"I should...why? Pulseaudio works great here - no problems at all, no high CPU usage, nothing."
No one suggests that you should tamper with what works. If you're happy with Pulse, fine.
"It's clear to anyone that has looked into this that most people are very happy with Pulseaudio."
No, most people settle for Pulse, because they believe it to be the best thing available. Since "most people" don't have any idea what Linux is, let alone Pulse, then "most people" can't be very happy with Pulse. But, to be fair, I should assume you mean "most people in the Linux community". Again, I have to say "No." If most people WERE happy with Pulse, there wouldn't be a zillion posts on the various support sites asking for help to get sound figured out.
"Each time Linux redesigns some subsystem there are problems, and we see the same people bitching about how we should use $ALTERNATIVE instead and how Linux is not ready for the desktop."
Switching sound systems doesn't require a redesign of Linux at all. I'm using the very same kernel with OSS4 that I used with Alsa/Pulse.
And, finally, Linux IS ready for the desktop. It's PEOPLE who are not ready for the desktop. Everyone who says that Linux isn't ready for the desktop should get a clue - millions of people with an IQ over 90 are already using Linux on the desktop. Those other millions with IQ's of less than 90 will never be ready for the desktop - so Microsoft is there to hold their hands, and make them feel good.
The "point" is, we seem to have two solutions to the same problem. USB is relatively cheap and reliable, Bluetooth is relatively expensive. Why would I buy a bluetooth headset, when USB works so well? Why do I have to solve the same problem multiple times? I'm fairly sure that my USB headset is of superior quality to some bluetooth - or at least, I've not SEEN any bluetooth that is as large and comfortable as my USB, or delivers the quality of sound.
In short, if the problem is solved, why bother looking for another solution?
That is interesting. If I find some time (before I forget about this thread) I may do some experimenting. Mostly though, I don't need or want sound, so I have a set of USB headphones lying on top of the tower. I only grab them when I want to listen to something. But, this does look interesting enough to play with. I'll have to steal my speaker system back from the kids if I do play with it.;^)
I'm afraid you haven't yet distinguished between OSS3 and OSS4. Have you TRIED IT? If not - stop your belly aching. If you have tried it, then put some comments on the OSS4 contributor's site. Since I'm not a developer, telling me how bad it is accomplishes nothing.
Once again, OSS4 solves all of my problems. Sound just works for me, without a hitch.
OSS3 was proprietary, it had limitations, and it sucked.
In today's world, OSS4 is open source, it is actively being developed, and it WORKS! See my post above. I can have three virtual machines open, all of them playing sound, and go back to the host machine, and play music there. No sizzle, no popping, no waiting for buffers.
OSS4. I don't understand why more people haven't discovered it yet. If the idea of compiling scares you, don't mess with it - but I really thought the majority of Linux systems could figure it out.
I'll stick my neck out here. First, Pulse relies on the Alsa driver. There is no hardware issue, and the driver issue seems to be the Alsa driver. OSS4 works on my hardware, where Pulse and Alsa failed. And, of course, the Windows sound drivers work on that same hardware.
People with sound issues on Alsa and Pulse should try OSS4.
You should be using OSS4. I put up with the Pulse idiosyncracies until my virtual machines spazzed out. Started researching my options, and found that Open Sound was moving past the deprecated OSS3, which wasn't much better than Pulse.
Since I've compiled and installed Open Sound, I have no more sound problems, period. Everything works the way it's supposed to.
If Pulse and Alsa get their shit together, fine. If not, I'm a devoted OSS fan. Before anyone runs off to experiment, be warned - you will probably have to spend a few minutes purging Alsa from your system. There is no co-existence of the two, at least not on Ubuntu. If you're not a Linux guru, plan on following a how-to, and plan on spending a couple hours getting it right.
He spent more time having the employers teaching him what the job was, than doing the job. See the picture? Who is going to hand a man a 30 inch chain saw, before that man demonstrates that he can HANDLE IT. That's not your silly Weedeater Poulan toy from Walmart. Major waste of time and resources.
Well - I didn't think I'd get under anyone's skin with Slovak. I drink with my Polish, Ukrainian, Czech, and other friends at the local "Slovak" club. We aren't especially particular about precise spellings and names. Most of us have Anglicized names, and can't even speak the old language. Oh well I actually meant "Slavik", thanks for that anyway.
The fuckwad theory inaccurately assumes that we begin with "normal" people. I had decades of people watching behind me before the internet came along. Those "normal" people were ranting about their pet peeves way back in 19?? - before that, even. The only difference was, they couldn't be heard as far away as they are heard today. Smaller soapbox, smaller audience. But, they were just as "abnormal".
If anything, the fact that those fuckwads are on the internet is a good thing. They run at the mouth here, instead of rounding up their favorite minority victims to dump on with a lynching, or whatever. Their public ranting should also have the benefit of showing more "normal" people just how retarded their neighbors might be. All of those whackjobs come from somewhere. Do you know how many of them live within a mile of your house? You might be surprised - it pays to listen. The next time some lunkhead starts with his racial jokes, or whatever, just answer with some noncommital "hmmm" and "uh-huh". Give him some rope, let him really get going. You could uncover a freaking serial killer who has been stalking the subhumans for years. Or, a child molester, or a serial rapist, or ANYTHING!
If only.01% of the human population is a true fucktard, you can be sure that one of them lives near you.
Not posting AC 'cause I don't give a damn if you find me.
But, anytime I take a notion, I can post to this or any other site, and the site owner WILL NOT track me, unless he's expecting me, and coordinating with some damn good man in the middle people. Stealthnet works fine, TOR works pretty good, and there are plenty of other ways of drilling out to use proxies. If YOU can't fool slashdot, that's fine. It doesn't mean that no one else can.
Kaspersky. See the name? He's a Slovak - I would say Polish, but Slovak for sure. He lives in Russia. He's no young puppy. The man grew up under the old Soviet. His values are not the values of the western world. I don't mean to be judgemental, per se, but I recognize that he ain't like me.
While most of us in the western world tend to deny it, there is comfort to be had inside of a totalitarian regime. You know your place, you know everyone else's place, you do your job and keep your nose to yourself, and everyone gets along. It's easy to sell to the masses, and Joe Sixpack manages alright unless and until some silly sumbitch decides to sacrifice Joe for the "good of the party".
So, Mr. Kaspersky has a touch of nostalgia for the good things from the Soviet, and forgets about the bad things. People tend to do that. Right here in the US, we have all kinds of people who remember the '50's (or whichever decade they were teenagers in) as Utopia. Life was simpler then - mostly because they were kids with no responsibilities.
For that matter, I can probably find a few million people right here in the US why would fall right in line with Mr. Kaspersky's ideas, because it just makes sense. No one needs to be anonymous, unless they are up to no good. Hell, with my own relatively open mind, I think kids are goofy for wearing hoodies. Why cover your face, and try to hide your features, if you're not ashamed of what you are doing? But, I don't make a big deal of the hoodies, because I know the cops aren't always right, or even always honest.
Yeah, I could easily find several million people in the US who will agree with Mr. Kasperski. Some kind of a psychological analysis would be nice to look at. Or, the conclusions drawn by the psych people, anyway.
Is that you George? How much more do your neocon masters want us to deregulate? We've already dismantled almost all the laws that were put in place after the crash of '29! There really isn't much more we can do!!
Well, wait - we CAN allow people to trade entirely on credit, with no collateral at all. Would that make you happy, Mr. Bush?
Why do parks? There are millions of images of the more famous parks, tens of thousands of less famous parks - and the rest, everyone who cares about them, already have images.
How about driving it to places in the news - current events places. Phillip Garrido's home would be high on my list. Open the gates, and scope it all out. Drive around the block, through the neighbor's back yards, get everything.
I can come up with more - anyone who can't simply doesn't read the news. Screw those parks.
I'm stealing your bits and bytes, and I just don't give a damn what you or anyone else thinks about it. If you go hungry because I've stolen a few bits, tough shit, dude. Go ahead, weigh your computer, and see how much it's weight has been reduced. I STOLE WHAT'S MISSING!!! And, you know what? I FEEL GOOD, LIKE I KNEW THAT I WOULD! Now, you'll miss a meal, and so will all of your loved ones.
When I figure out how to do it, I'm gonna steal the electrons from your machine too. There's no point in me paying for electricity, when I can get you to pay for it!
Uhh, I suspect that it probably did little if any good. You should have helped them get I2P, TOR, Stealthnet, or to set up some VPN tunnels or something. Some avatar on a random page outside of Iran was unlikely to be seen by an Iranian, much less do anything for him.
My thoughts too. What has Microsoft ever done "right", other than seperating suckers from their money? Oh - wait - this means Microsoft is in charge of marketing?
So, which of the big words did you have difficulty with? Maybe I can help you. You'll remember that Uncle (half brother, really) Rastius told you to stay in school. You should have taken his advice!
Well, let me think a second. Every nation one earth seems to regulate the intartubez, when you think about it. China has their great (fire)wall - Iran had little difficulty deciding to pinch some tubes during their election protests, Australia has some hare brained censorship planes, as do Canada, France, Germany - need I go on?
Assuming that the United States is going to be on that bandwagon along with every other nation on earth, I'd much rather see the FCC regulating the intartubez than just about anyone else. As for the "Bush appointees" - I wasn't aware that FCC employees were appointed by anyone, much less Bush. For the most part, the FCC seems to actually have a clue, unlike congress, or the courts, or most other agencies of the US government.
Uhhhmmm - I simply don't understand what you're asking. Are you European, maybe, and 1/4 means something different to you, than it does to me? To me, 1/4 million means a quarter of a million, or 250,000. The only way I can make sense of your post, is to read 1/4 as "Somewhere between 1 and 4" Please read it as a fraction, or a decimal. 1/4 =.25

Hang up and drive? Get a cellphone with USB? I don't know - that's your problem. Bluetooth has no place in my house.
What does your 386 have to do with the discussion? You're just feeling argumentative, and you feel the need to put down OSS4 - which works?
So, what you're saying is, OSS4 doesn't work? I sure hope you don't tell my computers that - they seem to think that it DOES WORK.
Seriously - try it, you'll like it.
Oh - bluetooth? Don't own it, can't see the point in it. USB seems to do everything that bluetooth claims to do.
