's done, the system reboots and sits at a login screen, no other config required. It's a beautiful thing.

Logitech. That's all I have to say right now. Their speakers are great for the price. If you want a 2.1 set, the 340s are great, and it only goes up from there, and they're affordable. Some sites have even rated the 560s (I think that's the right model number) as good as the Klipsch speaker sets which retail for a few $100 more. I've only listened to the 340s for any length of time, but for their size they're very nice speakers, with very good range and a nice wide cone of sweetspotness. So, depending on what type of setup you want, I'd recommend the Logitech series corresponding to it. Have fun!

If you have a Mac that requires an OS reinstall every 3 months - you either are on crack or you have some kind of defective hardware that's corrupting your install. For me, a reinstall of a MacOS has always been sometime after a new version comes out, and that's a painless process. Upgrading MacOS has never sucked too much. And it's not as though I don't use (and abuse!) my computers, and it's not as though I don't have multiple OSes...I have an XP box (2.4B P4) for gaming, an iBook (OS X) for my class note taking (tetex is good for Calc notes), and a RH 7.3 server (1.4 T-bird)(note: don't give me shit about using Redhat, I go to NC State University, and I *like* the people who work at Redhat - I know them on a personal basis. And besides, I don't think Redhat sucks). So yeah. I reinstall Windows much much much more often than I reinstall anything else. I do admit that I fuck with my XP box more often, but rarely do I do things that break it - it usually ends up being something I would never think would break the OS - like installing a program, using it a little bit, desciding that I don't like it, and unistalling it... that's not something that should hose an OS. And I know that's not completely Window's fault, but at least partially. I don't have a fucked up OS on my iBook, no matter how much I muck around with the insides (and I do, a lot...fink opens new doors :).

Apple has been moving more and more toward a "standard" platform since the time of the G3s. Doesn't mean people won't make it moreso. People already make G4 mobos that MacOS will install on, but it's more expensive to buy them & a proc than a standard PC mobo/proc. People *will* make it cheaper on x86, because there are more companies that have been doing it longer on the PC market than on the Mac market. So no, I'm not completely ignorant. My prediction is that it would be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to roll your own PC that MacOS would work on (assuming that they ported) than any other arch. Of course, I could be wrong, but I thought slashdot was all about the opinionated vocal minority doing what we do best - vocalizing our opinions? :P

  17. Uhm, no. on Pentium-Based Macs The Future of Apple? · · Score: 3, Insightful

For one, this has been rumored countless times before. Has it happened? No. Here's why.

One: Apple's revenue comes from it's hardware sales. If people can go out and buy plain vanilla PCs and install MacOS on them for significantly cheaper than they can buy a Mac, Apple's income will drop a great deal.

Two: As others have said, Apple's been with IBM and Mot. for a Very Long Time (tm). There have been rumors equally as valid as this one about apple developing it's *own* chip for fabbing at IBM (a company, unlike Mot., who can actually get decent yields).

Three: Again, as others have said, it's more probable that Apple will go with IBM's next-gen 64-bit desktop CPU. IBM makes good chips. They're not big in the desktop market, but the Power4 has been a big server chip for a while now, and with good reason. It was one of the first dual-chip-on-die procs that actually made public usage (afik), and did a large amount of ass-whipping.

To conclude: Apple going x86 would be stupid.
    Have a nice day.

If OSX were not so close to done, I would dualboot Yellerdog and 9.1, but hey. I only gotta wait till March. I think the hardware's the key. How many companies are gonna spend the money to overhaul all their hardware to bring it up to Mac OSX spec? Linux runs on anything, as it's designed to. Mac OSX runs on G3s and G4s with 128 MB of Ram, as it's designed to. Again, how many companies are gonna go and buy G3s or G4s (which cost more than your average PC, I mean....Maxed out G4 - $15,000...maxed out PC - ~$8,000. Thats a big freakin difference) just to switch to Mac OSX? How many CONSUMERS will? Sure, some might, but not enough to give Linux any trouble. Most of the people I've talked to say that they might get a Mac to try it out again, because of OS X, but not that they'd stop using other OSs.

I don't think OSX is gonna do anything but pique intrest in Linux, and vise versa. "Oh, you've always run Linux, but you like Macs for some reason? Try OS X. Close enough." "Oh, you like OS X, but you want to use PC parts? Try Linux with X. Close enough."
