Currently the college classroom consists of a professor lecturing to a large student population consisting of hundreds of pupils. Basically, the teacher has diarrhea coming out of their mouth and the students are forced to regurgitate the information and commit it to memory.
The method is a complete failure in a science classroom. The students must learn critical thinking skills and learn to apply these skills on exams. Instead of understanding the fundamentals of a concept, the students are forced to answer the questions from memory.
What the author was hinting at is a teaching method that is much more interactive for the students. For instance, in my chemistry class, at least half of the lectures consist of a group learning activity known as P.O.G.I.L. (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning). The activity (usually a worksheet) enables the students to interact with one another in groups of 4. Each member of the group has a responsiblity during the activity (Manager, Facilitator, Recorded, Reflector). During the activity, the students are engaged in understanding the concepts of the worksheet and working together to answer critical thinking questions. Instead of sitting in a classroom for an hour listening to the same teacher talk everyday, the students are effectively developing critical thinking skills and learning the fundementals of the subject at hand.

Finally, when we Americans have a gun held to our head and are in an energy crisis, we start doing something about it. The good news is that it's never too late to start doing something about it and I believe this country is finally headed in the right direction regarding the energy pandemic. A few years ago, there wasn't near the volume of discussion about energy and foreign oil dependance as there is today.
Remember that many Europeans also have access to free healthcare and higher education. They also have much better public transportation systems in Europe, so they are not as dependable on gas as Americans. Also, cars in Europe are much smaller and much more fuel efficient than cars driven in America.
Therefore, Americans are absolutely in trouble as the the gas prices keep rising.
I'm sure you have thought about the consequences of the human race being capable of living for 1000 years (overpopulation is obviously a subject that comes to mind). However, have you considered that there are some people that we don't want to live this long?
What if an Adolph Hitler lived to be 1000 years old? This world needs some people to die of old age. This would surely lead the world into an apocalypse.
