  1. Biodiesel more at the pump? on Breakthrough in Biodiesel Production · · Score: 5, Interesting

Err, this seems backwards to me. Everytime I've seen bio available, it's been below standard diesel prices. Perhaps it's just a regional thing where I'm at, but I've been under the impression that the real problem with biodiesel was A) older fuel lines may be degraded more quickly by biodiesel, and B) producing enough to fuel the world's fuel needs was a big issue.

Of course, I'm no biodiesel guru, but it is of some interest to me -- I drive an older diesel (which I plan on converting to run on SVO, as soon as I get the facilities to make this feasible.)

  2. Resigned? on Prime Human Cloning Researcher Humiliated · · Score: 5, Interesting

I really fail to see how this is something worth resigning over. So, his assistants were a bit overzealous, and he didn't know about it until it was too late. Yes, he tried to cover it up, but did he try to fudge any of the research? Does this make his science bad in any way? Seems pretty silly to me.

  3. A nasty chain reaction? on Water Vapor Causing Climate Warming · · Score: 1

So, great. Water vapor is increasing global temperature as well. This is a wonderful reassurance, and it only serves to further the thought that things are going to go rapidly downhill from here.

Here's something else to consider: More tundra is thawing now than anytime in recent history. Arctic tundra is full of greenhouse gasses that have been locked away in the permafrost. Now, it's being released, and quickly. This might not be so disturbing, except for the fact that there is a staggering ammount of greenhouse gas frozen there, and as they warm things up, it only aids in the release of more.

It's pretty clear at this point that things are changing. Those who say otherwise generally have some reason to be blind to the trends that are becoming increasingly dramatic (and clear). The real question here isn't if it's happening.

The real question is: Has it reached the tipping point yet?

  6. Old Hat on Ready, Aim, HACK! · · Score: 1

I, for one, fail to be impressed by this. The idea of adding a scope/stock to a surveillance device isn't a new one -- I've done the same thing myself, but it wasn't pointed at bluetooth devices. Sure, it's a good idea, but there's nothing revolutionary here that I can see. Am I missing something? (Other than the 'wow kewl' factor)

I'm sure that that's in there somewhere, oh, yeah, look...there it is commented out above line 53,425 in the code. Yep.

  8. At UPS... on Company Christmas Gifts / Bonuses? · · Score: 1

We got a gift voucher for a turkey, and a little chocolate coin. The card stated that the CEO gave employees a $25 gold coin back in the early days (1920's. Do the math for inflation, not bad eh?) We also get completely slammed on a nightly basis by people's packages, starting the day after Thanksgiving and ending a few days after christmas.
I personally got a couple special gifts. One was a notification that they wouldn't pay my rent stipend of $100 for next month, and the other was a nice back injury. Yay for me.
UPS gets several billion in profit, and lots of cheap labor. Send your packaged FedEx, people. If you happen to be sending it 1 day air to Washington or New Jersey, I might be handling it. That's a very bad thing for your package, I assure you...well, unless you mark it with something I recognize.

The kicker? I don't even like turkey. Man, I need a new job.

  10. Framerates (somewhat O/T) on Organic LEDs to Supercede LCDs? · · Score: 1

Why would anybody _need_ to chug out 60 FPS? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the human eye a bit slower than that (30 FPS or less, IIRC)? If your hardware can keep up a steady 30 FPS, even in the worst of fragpits, why worry? Seems a bit of a waste if you ask me.
