The problem is, the first sale doctrine can arguably be only relevant to the CD and manual, because the wording used when selling these games to users is that you buy the game, but included is only one key for accessing their network, and once used, that key is locked to that user account, and cannot be used to create a new account. The company cannot stop you from selling your CD and manual, but if you've used the one time key, the buyer of your used game is out of luck (unless you give him the username, password, and all other required details to access the online account and essentially become you in the game world).
This is the same situation with school books that include a serial key for access to an online help system or online test preparation system... First Sale Doctrine covers the resale of the physical book and the physical CD, but the once and done serial key for access to the online system for 6 months is a consumable. Once consumed, it's no longer valid, so cannot be sent to the next person. First Sale Doctrine is still in effect (you can sell the non-consumed portion of the product), but the spirit of First Sale Doctrine has been buried under a pile of crap in both instances.

Everyone on Yammer in my company expects these sort of "anyone know how to work with technology X? I just got a new project in that calls for technology X, and before we go and hire a contractor, I wanted to see if anyone is interested in taking this on" or "Anyone seen this error before when adding PHP5 to IIS6? [error: blah blah blah]" types of messages. Those that know, answer.
Saves time, money, and effort, and those guys who snicker at team emails are less likely to snicker at someone asking something like this in the forum specifically designed for this type of question.
We all work better when we distribute the workload to utilize everyone's strengths so that everyone can remained focused on their strengths instead of wasting 10 times the effort trying to become a jack of all trades in and out of their official position. Communication through channels like this is key to getting the most done as a team.
I like analogies, so here's an analogy that shows how this type of strengths focused teamwork can get stuff done faster: Would it make sense for the foot to learn to write when the hand is far better suited to this task? The foot can learn, but it won't be as good as the hand, and it will could take many more weeks to get the task done than if the foot had just asked the hand to write something down real quick. Conversely, it would be ridiculous to ask the hand to take over for the foot. Yes, it can be done for short periods of time, but think of the precariousness of the entire body (group) while the hand is taking over this task for the foot!

Yep. My company so far has hired all locally, and at competitive rates, because they know you get what you pay for. Not saying that there are not amazing developers in other countries (I knew quite a few at my last job, in on work Visas on the company's dime because they were so good), but this company wanted to benefit the local communities and knew they could get solid workers locally who knew their stuff. 'course they've also got the corporate slogan of "Socially Conscious High Tech" and actually live it, so it's not your typical company.
Or have a wife who understands. Yes, they exist. My wife gets it, and we've already talked about handling this with the little ones ("Daddy's at work. You can't interrupt Daddy, but Mommy's here. What do you need?"). It's all about the support and love from the family. Without it, telecommuting would be a nightmare.

Some tech comes out, slowly is found to have limitations, is replaced by another tech that is completely radical in it's approach, eventually it has limitations too, is replaced by a reimagining of the first tech with some parts of the 2nd tech... it's a standard cycle alright.
Another (non-tech) example: Father is a taskmaster, strict, and prudish. Son is rebellious and becomes loose, overindulging, and 'free spirited'. Grandson reacts to Dad's overindulgence and lack of structure with a desire to "do better for my son", becomes strict and prudish... rinse, wash, repeat. It's not a "forgone conclusion" that things will go this way, but if you look, it seems the norm that a person will react to their parents' behaviors and do the opposite.
You'll also find our culture swings like this too... the puritan years of ~ 1890 - 1900, the "roaring 20's", the "good old days" of the 40s and 50s, the 60s (enough said), though in each swing, the overall move is to less prudish it seems, and the swings appear to be less of a violent black/white swing.
I guess the pendulum swing is just a part of human nature, but perhaps there is an equilibrium that can be reached that is best for all...

If one has done a thorough study of the bible, it becomes clear that the old testament laws are so strict and overwhelming precisely for the express purpose of showing that it is impossible to earn eternal life by abiding by all of these laws. This is why Jesus had to pay the price for every time anyone has broken any of these laws. He chose to take the full punishment of all of humanity on himself so that anyone who would choose to follow his simple commandments, some of which are "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself" and "Go into all the world and preach the good news", would be given mercy.
One way to look at it is that we start life with $0 in spiritual righteousness, and doing right does not earn anything (why should it? Doing right is simply what is expected of us for being alive), but doing wrong costs us, so we fall into debt immediately and can never get out, but Jesus came along and offered to pay off all the debt for us—all we have to do is believe he exists, believe he has the authority to forgive the debt (or can afford to pay it off), and allow him to do so. He pays off the debt, and asks us to live a life that will not incur additional debt. We will fail, but his grace and mercy pays the debt again and again. This means that though we will fail, we do not willfully choose to fail, knowing that it causes further cost to Jesus for our actions.
Hopefully this helps you see that the law is not there to bind us to it, but to remind us of our inability to pay off our own debt of sin, thereby reminding us of how much Jesus and God love us and are willing to do in order to free us from our own increasing debt.
It's not supposed to be a "good" story. It's supposed to be lessons for living life. It includes the good, the bad, and the ugly of what it is to be a human, and the hope that we can be forgiven for those wrong acts we do, and become the best human, and the best humanity, we can be.
As a person who believes what the Bible teaches, I still don't find the Bible a good "curl up in an armchair and read at leisure" kind of book. But I wouldn't curl up in an armchair to read (at leisure) a complex manual for a complicated device, yet if I needed to understand the device in order to make it work correctly, I would still read the difficult manual in a hope to understand it... that is, after all, what the Bible really is—a technical manual for living.
