... If birds and crocodiles managed to survive, then humans have a good chance, too....
Humans survived the more recent ones. But their civilization did not. They were probably reduced to eating their dead. Not a desirable outcome.
Consider the (small but non-zero) possibilty that the ones called "Angels", in the old stories, are the humans that escaped the previous extinction-level events by going to space.
... Best case someone is going to fire an AA missile at you which might end you right there....
Um... the AA missile -is- a killer robot ! All of this discussion is about stuff that has already happened. Just because they don't look like humans, is beside the point.
... Now a group of computer scientists and ethicists have used the halting problem to tackle the question of how a weaponized robot could decide to kill a human....
This reminds me of a logic calculation that "proved", back in the 1800's, that electric power could not be distributed across distance from a generator! 8-P In fact their logic was correct, they just had not specified the problem correctly. And of course we distribute power all over, nowdays.
X Rebirth was pretty much panned by everyone who was a fan of the previous X games. Consequently, it's the only one of the X games that I haven't bought at least once.
I'm playing X-Rebirth V2.51 right now. They have fixed most of the bugs and I am having fun. But if what you want is an FPS, this is not the game for you. It is your job to fix the economy, the devs start it off but you have to maintain it. It is not easy. But, with that sort of "live" universe, things can happen that even the devs didn't know about. Or you can just play the plots (plural), The update coming out in December has a third plot included, and more space. And it sounds like the other space games are coming out in even worse shape than X-rebirth was in ! 8-P
If anyone really want's to know why they let this guy post such long messages, just look at how many comments are in this thread!! 8-P You did it to yourselves...
The problem is that they spent ages trying to teach artificial "rules" of English and when kids just stuck with natural English, they concluded that "grammar teaching doesn't work"....
Not knowing the differences may be fine... Until you need to communicate that difference to someone else, accurately. Or, you need to write something that people expect to read very fast, without any stumbling over things. If you fail, they don't read it and you fail.
IDs issued by the Federal government, are what is illegal. State governments issue drivers licences, and most now issue "non-driver IDs", through the same system, for use by people that don't drive. I don't know if they are free, but I think the cost is lower. Other types of ID are also allowed, as long as they have a picture, and the organization is known. I think the local voter boards, here, can also issue picture IDs that work and are free.
Besides, all of the poor people around here have drivers licenses with pictures. A few people forgot theirs, but did a "provisional ballot" and brought the license in later.
The US state political parties send people to each polling place to watch what is happening. Both sides are watching all day, with different volunteers trading off shifts. Every step has watchers.
So how do they "watch" the electronic transfers?? In some states it is required by law, and they are deciding now whether to change the state law or just not use electronic machines.
Actually, it's the Democrats that assume the poor voters are too dumb to have ID. The Republicans know quite well that poor people have ID, because they use it to buy things from stores. The laws are just to keep "foreign spies" out. And to irritate the Dems... 8-P
Don't assume the user is an idiot. If you worked a day at their job, you would probably appear just as much an idiot, as they do talking about your job.
Besides, if they were really idiots, it would cause less problems!
Um... not any more. At least, some new PC's don't. But the Microwave doesn't have a "computer" (i.e.monitor and keyboard) connected to it. They do both look sort of like a "Harddrive", though. (As some businesses use the word...)
... We could have built a pretty big station out of the space shuttle main tanks, for example.
We sort of did, actually, back before the space shuttle. See "SpaceLab", I think it was. But it's hard to get them high enough, and it fell back years ago.
Let them go, it doesn't matter. The point is to learn how, if they didn't learn then they will flunk the next course. If they don't flunk, then either they didn't need that class, or the Professors are being lazy about how they do tests. In that case the whole school will get a failing grade, when it turns out none of the students can do anything.
The problem was that the plantation owners were the ones that knew how to keep the plantations going and trading with the outside world. Also, the new laws freed the slaves, but did not give them any land. It was freedom to starve.
The slaves knew that they could run the fields, but not the other logistics. Some of the plantations had Black overseers, who had the training and skills for more, but not everything. And most of the slaves didn't hate the owners, unlike the stories. At least in the areas that I had info on.
Also keep in mind that this was right after the war, and no-one was worried about pay. If you had food to eat, that was a big thing, even for the plantation owners. Many slaves left anyway, of course. But most made deals, and ended up owning the county.
Don't believe the propoganda about things, that everyone spouts. For instance, slavery was originally a humanitarian idea thought up by the liberals of the Ancient times in Greece, to stop armies from slaughtering all of the prisoners. Of course, good ideas have unforseen consequences, and eventually unscrupulous people started raiding just to get prisoners.
And, contrariy to popular belief, the slave owners were Democrats and Lincoln was a Republican !
... Also, offhand, I don't see how a gradual "free at birth" policy would operate in practice. Yes, on paper and in the aggregate, it could work. But what do you do with a generation of babies born to parents who are property? Who's going to raise these "free" children if not their enslaved parents?... No, I think such a plan would've perpetuated de facto slavery for pretty much all southern blacks, well into the 20th century....
I think you underestimate the Blacks. Plenty of them did that even before the civil war. Of course it required escaping, too. I don't think it would be a problem. Don't try to equate them to modern welfare families, that's a different environment.
"Imagine an alternate history where they demanded, not the immediate abolishment of slavery but a "born free" act where any child born in the U.S. was a free citizen regardless of parentage."
That sounds great for everyone, except the slaves.
You really think that destroying the plantation, that was their only source of food, was better for them? Even they knew better. Why do you think the "out islands" are mostly owned by Blacks, today? After the "war against the south", they made deals with the plantation owners, to keep the operations going as a shared work, where they worked for food with the payoff of owning the land in twenty years. And they did... But where the plantations were destroyed, everyone starved.
By the way, the slave ships were chartered out of Boston, MA and other northern ports. They were not southern ships. I have seen the shipping papers in the museum in Charleston, SC.
Actually, they are if the programmer writes code correctly. But half of the "smarts" must be in the OS's "task scheduler" that coordinates assigning processors to threads.
Note: A program is not a thread. A thread is not a processor. These are assigned dynamically as needed.

While I agree in general, just wondering: why concealed carry permits? Just because it's a subset of gun ownership records, or some more specific reason?
Everyone is safer, if the criminals don't know which citizens are carrying concealed weapons. That has been known for more than a hundred years, by people who know about guns. In fact, it is a major reason why open carry is no longer so popular as it once was. Some recent news items not withstanding...

Yes. When is the UK coming to annex the United States, since the vast majority of US citizens respond to questionnaires in English?
Um ... Muricans don't speak English. I are one, and 1 know. 8-)

I'm really not sure it puts out a good image of your product if a 5 year old can pass your professional certifications.
It either means your certs are weak sauce, or your product is lamentably simple.
I think it was a -very- unusual 5-year old.
You might want to remember his name, for later times... 8-)

... The one big problem is that we are not given free government-issued IDs that I am aware of.
Government issued IDs are illegal, in the USA. For good reason...
So, my US passport is illegal?!
No. But as I understand it, if they were required for everyone they would be illegal.

The Puerto Ricans told me, that they kind of liked not having to pay income taxes! 8-)
