My phone was the only one I know personally to have had issues yesterday. My wife, her parents and my parents all had working cell phones through AT&T all day yesterday. From about noon until about 9 PM I could not make or recieve any calls or SMS after several reboots and a swapped SIM card from my local AT&T retailer. WTF? I understand how a data-center failure could cause widespread issues, but how does it only affect some people and not all from the area?
BS. They had an isolated outage delivering OPT-E-MAN access to one of my clients, and admitted it was a component failure that caused it. They were quick to move my client over to working temporary equipment until the part was replaced. At which time they made the cutover back to permanent equipment at midnight to reduce further downtime.
If you are talking about the wireless branch specifically, then yes they should have made the downtime more apparent. At least a notice on their website or something. But when my phone lost service yesterday (Only one I know personally that lost service, thought my SIM card was bust), I went down to an AT&T store to get a replacement. I was quickly informed that there is an outage because of network issues. Sounds like admission of a problem to me.
The change from Vista to 7 is more like 2000 to XP. There is very little being changed under the hood. For example (assuming version numbers still mean anything at MS) the kernel is going from 6.0 to 6.1. 2000 was kernel 5.0 and XP was 5.1. XP 64 and 2003 are kernel version 5.2.
All that aside, I'm trying to be optimistic that 7 will be what Vista promised to be.
You do know that Citrix is a Remote Desktop (Terminal Services) add-on that displays applications in their own window instead of an entire desktop? Applications run on the server, not on the iPhone. Unless the Citrix client itself is filled with holes, there is nothing that can infect the iPhone, just the Windows Server hosting Citrix and the application.
Thanks for clearing that up. As I said in my first rant, this NY State law is unconstitutional and I sincerely hope Amazon or some other big online retailer brings this through the US courts. Also, I feel the "usage tax" that many states have for out-of-state purchases is equally unconstitutional.
Just curious, if you run a shop through Amazon, are you sure they aren't charging the tax themselves and paying it to NY state?
Can't RTFA right now, but were they talking about the ARM Netbooks mentioned in the summary? If so, that might be missing Adobe Flash. I'd assume there is some sort of ARM port of Java. Plus, I haven't seen any web apps needing Silverlight aside from some MS-related sites.
Whoops, sorry, reread your posts and realized I'm the one that misunderstood what you were talking about. Do you have any "affiliates" of your business located in NY? If so, the NY State law requires you to collect taxes from your customers located in NY and pay the State. As to what relationship constitutes an "affiliate", you'd probably need to consult the law in more detail or check with a lawyer.
Why would you pay the NY State tax on online sales when you don't live in NY? I think you misunderstood. They are forcing Amazon and online retailers with any "referral or affiliate" presence in NY to charge the tax for shipments to residents of NY. They are doing this because no one claims the "use tax" on their tax forms for online orders. I believe this and any other state's "use tax" needs to be ruled unconstitutional and stopped. States aren't allowed to put a sales tax on goods purchased from another state. Changing the name to Use Tax doesn't change the fact that it is an illegal sales tax.
Last I checked, after bacteria formed, goo was still around. "Shift in population ratios" is referring to a change in the numbers between different variations within the same species:
white peppered moth: 30
black peppered moth: 70
-> some measure of time ->
white peppered moth: 60
black peppered moth: 40
Evolution!*
Besides, the origin of life is not what evolution attempts to explain. For all the theory is involved, it doesn't matter if life was created by aliens, deity/deities, or formed from crystalline structures forming latices for organic compounds. Evolution just shows that life changes over time.
Note: these ratios do not reflect any actual studies, this is just a made-up example to explain "shift in population ratios"
Had no idea Dune 2 and Battle Chess were in public domain, thanks!
As for Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, and The Dig, I'd recommend SCUMMVM instead of dosbox. SCUMMVM is a replacement engine for tons of older point-and-clicks that in nearly all cases plays the games better than the original engines. Its also supported on more hardware, including Dreamcast, PSP, DS and Wii.
I believe you are confusing cause and effect here. Evolutionary biology IS science. This is an oversimplification here, but it attempts to find the cause of WHY people exhibit these behaviors. Nobody can prove anything is "ok because it's natural", because that would be a moral judgment.
First: That is true, but I've since read the article and they are using Boot Camp and not elilo.
Second: See my correction following Atti K.'s response. I'm not sure what I was thinking, since the BIOS has only been used for boot and not OS Hardware operation since DOS. Even if the "emulation" of the BIOS introduces any latency, it would only be present until the BIOS hands off the boot process to the OS. So, my bad, I'll stop shooting my mouth off now.
It does if you are logged in and click the checkbox to Post Anonymously instead of signing out. Being signed out might still do it if they base it on IP or session info, but I can't say for sure.
Sorry, my brain fell 10 years behind when I wrote that. So the only point of latency would be boot times, which shouldn't affect the benchmarks. Plus, it looks like elilo is capable of booting linux directly from EFI, negating the need for Boot Camp. Although TFA says they used Boot Camp.
Wait a minute. Microsoft said they were entirely rebuilding Windows 7 from the ground-up, trying to get the kernal to run more-efficiently. That doesn't sound like mere window-dressing (like M.e. was merely Win98.2). That sounds like a complete overhaul.
Can't recall anyone saying that other than some bloggers and newssites mistaking MinWin(or was it WinMin?) to be the Windows 7 kernel. I do recall that being said about Longhorn before it was scrapped and then the Vista/2008 kernel became an incremental improvement to the 2003 kernel. Vista's actual kernel number is 6.0. "Windows 7" will have kernel version 6.1. Vista to Windows 7 is being touted as the same level of change as 2000 to XP.
IIRC, there isn't a normal BIOS on a Mac, and for Boot Camp one is emulated. Theoretically, this emulation could cause additional latency to the hardware access. How much of an effect this actually has is unknown. I am also unsure if Ubuntu on a Mac requires the Boot Camp BIOS.
Actually, DD-WRT should be able to do all of that. I have multiple separate wireless SSIDs on mine, with different encryption and access, and can setup several VLANs to separate things further if need be. I'm also running OpenVPN(server and client are both supported) on the router, not sure what the support is for MS PPTP VPN.
However, I'd bet your usage would be too intensive for the proc and ram on the consumer level devices and you'd likely have terrible latency. Kudos on the awesome setup you've got there, I'm just glad I don't have your electric bills.:P
Which I find pretty peculiar, honestly... calling an election based on what people feel like telling you on the way out of the booth.
Especially considering the possibility of something like the "Bradley Effect", where the theory is that hidden racist tendencies in whites will force them to not vote for a black guy while claiming they have. I'm not sure if this really exists, but its certainly a possibility that could skew the results. That and the myriad of other problems with polls. Gotta love America, where the media's desire to have quick results is more important than accuracy.
Disclaimer: I voted for Obama this year, but still think it was called a bit early.
Troll? I do believe the mods today haven't been reading bash.org.
Fantastic quote tree:
-9 volt batteries are hard to find!
--Pfft, try finding AAA's.
---AAA's are easy. Try finding AAAA's, although 9 volt batteries are made of them.

I believe most Burma Shave signs had a "A B C B" or "A A B A" rhyming scheme. Like such:
Big Mistake
Many Make
Rely On Horn
Instead of Brake
Burma Shave

Didja know that Slashdot moderators consist of multiple people? Not just one person with multiple personalities or an inability to make a decision.
Even God cannot withstand a Slashdotting.
Probably meant to say Aleve.

Used to, but they dropped official support for it a while back. Not sure if they are bringing back support with the PS3 version though.
