That's exactly what I'm talking about! The industry wants softwoods because their easy to process and fast growing. The fast growing trees of today are not any more resistant than the days of old growth lumber. In fact the wood is softer, weaker and dimensionally unstable. Old growth lumber is the most sought after wood for furniture because of this fact.
I'm not saying that we should not plant softwoods but just have more of a mixture. If not we'll all be stairing at those sh*tty pine cabinets years from now instead of enjoying the maple, oak, cherry, and the likes.
As a woodworker I can't wait to cut one down and make a Humidor!
Seriously though it would be good to see our own countries doing a little more to conserving and reseeding our forests with native trees rather than just the ones that'll make the most profit. It takes a Maple take 100 years to grow but that's no excuse to grow 4 crops of pine or the likes in that time solely for profit.

I was part of a support workers union at a College and I left because the union made it uneasy to expand. You weren't allowed to do anything outside your job description. If you were a sys admin you weren't allowed to touch networking etc. It had some upsides but not many.

I never saw any reason to run Linux on a Sparc in the first place. Solaris is stable, robust, and easy to administer it's also written specifically for the Sparc platform by the makers of that platform. Linux on the X86 is a different story because there isn't anything better.

Check out the article at the National Post. A Toronto based company called Mynix has a PC the size of a haldheld. Very cool, very portable! It's about 1" x 5" x 5 3/4", which is much smaller than a laptop and looks to have all the perks of a PC.
Nasa has announced that they're going to launch a probe in an attempt to crash it into the planets surface. One spokesperson was quoted "If they're there this ought to wake them up!"
