  2. Suggestions of improvement in copyright laws on Appeals Court Rejects Copyright Extension Challenge · · Score: 1

It seems that governments are using taxpayers money to enforced IP laws which I think is stupid. In most cases, intellectual properties are low in cost and high in end value that is why corporations are lobbying for laws to protect it. While IP laws has been to promotes innovations, it is now used to retard innovations. Patents especially has been perverse to a great extend that it is not worthwhile coming up with something new when it is building on former innovations or just because it might inflict some nonsensical patents (which are sadly to many to mention.) Also, a company with vast IP might not be so motivated to innovate. Similarly, if a person is able to vast amount of money from his IP, would he still be motivated to "create" more IP.
The questions that governments NEVER answers are why are the governments helping corporations to protect IP unreasonably. furthermore, IP is generally tax free unlike othr taxes. While I am in agreement that IP should be protected, there must be new ways of implementing IP laws.
Below is a suggestion of how copyright laws can be improve:
    (1) In our current society, the pace of change is so fast that the protection of IP under the current copyright laws are absurbed. For example, no one is going to use Windows 3.1 5 years later. Or most of 10 bestsellers (books) would be forgotten in 10 years time. What is the purpose of copyright laws then? And are government going to spend taxpayers money to protect "obsolete IP"? The best solution in this case would be copyrightable material would be protected under the copyright law under a shorter period of time. This time frame would be dependent on what media/works the IP is on. For example, the copyright of a book can be 5 years. While the copyright of a computer software might be 3 years. In order to protect the publishers/authors of the work, they can choose to extend the copyright of the work after the initial copyright expires. However, since money is needed to enforced copyright, the authors would pay for the extension of the copyright (the cost of which should increases exponentially with time). If the publishers/authors choose not to extend the copyright, the works will go into the public domain. This will ensure that the public is able to benefit from the copyright work (eg in the case the book and gone out of print, the public still can make copies of the book after the copyright expires), the IP is protected, enforcement of IP is "self-funding", IP is not "wasted", and there is no need for more extension of the copyright period.

Wouldn't new startups with innovative products benefit then?
