  1. No Open IM yet, though on FCC Approves AOL-Time Warner Merger · · Score: 3
To quote from the PCWorld article:

"AOL will be allowed to continue blocking users of competing instant-messaging services from communicating with users of its market-leading instant-messaging services known as AIM and ICQ.

"Only if AOL extends its instant-messaging services to include multimedia features like videoconferencing would the company be required to allow communications between its users and users of competing services."

And since most people have no use for video-conferencing, this doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

  5. A multimedia BookPC on What's The Best Combo DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 Player? · · Score: 1

Its smaller than your average VCR, available in all black, comes with 5-channel audio and S-Video outputs (as well as the regular L/R and composite video), ethernet, modem, USB, wireless keyboard/mouse, and can get hooked right into your TV and stereo. With a nice large hard drive, you can store all of your cd collection as MP3s. Control things via the TV, monitor, or over the LAN. Its cheap and efficient.

  6. Index your pages on How Should Government Web Sites Be Designed? · · Score: 1

One thing I wish more sites did well is to index their pages with keywords and summaries. Then, have a quality search engine for the site. How many times have you gone to a site looking for something that you know is there somewhere, but can't find it? Its good that you're doing planning and not just throwing something up ad-hoc, so take the time to do everything right.

  7. Some istill free on My.MP3.Com's New Useless Status · · Score: 1

I am actually listening to my songs on my.mp3.com right now! They are thinking of doing several things (depends on what article you read). One is that you can have 50 songs for free, unlimited for $50. I'm certainly not going to pay twice for my own music. If they want me to pay to play, I'll just delete off my stuff and make mp3 cds. Another thing might be to play audio ads between songs on the free service. Thats not too terrible, but would be annoying (and it won't take long for someone to come up with a winamp plugin that just plays every other song).

I didn't mean a government, I meant a framework to guide the actions of ICANN. I'm sure they have something, but it obviously wasn't thought out well enough or we wouldn't be having all these problems.

  9. This does sound familiar on Emusic Tracking MP3s On Napster · · Score: 1
Its just like searching for people hosting Metallica songs except now they will be "checking" to see if its really a metallica song. Before, they were just doing a keyword search. The idea of verification that it really is a pirated song is good, now they just need something to find the fingerprint.

I'm not saying Napster or p2p is bad or good, I'm just saying that it needs work. As for it being a bot, since Napster wants to "comply" they'll surely let it run. But what about all the Napster and Napster Server clones?

  10. Not quite on Whistler MAY Refuse To Run All Unsigned Code UPDATED · · Score: 2
If you read the articles about it, they are considering it as an option. One of the security features that you can turn on and off would be installation of signed programs. As the article mentions, as soon as you have one little program that isn't signed that is critical, you'll turn it off and never use it again. Think of all the in-house developed programs out there.

The other issue is who certifies it. If its M$, then it would be considered a monopoly control (especially over competitors). Drivers are one thing, applications are another.

  11. Competition on all fronts on Corel Looking To Sell Linux Operations? · · Score: 1

Corel faces still competition on many fronts, office, graphics, and Linux. Back when their deal with Borland fell through I predicted that they'd be looking for more stategic partnerships, particularly in the Linux area. The only notable thing I've ever heard about Corel Linux is the ease of use of its setup program.

  12. Another control panel applet on Answers About Bastille Linux From Jon & Jay · · Score: 1
So when can we see Bastille as another control panel applet that comes with a default install? Especially if you work for Mandrake. Perhaps as part of the overall services applet for turning things on and off. Step 1: make your selections, Step 2: run bastille to see which of those you might want to reconsider.

I'd like to see a nice users manual (ok, it would just be a compilation of the how-tos) for distros telling you how to set things up and lock them down.

  14. Re:I Downloaded It on Netscape 6 Is Out (Really!) · · Score: 1

You mean like the Microsoft IE installers? Those let you download the components you want and even store them for later use (unlike a few others, like Quicktime). One benefit of the small downloader is that you don't have to download EVERYTHING and then only install a few parts. That was one thing I hated about the NS Communicator packages. It also made it harder to upgrade.

I won't be using NS6 until (1) the bugs are mostly out (2) its mozilla and (3) I can get rid of the sidebar, integrated IM and other add-ons i don't need. I just want a simple browser.

  15. Cards misaligned on Statistics, Elections, Frustration · · Score: 1

There were other problems. Apparently the little pieces of paper that were punched out were sometimes still dangling which also caused it to be misread. There is also an outcry of how the ballot was confusing and some people marked two choices.

My question is: What are the they going to do about the mess-ups? Can they hold another vote? Are the lawyers for both sides getting ready to appeal to a federal judge saying things were way to screwy?

China is a whole different boxen and has been for a very long time. It is a place where the government controls all, usually with an iron fist. Since most of the industrialized nations work on capitalism and not communism, control would never reach that point. We need laws with intelligence and forsight instead of bending to the wills of the big spenders.

    And yes, I voted today.

  19. Its a crackdown on MS To Virginia Beach: Prove You Own Your Software · · Score: 1

Lately there have been commercials on TV encouraging that people verify their software is legal, especially in businesses. In large environments its a lot easier to distribute software.

If your company uses images, you should be keeping track of what is on each system. When it comes time to upgrade machines, its important to know what exists in a heterogenous environment.

IMHO M$ isn't concerned with one or two copies, but rather large organizations.

  20. Only a clone away on Napster Going to Subscriptions · · Score: 1

There will have to be some fundamental changes in the Napster network for them to really track. What if I download a song from someone and its junk. So I download it from someone else. Does it count twice? What if my download aborts?

What about the Napster client clones like knapster? Since Napster doesn't officially support Linux, will it be left out in the cold once they switch? What about the Napster server clones, like OpenNap?

Lock it up in the first place. All laptops should be anchored to something immovable as long as you're not walking around carrying it. If you are carrying it, don't let go. Basic principles people. I work for a company that would get fined by the federal government if some of our data got out (probably over privacy violations). Laptops are meant to be taken home. And even then, if its got important stuff, lock it down.

  23. With a remote control too on Wireless mouse+keyboard+gamepad · · Score: 1

I recently bought a Multimedia BookPC that came with a wireless keyboard. It also came with a separate remote control. The mouse on the keyboard is an eraser-type, not very precise. In Linux, they mouse occasionally starts clicking and right-clicking on its own under X. I never even thought about the drivers for it, it just worked automatically. The remote control, although it has buttons for play control like fast forward, stop, etc, only seems to have a few things work. It, too, has an eraser mouse, and the volume controls work.
Ergonomically, the keyboard can be a little awkward when you are used to a full size.
Since it is only a secondary PC, hooked up to the stereo and tv, I usually just ssh into it and use VNC to control it from my main computer.
