i've delt with companies in the past that used a sub-domain category naming scheme. It sounds REALLY dumb at first but it makes sense and is easy to remember in the long term..
example:
oracle01.hstntx1.us.mycompany.biz
an Oracle server in houston (location 1) in the us.. not that hard to figure out what it is.
When i'm a development manager for a huge spiffy company, my employees will have a choice: Perl or Intercal Take your pick.
