Actually no, it wasn't done in Flash. Given the time it came out, Flash simply couldn't do that kind of stuff yet. It can *now*, but I'm pretty sure the CD was done in something else, maybe Director.

Actually, if you read up on Flash's capabilities to load data you will find that Flash can only load data from the 2nd level domain on which it lives. With the original version of the F4 plugin, this was not the case, but MM quickly recognized the problem and fixed it.

Yes. Yes, some of the non-standard capabilities of certain browsers implementations of JS are supported. Bundling. AS is a prototype-based language (rather than a class-based one) and these languages tend not really deal with data hiding since most are interpreted languages in the first place.

First of all a large majority of the people here talking about Flash really don't have any clue what they are talking about. I am currently working on a number of Flash 5 related books, and let me tell you, there is a HELL of a lot more to Flash than most people know... full OOP language, XML, socket connections... the list goes on.

This perl lib is nice and all, but its based on the same library that the basic PHP library is, and really isn't that big of a deal... it outputs Flash 3 files!

If you want cutting edge open source tech for Flash go check out Ming

Ming is a library for PHP, Python and Ruby that really kicks some serious ass!

As for Macromedia Generator, its still by far the leader in this area as it does more than output Flash... it also spits out JPG, GIF, QT, PNG, and Mac/PC exe's. It's more than a dynamic Flash solution, it is a dynamic graphics solution. Think PHP for images. It also has a very powerful plugin architecture based on Java.

Also, I run a mailing list for people who program inside of Flash 5: FlashCoders

  5. It is *bigger* than Flash on Inferno Plugin for IE - An OS In Your Browser · · Score: 1

The Flash 5 plugin is *way* smaller than 700K, its around 2-300K. The author was probably thinking about Shockwave, a *much* larger plugin used to play Director files on the web. Gotta love irrisponsible jouralism... misrepresenting products will get Slashdot in trouble sooner or later.

Wow... I'm sorry but you really scare me. There are a number of fair ways to count votes, and simply put, anything based on punching chads is *not* fair due to the fact that there is the possibilty for discrenpency. There has not been a fair count, and there probably never will be, I'm sad to say. When you get down to it *both* parties are full of lying dirty scum, and I really feel bad for anyone who doesn't see that. Anyone who is so far lost on either side really needs to remove their head from the rhetoric and think for themselves.

I've heard the argument that by challenging the election Gore is damaging the Constitution so many times its made me sick.

The simple fact of the matter is that our voting system simply can *not* handle close elections, and it took this mess to prove it.

When you get down to it, no one *KNOWS* who one. Bush "winning" tonight was just as arbitrary as how many corners a dangling chad needs. It was decided not to allow the recounted votes in, which does make sense since the rules were arbitrary and changed mid-process. However, the machine counts were just as bad, if not worse, that we know.

Throw into the pot that the amount of votes that Buchannan "got" in West Palm Beach was something like 8 standard deviations off what they should have been. If you know what anything about stat that should make you wonder at least a little about how bad the butterfly ballots are.

I'm not for either candidate, I just want a *fair* count, not an arbitrary choice to not count arbitrarily hand counted ballots in favor of arbitrarily machine counted ballots of which nearly 5% were thrown out because confused voters accidentally punched two holes.

I mean, doesn't that sound a little ridiculous to you?

  8. Wanna know *why* Adobe is going after MM? on Adobe Sues Over Tabbed Widgets · · Score: 1

The reason is simple. Flash 5. I was at the Flash Forward 2000 conference a few weeks back, where Macromedia annouced Flash 5. And it is a DAMN incredible product. Directly after MMs speech was Adobes... and it was... well, sad. They were *really* embarrassed... their Livemotion product, which they touted as a Flash "Killer" ended up being a horrible piece of junk that barely kept up with the features of Flash 3. It is all sour grapes.

I personally have never used it, but I know some poeple who have used the MS agent activeX control on certain web pages to add "Clippy" functionality to some IE-centric web applications. If this bug affects that as well, there could be some major implications.

Add that in with MSs voice generation and voice recognition controls and I can see a version of the ILOVEYOU virus that spreads its self by yelling to all of the other computers in the room!
