$99 gets you:
"5 CDs, 2 manuals (User Guide, Administration Guide)
Only sold together with SuSE Maintenance Program"
So it's $598, because the install kit isn't sold separately.
The only concern I have is how will they generate revenue? Will Slak Inc have to become a RedHat type of vendor to grab more marketshare- as well as gain income?
Does Slackware really have to do any of these things to still be a viable distribution? I don't think so. It's not all about the money, and it's not a competition to see who will be the most popular distribution.
I can see how it would be outrageous if someone declared possession of l0phtcrack to be illegal in a small town, but that's not really the case. I think CmdrTaco embellished this story a little bit - the people charged in this case allegedly used the tools in the commission of a crime.
I think this is akin to carrying a screwdriver. You can use it to fix a lock, or you can use it to break a lock, enter a building and steal the contents.

Slackware comes with an RPM to TGZ package converter if you're really hot to have easy packages.
rpm2tgz packagename.rpm installpkg packagename.tgz
Whoo, that's really hard.
