I know, you meant to be funny. But, I have to point out that the US military and the US intelligence community advised the White House that Iraq did NOT pose a threat to the United States. The Pentagon didn't ask to go to Iraq to search for nukes and crap, they were ORDERED to by the Commander in Chief. Let's badmouth that man, the blame is his, and his administration's.
Personally, I do get a little tired of the rather pointless prattle. Let me do the obligatory auto analogy.
I have driven Peterbilts, Kenworths, Freightliners, GMC trucks, Whites, - you name it, if it was built in the United States, I probably drove it. Off road equipment, I've driven Case, Caterpillar, Kubota, - I could go on.
Never did I wish that more commuters were driving a Peterbilt like me. Good GOD, commuters are dangerous enough with their little 4 wheelers!! Imagine Soccer Mom careening down the highway in an 80,000 pound rig!!
Operating systems? Average Joe is incapable of keeping an operating system going when the OS does everything for him. Why do we wish that he would adopt a system that doesn't do ANYTHING until he explicitly TELLS IT TO DO SOMETHING?!?! Do we need 500 million bumbling idiots all asking us for help and guidance because they can't play a movie?
Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to tutor a couple people, now, and a couple more in a few months. But, if Windows were to die overnight, tomorrow I would be literally SWAMPED with requests from people wanting to install Ubuntu, BSD, Suse - you name it. And, I would be totally LOST, trying to help dozens of people track down the obscure driver, or decide if a hardware change would be better, which media player better suits their needs - and the idiots would never just finally figure it out, and go their way. I mean, they STILL haven't figured out WINDOWS!!
When I look at my computers, I see specialized machines, designed and built for MY purposes, and customized to perform the tasks that I choose to perform. These same machines are probably unsuitable for more than 75% of other *nix users, let alone that vast uncaring audience of Windows users.
I dunno about all of you, but I CERTAINLY DO NOT want to see the masses given keys to shiny new Caterpillar D9's. Why are we so fired up about giving them the keys to powerful computer systems that they don't understand any better than they understand a bulldozer?
I say, piss on the masses. Let them eat MS crap.
All that said - I'll never really understand why businesses and corporations are still sucking up to the monopolistic Microsoft teat. You would think that the accountants would figure out that upgrading to *nix might be short term expensive, but long term priceless. I guess a lot of idiots manage to become accountants, just like any other profession.
Sorry, but I have to call "BULLSHIT" on your ten commandments thing.
From the earliest freaking CAVEMEN, people copied other people. If not, only one family would ever have tamed fire, and if/when they died off, fire would have been lost.
Don't copy? Do you use wheels? Do you pay some sort of royalty to the first bozo who discovered that two round slabs with an axle can carry a heavy load easily?
Thou shalt not copy? The ten commandments DEMAND that you copy the conduct of the priests and the prophets.
Don't copy? Every single book, every thesis ever written copies ideas that have previously been published. I DARE you to find a single doctor of any discipline whose thesis COPIED NOTHING from those who preceded him in the discipline. You can't do it.
The sum of human knowledge would be quite a small, dismal heap of dung, if we failed to copy. Every automobile, every motorcycle, every airplane in use today copies copious amounts of previous experience.
Copyright was NEVER MEANT TO PREVENT COPYING!! Copyright law is ONLY MEANT to prevent other people from MAKING MONEY from your ideas, for a set period of time.
Being an author doesn't make you a demigod. You're still just another dumb jackass who had BETTER continue working, and producing yet more valuable stuff that people want - or you go hungry. Don't presume to tell us that you deserve to live on easy street for the rest of your life, just because you gave us a stupid song, or acted in a movie, or wrote an innovative software, or a new moronic game.
You sold a great game, that appeals to slashdotters who live in their Mama's basements? Great. Shut up, and get back to work. Get cracking on the next one. Slashdotters have short attention spans anyway, the faster you write code, the longer they stay amused, the better you can eat.
This law has been in place for decades. It has been used infrequently against serious abusers of CB and ham radio. There are sorry souls who have no life, manage to scrape together a few dollars to buy an overpowered radio, then purchase an illegal amp so that they can go on air. Some of these people have NO GOAL OTHER THAN to be annoying, and to interfere with legitimate radio communications. Legal power for a CB radio is 4 watts. The obnoxious SOB boosts it to as much as 4000 watts, and sometimes bleeds across multiple bandwidths (as opposed to merely bleeding across multiple channels) disrupting anyone and everyone using the airwaves. People have actually died because a legal CB was incapable of summoning help to an accident. Historically, the FCC does NOT move on these people until they are just overwhelmed with complaints, then they take their sweet time verfying the infractions, collecting evidence, and finally breaking in, confiscating the equipment, and issuing a summons.
The FCC has historically been so severely undermanned that they simply cannot investigate every flagrant violation.
I don't expect that the FCC has suddenly found the manpower to drive around with a wardriving kit, so that they can monitor WIFI setups. They have much more serious concerns to spend their limited manpower on.
Desktop environments - especially WINDOWS desktop environments - will not allow two people to log onto the same hardware at the same time.
Oddly enough, most Linux distros come with an X-server installed. Just create an account for her, she can log in, then direct the video output to her own netbook, or to a second monitor, or whatever.
To do anything similar on Windows, you MUST install a Windows Server, whether it be Win2K, Win2003, or Win2008. You CANNOT log multiple people on at the same time with Win9x, ME, XP, or Vista or Win7. Microsoft won't allow it, you ain't doing it without some SERIOUS hacking.
Actually, no. I could make excuses, I could cite statistics, I could cite the UCMJ, or I could even make things up.
I'll just go with personal experience. In 8 years of service, 5 of those years sea duty, I was only remotely concerned with one single rape. No other rapes ever came to my attention. That single instance couldn't have resulted in any offspring, as it was a homosexual rape, driven by a violent temper and racial hatred more than any need/want for sex. The perpetrator spent some years at Leavenworth, the victim spent some months in therapy, and life went on.
As for nonviolent, extracurricular activities of a sexual nature - you have a point. We spread our DNA around the globe......
Your assumption that the best would choose to evade the draft, and duties related to it, is noted. I make no such assumption - in fact, I judge the "duty bound" to be the superior creature.
And, the inbred waste of oxygen with a rich dad just helps to make my case. HE stayed home to breed, while his betters died on the battlefields.
I happen to trust Google - today. Google apps are cool - today. But, I limit my use of Google apps, because WHO KNOWS what might happen TOMORROW?!?! A hostile takeover bid from somewhere or other, with an entirely new philosophy about petty little things like "ownership", "copyright", etc. In short, what is located on Google's servers ultimately belongs to Google, and I can't influence how they use it.
The concept of the cloud is alright, but people tend to get carried away with the concept. Hell, I don't even trust MY OWN machine to keep my most personal data, why should I trust anyone else's? One virus, trojan, or worm is all it takes to expose my personal data on MY machine. On THEIR machine, all it takes is one person to decide he doesn't like me, my outlook on life, my race, my religion, my nationality - or he might even be so impersonal that he doesn't care one whit about me, I'm just a set of data that he can make a profit from.
Let the fools store everything on the net. Like the guy above, I'll keep my stuff in my head, mostly, and on my own hardware when I can't keep it all in my head.
No, I've only attempted to make a case for those killed, who were part of "America's best", not the 2.1 million who were drafted.
But, while you attempt to explain that this only affected a very small age group - I'll point out that the draft was in effect from about 1915 until the end of the Vietnam war, encompassing WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. That includes about 3 generations, not a small part of a single generation.
The Sole Survivor is something I'm passingly familiar with, and it doesn't really apply to this concept. A family with superior genes might have had 3 or 4 children eligible for the draft, and lost 3 before the 4th was declared ineligible. Going with that 2.5 offspring per individual, that family probably would have contributed 10 grandchildren with superior genes, but instead only contributed 2.5 to the gene pool. Meanwhile, another family with inferior genes, and 3 or 4 children, were allowed to contribute THEIR 10 grandchildren to the breeding pool........
You don't see a kind of ripple effect?
Sacrificing even a very small percentage of the "best", while allowing the "worst" to breed uncontrolled will have a cumulative effect over time.
I know - you'll challenge me to prove it. Heh. You're asking for tens of thousands of hours of research. I'm not sure I have tens of thousands of hours of life left.....
It doesn't take a study. Just do the math, on say, Vietnam. 50,000 US soldiers killed, I believe? That's 50,000 of America's best. Assuming 2.5 offspring per soldier, that is 125,000 people who MIGHT HAVE inherited the genes of those best and brightest. Yeah, you can run statistics, and tell us that these numbers are negligible. But, statistics don't allow for an Einstein, a Tesla, or even some lesser being such as an Alexander Graham Bell, or George Washington Carver.
Keep in mind, I didn't say that those 50,000 dead were necessarily a major impact on the gene pool - I challenge anyone to say that it had ZERO impact. All those fine genes wasted, while the idiots and other undesirables were allowed to breed.
Doesn't that make you wonder about all the developmental problems children exhibit today? In it's lifetime, (75 years? 80 years?) I say the draft had a detrimental impact on our gene pool.
400 years is plenty of time for selective breeding to make a big difference in the gene pool. Selective breeding leads to new breeds of dogs, cats, horses, cattle and more in much less than 400 years.
Here, in the US, I consider the draft to have been a form of selective breeding. The services excluded people with flat feet, idiots, insane, weak, etc from duty. The strongest, healthiest, smartest, and most stable were sent into battle, and very often killed, while the undesirables stayed home to breed.
How many people think that this had zero impact on the gene pool?
Rural American here. I have a septic tank. Everything we excrete as waste goes into a tank, where bacteria break it down into nutrients again. The overflow goes right back into the ground, percolates through a gravel bed, and the trees and grass take it up. It's eventually evaporated into the atmosphere, from where it falls again as rain.
Hey, cool, I've probably pissed on EVERY CITY IN THE WORLD (indirectly)!!!
Yes, what he said. Life, in it's various forms, has consumed and recycled every drop of water on this earth a myriad of times. It isn't necessary for water to evaporate into the atmosphere and fall again as rain to be "purified".
People like you deserve DRM. Really, you do. You put your faith in the corporation, you deserve to be raped by the corporation. Some of us prefer more normal, consensual relations. I'm not putting you down, of course. This IS a free country. If you truly enjoy being boned with a huge wood rasp and no lubricant, go for it.
You watched these pigs, where? On a farm? Someone gave them the garbage, because they were to cheap to buy feed. In the wild? Wild pigs are VERY unlikely to be found around a landfill, dumpsters, or even most illegal dumps. Pigs are smart - smarter than a lot of people. They are going to eat good food, whenever possible.
Put a man in a cage, and let him get hungry, then give him garbage. He'll probably eat too. He won't be happy, but he'll eat.
It is a common misconception that pigs choose to be dirty, and that they will eat garbage. Only animals that are subject to animal cruelty and neglect are like that. Give a pig room, and he will never soil his eating and sleeping area. Put the same pig into a cage with only room to lie down, and he will be nasty in just hours.
What, precisely, constitutes a bigger problem than exploitation? Granted, there may be more important cases of exploitation than RIAA suing defenseless people. Sometimes, you have to just pick your fights, because you can't fight all the battles. Apparently, this guy thinks he has an angle on this particular fight, so he's going to try to make a difference. There isn't much point in him going after, say, pirates in Somalia, after all. Or maybe the rapists and killers in other parts of Africa. He can't win those fights, no matter how noble the cause might be.
Age and experience has it's place. Generally, I will opt for that experienced older guy. But, here we are dealing with technologies that a lot of older people didn't grow up with. We are dealing with cultural values that didn't exist when some of the older people were growing up. Assuming this young guy to be tech savvy, he may be the best thing to happen to Jammie. I wonder why, exactly, he is taking the case. Maybe he is about to start a crusade against the oppressive laws being brought into existence by RIAA and freinds? I like the idea, and I hope if that is true, he can find a few dozen freinds like him.
Basically, every inbred fool with a few million dollars worth of "Intellectual Property" is allowed input in this treaty, but the common man, and human rights activists seeing the same treaty would be bad for national security. Yes, all the inbreds are sleeping with each other.
Key word: hobby. It's cool for people to spend their leisure time burning fuel. I guess it's no better or worse than NASCAR, MotoX, and all the *cough* "extreme motor sports" *cough* that gets broadcast on television.
Hobby.
We face an energy crisis, as well as an environmental crisis, and people justify burning oil for FUN.
Hemp also competed with plastics, cotton, and pharmaceuticals. There were a lot of big guns brought to bear on hemp. Few people realize that farmers were REQUIRED to produce hemp up until about 1942 or so. The government paid them to do so, because hemp was the standard in sail and rope making. Today, nylon has replaced that standard.
"I suspect it also has some vulnerabilities but gets less attention from the bad guys because Acrobat's Reader is much mode widely used."
Precisely. Using the most popular, and being part of the crowd, marks you as prey for the predators.
I use Foxit and Sumatra. Haven't installed Adobe PDF products in years - literally. I would stop using Flash, but often times I'm just to lazy to download a version for VLC. Besides which, some sites seem to block access by any means other than Adobe Flash.
