Why not use a radio transmitter in the tennis ball (or soccer ball or whatever) to record its exact position?
Instead of using a sensor in the ball, why not makes the lines sensitive? A touch-sensitive line could detect the impact of the ball.
No complaints about the ball behaving differently. The device wouldn't need to withstand the same force that a ball experiences when hit. Don't need to worry about a radio signal - the sensors could be physically connected back to a computer.
