  1. Re:Very true on The Case For Working With Your Hands · · Score: 1

I think the best blend would be an 'instrument technician for pharma/nuclear/oil&gas etc.. This involves systems for 'measurement and control aka flowmeters, valves, pressure, temperature, shutdown procedures, fire and gas systems... all sorts. These are all ripe for hands on mechanics plus the more technical side as control systems like Delta V and other forms of SCADA drive instruments towards more sophisticated tech.

    Just swap kindles?

  3. Re:Perhaps the giants are dying on Are Newspapers Doomed? · · Score: 1

In London there are now at least two free newspapers reliant on advertising. I can't walk two foot without being handed one or seeing it laid down on an underground seat. The feeling that it's free means it is disposable, and has no monetary attatchment, hence dumpable. I'd hate papers to go out of business but i hate the paper they use too.

  4. Wired magazine had an article... on Australia Developing Massive Electric Vehicle Grid · · Score: 1

I read in Wired magazine that the guy who made his money from SAP is starting a similar scheme in Denmark but actually changing the battery instead of charging 'your' battery. More like swapping so that the burden of owning a battery is gone and you rent batteries fully charged from him. Sounds interesting.

Actually the now Mayor Of London said that we should all definitely go abroad on our holidays saving precious slabs for a couple of weeks a years. 'In typically politically-incorrect style, Johnson said he would be going to somewhere "as sunny and foreign as possible" this summer' http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iS2b9DpPs6YG8KjbtvDCL81vVh0w I've never actually seen a 'worn out' pavement come to think, cracked maybe....

  6. iPhone for the win? on How To Encourage a Young Teen To Learn Programming? · · Score: 1

If i was ever going to learn to program besides a rough understanding of BASIC etc.. although thats where most people would start initially, then i would definitely go for the Apple SDK. Everything is there provided you have a mac which seems to be the trend amongst teenagers these days anyway. For free you get the SDK, a simulator to test it on and all the hardcore optimization programs. It is in objective C, which is harder to program but the market seems to be coming up pretty big these days for that because of Apple so if you are a newstarter with a fresh mind would it be that much more difficult? I mean for even a (relatively)simple project you could perhaps make some money or at least get a free app on the iTunes Apps page, now how cool would that be for a teen amongst his/her pals. I reckon this would be a winner. Some apps so far are extremely simple but popular. The hold button was in the top twenty at least which is basically hold the button for as long as you can without letting go, ala get a high score. Simply put a start stop timer button recording the highest variable. Now thats an easy program but on the iPhone/iPod Touch very very cool and fun!! p.s. i haven't found a way to cheat on it yet either gggrrrr.......
