    Define "news relevant for geeks".

Where did I say in my message that slashdotters need to know about regular bunch of 3rd world problems?

Uh.."drawing it in crayon": all I was saying is we should appreciate the efforts and not belittle em.

Personally, I think Tour De France is more exciting AND challenging than answering questions on jeopardy...

Because my definition of competition is: pushing both the physical as well as mental conditioning of an individual. Obviously, you have to be in top physical shape to race in the Tour De France - not so in the case of Jeopardy.

Of course, we can always point to the negative and say stuff like "what about:

    rooting out corruption?
    solving the water scarcity problem?
    controlling pollution?"

etc. etc. I am not saying that we should ignore these problems and think the Digital Village is the greatest thing to happen in India. All I am saying is that we should appreciate the efforts and keep on workin to do more good deeds, not belittle the efforts by pointing out existing problems.

After all, quoting the Batman: "There will always be problems, but every problem has a solution."

  4. Re:Before outsourcing, "hardship" visas on Ask Indian Techies About 'Onshore Insourcing' · · Score: 1

Agreed. On a similar note, I am more concerned with outsourcing because it is making the corporations even richer (and hence even more powerful). For instance, this info. is from the wired article mentioned in the header:

Typical salary for a programmer in the US: $70,000
Typical salary for a programmer in India: $8,000

True, $70,000 is way too high and $8,000 is way too low. But my point is: where is the missing $62,000/person? What about $620,000 for 10 persons or $6.2 million for 100 persons...? You get the idea...

On a concluding note, it is not only the corporations who are becoming richer. But, as an Indian American - I know of the consequences this has on a MAJORITY of the Indian population - make them even poorer.

Hi DrPsycho, 1. About PERL...you can use LegOS..this is coool, since it replaces the firmware just like PbFORTH..but...it can be used in EITHER Linux or Windows. Personally, I want to use Linux..but I havent properly installed the cross-compiler in my laptop..I have to do it. Anyway, LegOS requires PERL..although the language used is C. Just go to Yahoo and search for LegOS for a whole bunch of websites. In addition, there are some web based cross-compilers. If u want to use PERL..suggest u download the code for LegOS for linux and modify it yourself to include PERL. But the default C language environment is AMAAAAAZING!!!!!! 2. There are other environments too...like NQC (Not Quite C), but they have some limitations. I suggest that if u really want to have fun, use LEGOS. 3. I am writing this because I am interested in robotics..trust me, LEGO MINDSTORMS IS AWEEEESOME..and it is really cool for robotics..other than buying a microcontroller board and building the robot from ground up. You are going to understand the Hitachi controller anyway if u want to do some really cool stuff. I suggest that u buy the kit (or the RCX at least) and try it out....have fun....its really cool to tell a robot to go and open ur refrigerator for you!!!!
