Look up fascist in the dictionary. This "chap" is not a fascist. A fascist supports a strong government with little or no individual rights. He is a Libertarian, supporting individual rights with a minimal government. Get your facts straight before you label someone.

  2. Software and Patents Historically... on Is the POST Method Patented? · · Score: 1

It seems to me that the software industry has made huge leaps and bounds in the 30 or so years without patents. We've all heard the claims about where the auto industry would be if they progressed as fast as the computer industry. It's my belief that lack of patents stimulates innovation. If your competitor can copy your product in a matter of months, it keeps you looking for the next product.

      According to Lars
    • Understand one thing: this is not about a lot of money right now, because the money that's being lost right now is really pocket change, ok? It's about the priciple of the thing and it's about what could happen if this kind of thing is allowed to exist and run as rampant and out of control for the next 5 years as it has been for the last 6 months.
    • In response to the question "Have any of you (Metallica) ever copied a tape, record, 8-track, CD, etc. from a friend?"
Of course we have, ok? And of course it's a valid point. The bottom line is the size of it.

Principles are not principles if they are compromised when it is convenient to compromise them. A compromised principle is a compromised principle regardless of the scale.

Principles are principles. Piracy is piracy. Hypocrites are hypocrites.

Well, that's the rub, isn't it? I say that Napster does have a responsibility to not be a conduit for illegal activity. Especially when that is their not-so-hidden purpose.

I say that you're a fricking idiot that should be hung so you can't polute our gene pool anymore. Now that's my opinion, but opinion is not law or you'd be swinging right now.

*Sigh* once again, no one is talking about banner file transfers. The subject is requiring services that provide directories of files to take appropriate action so that their servers are not conduits for illegal activity. That's hardly an unreasonable request.

We are talking about precendence. You ban one, you pave the way to ban the rest.

I used to think you were just sticking to you point and not backing down. Now I agree that you are a troll.

  5. Re:I *hate* to insert reason into the argument... on House To Hold Hearing On Napster · · Score: 1

Napster exists for only one reason: To create an illegal market for copyrighted material

Is it really too hard for you to swallow your pride and admit that you are wrong? Many other /.'ers have posted legitimate use, not potential use, but actual legitimate use of Napster to spread their own band's music.

If anything, it would be a narrow ban restricting companies from aiding criminals who move around copyrighted material.

Perhaps you fail to realize that the precendence set by this "narrow ban" could very possibly, and in all probability, lead to the "not so narrow banning" of other technologies that someone as "narrow minded" as you deems to exist solely for the committing of a crime.

Someone will eventually ban something you care about?

  6. Napster Bug that shares other files... on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 1

Anyone who has used Napster and has a Metallica mp3 may be on the list.

There is a "bug" in the Windows Napster client which causes files outside of the specified in and out directories to be shared.

    I store my mp3's in:
    C:\archive\mp3\{genre}

    Napster is configured to use:
    C:\archive\mp3\2move
for the incoming and outgoing directories.

The problem is that Napster shares my entire c:\archive\mp3 tree. I know this because I regularily see people downloading mp3's outside of my c:\archive\mp3\2move directory.

I have 1 Metallica mp3. I own the CD the song is on and I haven't shared the song. However, because of a Napster bug, I may be in the lawsuit. My advice is to rename ANY Metallica mp3 you have whether you rightly own the CD or not.

  7. Add ISP's to the Big Brother List on AOL Liable For User Content In Germany? · · Score: 1

Rather than arguing whether AOL has the ability to monitor all files on their servicers, we should all be asking the quesion "Do we want our ISP to monitor all of our files?" We all Agree to a contract that says our ISP CAN monitor our files, but unless they have a specific reason to, most are not going to. I never put personal material or illegal material on my sites, so I'm not really worried about my ISP "finding" anything. However, if ISP's are being sued left and right by the RIAA, the MPAA or whoever, they will HAVE to start monitoring everyone. This could lead to higher ISP costs due the increased man-power, server-power, etc... In the end, the consumer suffers. Another chip of your freedom off the block. Laws are written and passed to protect the people. Laws which uphold the interests of large corporations at the expense of those people are doing more harm than good. Someone else posted: In general, people with a good case, don't lose. I say if the law is bad to begin with, we all lose!
