Heh. You hit a sore spot with the education system. My eldest son is a "computer science" student at SAU. He learns the microsoft way of doing things, and not much, at that. My youngest son has been partially converted to Linux. He is competent in - everything, I think. Let's just say he has left me behind, long ago. He STILL USES WINDOWS - but the difference between him, and his older brother is, he DOES NOT get eaten up with virii, trojans, etc. He understands what a security model is. And, he makes it work for him. Net result? I can hack the elder son's machine at will. I have not yet broken into the younger son's machine. IN FACT - HE GOT INTO MY MACHINE! Something the elder son has never been able to do! So - where does all that Microsoft-centric education get the elder son? It might get him a flunkie's job when he graduates from college. It certainly isn't going to make him a systems administrator anywhere that counts. The younger son will beat him out for such a job, for a number of reasons.
Fanboy? Empiric evidence says that the Linux guru is "smarter", whether he is more "intelligent" or not.
One only needs to add up the numbers. How many billions of dollars have been spent to "cure" Windows exploits, and how many have been spent to "cure" Linux exploits. In this world where money talks, and bullshit walks, you would think people would have caught on by now.
I'll spell it out then. If I have billions to spend on politics, then I can buy and sell your rights. I can change laws to make it easy for me to exercise "eminent domain", taking your home for pennies on the dollar, IF I choose to give you anything at all. I can have the voting laws changed subtly to prevent you and anyone who agrees with you from voting. If you have zero dollars to spend, you can do absolutely nothing about it. It is possible for a politician with a high price to cause more damage than a politician with a low price. Buying a dozen key politicians who are regarded as "honest" will have far more impact than buying up hundreds of known dishonest politicians.
THAT depends entirely upon your definition of "mischief". In the case of all the copyright laws, if your definition means "avoiding government and corporate interference and monitoring of a free citizen's ability to exchange data and ideas", then a million dollars can do a lot of mischief. If, on the other hand, your definition means "anything that could potentially endanger the monopolies held by the RIAA, MPIAA, and associated organizations and corporations" then you are right. A million dollar bribe is unlikely to cause any mischief at all.
I never count my spam. I've gotten a huge increase in spam, recently. At least 6 pieces since January 1st, maybe 10 pieces. I dunno if I carelessly filled in the wrong form somewhere, or what, but man, it's killing me.;) Like yourself, I just marked them as spam on my gmail account, and I haven't seen any of them again.:-)
Yes, I've some experience with diesels. Large and small. And, I didn't say that diesels are exactly "quiet". I did point out that diesels are no longer the noisy hammering monsters that they were in past years. Diesels with turbines are amazingly quiet, in fact. While I have never measured the noise levels with an instrument, I'm not certain that a diesel really is a lot noisier than an oil fired boiler. I HAVE stood in the boiler rooms of a ship that produced 50,000 shaft horse power. Those power plants are certainly not quiet either.
Agreed - reliance on technology isn't always a good thing. An Adams class destroyer has a powerful, commanding presence, no matter where it goes, even in today's world - DESPITE the fact that they are a half century old. Those 5 inch 54 caliber guns can hit anything they can see, not to mention they can hit almost anything a radar tech can track. There aren't many targets that will survive a single hit from those old 5 inch guns... You could probably build a half dozen Adam's class for the price of a single "moderrn" destroyer.
is related to current performance. A ship's character is determined early in it's career. I served aboard an outstanding destroyer, and I served aboard a garbage scow of a frigate. Everything was different - it was almost like two different navies. One example: In two and a half years aboard the destroyer, we went dead in the water ONE TIME, and the snipes had power back up in about 15 minutes. THEN, heads rolled. In two and a half years aboard the frigate, we went dead in the water routinely, sometimes for as long as an hour. No heads ever rolled. This may be due in part that the destroyer regarded itself as a combat unit, while the frigate seemed to regard itself as a support unit. I lived through it, and I can't explain it.
I hope you don't subscribe to the doctrine that boomers can't be tracked. USS Richard E. Byrd tracked them, and found kill solutions. Maybe the REST of the world can't track a boomer, but they CAN be tracked.;)
A Chief Petty Officer aboard any destroyer will NOT spill one drop of his coffee, even when the ship executes a 360 degree roll. If he did, he would be banished to a carrier.
And, from where did you get those 100,000 HP diesels? From the ship's official homepage: "Power plant: Four Colt-Pielstick diesel engines, two shafts, 40,000 Hp" You should be aware that modern diesels aren't the great hammering monsters of the 1950's. They are designed, engineered, and built to high standards, one of those standards being the ability to sneak around and evade those very same submarines which are the subject of your post. And, you can bet that in the relatively shallow, relatively crowded waters they were operating in, the diesels were powered way down, and the screws turning pretty slowly.
Maybe that is why I wasn't a bubble head. Both ends of the boat are ROUND! How the hell can I tell which way it is pointed? I stuck with destroyers. Up there, on the surface, there really is a pointy end, and there is a square end. (Well, sometimes, the square end is sort of rounded, but you get the idea.) Of course, the REAL reason I stayed on the surface, is that Destroyermen are in demand everywhere you go. There isn't a woman in the world who doesn't dream of having her own Destroyerman!
Recycling FUD. Maybe. Then again, maybe you are another MS Fanboi? I test drove Vista. Performance sucked. Maybe it didn't take 15 minutes to boot, but it certainly took three times as long as XP - no bullshit, no exxageration. In the time it took Vista to boot, I could have booted Ubuntu, started a virtual machine, and booted WinXP. Or, started Ubuntu, and booted Win7 inside the same VM. 15 minutes? I don't know for certain, but it seems the guy was exagerating, slightly.
Actually - I've test driven Win7. It really is a pretty good OS. It takes the better features of Vista, and adds them to XP, IMHO. (Yes, Vista actually had a couple decent improvements, hidden among the bogus marketing bullshit) I can't really imagine that Win7 is going to run real great on a netbook (I don't have one to test with) but on a desktop with more than a gig of memory, it is a pretty solid system. Some tweaking may be necessary to suit the individual's needs, but I was a serious XP tweaker years ago!
I see that a Microsoft Fanboi has mod powers - if I still had mod points, I'd have given you a +1 insightful. It's a terrible shame that/. doesn't have more variation in moderation. It's even a worse shame that some people abuse their powers....;)
IMO, Visa and MC SHOULD have "had to do it". They move money around the world, 24/7, in amounts that are astronomical, as well as minute. There is almost no one who understands the flow of money better than Visa and MC. They cannot be totally ignorant of the illegality and the immorality of some of their customers. Sure, they may be ignorant for awhile, but after a few dozen complaints from customers, they become aware. (Yeah, I read, and I understand, MOST customers fail to report these crimes, for fear of embarrasment - but SOME report them) Visa, MC, and any other corporation that moves large sums of money on a daily basis has to bear some responsiblity, if only the responsibility of reporting the crimes, then awaiting orders from law enforcement.
Err - uhhh - hmmmm. I'm looking hard to see where I said Linux is the only option. Looking real hard. Maybe you could point that part of my post out to me?
In the real world, of which you speak, people die due to stupid mistakes. So, I agree with you, that people deserve to be owned for being so damned stupid. They are just lucky that their computer can't be programmed to bite their empty fucking heads off. No one is going to die, due to a computer exploit.
Errrr, wait a minute. HOSPITALS DON'T USE MICROSOFT PRODUCTS, DO THEY?!?!?! Oh, shit......
Oh yeah - one more thing. DO NOT presume to tell me just how naive I may or may not be. If/when you finish making the rounds to tell Microsoft customers just how stupid they are, I'll reconsider your presumption.
I have an alternative solution.
Migrate to Linux. Or Mac. Or, Solaris. Or Win3.11.
Seriously - everyone knows that 99.999999% of viruses and other infestations are targeted at Windows operating systems. Why stay with Windows?
People with A: an IQ larger than their shoe size B: a budget smaller than the federal government and C: are literate should have migrated long ago.
Duhhh. People don't speak like a textbook. I often use such words as "oughta", as in "oughta be tarred and feathered". It isn't ignorance, nor is it carelessness - I type it that way intentionally, because people all over America TALK THAT WAY. Ain't you glad that it's so? (Don't bother telling me that "Ain't ain't a word", I've heard it enough times, and it IS A WORD, commonly used by uneducated and educated people alike.)
Uhhhh - you might have taken the time to learn how to USE THE HOSTS FILE, before running at the mouth. In your examples, a single entry would have taken care of both - www.example.com.
Further, there are a number of programs available to help the ignorant to manipulate their hosts file. Hostess may (or may not) be the best.
Yes, the hosts file is effective. No, the hosts file is not exceedingly difficult. Yes, I recommend using the hosts file - at least for the nastiest stuff.
Throwing IE8 into the comparison may or may not be unfair. I won't argue that. But, calling Firefox garbage is most definitely unfair. I mean, HOLY SHIT MAN!! Just how long has Internet Explorer had something so simple as tabbed browsing, now? Face it, IE had to reverse engineer the best parts of FF to come up with something new. Chrome? It's entirely new, build on totally different engine. I like Chrome, but, hey, comparing it to Firefox is a bit like comparing a motorcycle to a car. An air-cooled two cylinder isn't ANYTHING like a water cooled 4 or 6 cylinder - how can you compare them?
Firefox has been a great browser, and it has shown the world how a browser should look. If Chrome really is a better browser (time will tell) we should remember that Chrome stands on Firefox's shoulders. As well as Safari's shoulders.;)
Alright, I have to ask: "Long before the United States" means, what, 5 years? 10 years? Whatever the answer to that might be, I must point out that here in southwest Arkansas, Dialup only became availbe about 1999, and DSL only became available in early 2008. It isn't a lack of technology that caused this - the universities and community colleges are working with fiber NOW. My son who attends SAU downloads full length movies in minutes, while it takes up to a week for me to do the same. The problem is with the companies, who find it to be highly lucrative to develop a market in Dallas, or Little Rock, but neglect the backwaters. Government SHOULD guide development, but it doesn't. Oh, same goes for cell phone service. I owned a cell phone as long as 10 years ago, but couldn't use it from my home county - no coverage. Good grief!
OK, why don't you take a dare. Put a cell phone into your pants pocket. Yes, nestle it deep into that pocket, and hitch it around, so that the antenna is resting against your nice, warm scrotum. Keep it there for the next 20 years. Keep it fully charged, and turned on. Yes, plug in your "hands free" ear bud and speaker, so that you have no need to remove that cell phone from it's dark, warm resting place. There is NO CHANCE that you might develop testicular cancer as a result, right?
Heh. You hit a sore spot with the education system. My eldest son is a "computer science" student at SAU. He learns the microsoft way of doing things, and not much, at that. SF is so - so - uhhh - SIXTIES!! That's it, SIXTIES! I often visited the SF section of the library way back in the late sixties and early seventies.
