After reading the article I got a really uneasy feeling as if the author did not want to get flamed for not doing the tests properly, but still *wanted* to show MS Windows 2000 as the best and Red Hat as the wrost.
It seems that the tests results completly belie the conclusions drawn... Here are some things I noticed...
File system performance ----------------------- Test Conclusion : Windows 2000 sucks, RedHat is pretty good
Overall conclusion : Looks like no weightage was given to the overall conclusion based on these results
TCP Performance --------------- Test Conclusion : W2k seems to be the best, RedHat sucks but will get better
Overall conclusion : AHA... Something in which w2k is the best. Now I will be vindicated in calling w2k the best NOS and Redhat the worst
Management Tools ---------------- Test Conclusions : W2k tools are really polished and provide setting many system settings. No remote management. Redhat is definitly more klunky, but lets you do pretty much whatever you want to, and from where ever you want to.
Overall Conclusions : Since w2k tools look so much better, they must be better
Monitoring tools ---------------- Test results : w2k has graphical clients to monitor CPU/Memory usage. RedHat does not
Overall conclusion : We used the w2k graphical clients for monitoring the system resource usage while our tests were being conducted. We did not even bother to look at linux tools like g-top which do exactly the same thing, and more. Like process level control. Since we did not use these tools, they do not exist. Ergo w2k is better. So there. Also although Unix utilities are a lot more flexible, and can be scripted, since they are too complex for us, they are pretty much useless for everyone else as well
Client Management ----------------- Test Conclusion : w2k provides active directory and users and groups and oh my!!! Redhat only provides unix level control. Ha that old security model can't do users and groups and... well it can't do active directory so there!!!
Overall conclusion : w2k does active directory!! NAH NAH NAH NAH
And so on and so forth!!!!
It looks like they did put in some effort in doing the tests right. But it looks like they also put in a lot of effort into making the results fit their apparently pre-drawn conclusions
According to the last paragraph of the injunction, the injunction does not disallow links to sites which contain the code. Nor do they disallow discussion of the material. So here is a suggestion
How about having a slashdot posting, where people post only links to foreign sites that contain the code.
In a press release Microsoft announced today that they are entering into a stretigic partnership with COREL. This partnership will come about by a stock swap which will give Microsoft a 31% holding in COREL Corp.
This move immidiately brings Microsoft into the Linux arena with formidable weapons. COREL is Microsoft's main competitor in the Desktop Office Suite business. This not only gives microsoft a virtual monopoly on that front, but they now also have a Office Suite almost ready for the Linux Platform.
In addition to this, Microsoft has also in a single sweep entered the Linux Operating System Distribution arena with COREL's offering of the Debian based Linux distribution.
Seriously folks. Just think what a dark day it would be if something like this happens. Microsoft can virtually take over the market in one sweep. This is right in keeping with MS's embrace and extend policy.
Also uptil now MS had no direct method of entering into the Linux market, other than doing some of it's own R&D. This gives them a simple straight forward and effective avenue.
Hopefull antitrust laws will prevent this from happening though.
Yes I need to ask Why too. The why i want to ask is why do you want to get an Athelon? Just get a Dual Processor P II/III MB. With the price of Dual Processor Mother boards being as low as they are currently, The Dual Processor MB + 2x PII 450Mhz will still be cheaper than Athelon MB + 1x 700 Mhz Athelon. Whats more, you can later upgrade to PIII 800 Mhz processors when the price is right. So when Intel and AMD are batteling out at 1.2 GHz, you will already have a 1.6GHz system, and at probably a quarter the cost!!! You get the speed now, and the upgradability later with dual processor configurations. Intels been trying to thawart people using their processors in the MP configurations, but what they don't realize is that this is their greatest strength. If they catch on to this and start marketing it, it will be the end of AMD (Unless AMD can come out with some really cheap Dual Processor MB's for Athelon.)

The impression I had was that MacOSX was based on the BSD code base. Also don't they already opensource the BSD portion of their OS?
Also the BSD part of the MacOSX is already released under OpenSource. Not that this matters, there are enough BSD based opensource operating systems. FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD....
So this just sounds like a ploy by apple to get the support, and the press attention that opensource is getting lately.
The propriotary part is the Blue Box and the Yellow Box which sit on top of the BSD backend. Now if they were to Opensource this, that would be a major thing to talk about!!
What I am waiting for is a cheap Multiprocessing MotherBoard that will take PowerPC processors, and support Industry standard PCI/AGP cards and PC100/133 RAM (Maybe even DDR RAM;) ) and EIDE ATA devices. Would love to run Linux on one of those things. Of course I woulden't be able to run MacOS on it (Not if apple lives up to it's closed reputation) But then who wants to run MacOS on it anyways. Linux and BeOS will do just fine:).
I see a lot of posts about people complaining about there not being things like make in Corel. Well don't you see, Corel is really Debian with a pretty cover. Just install Corel, then run apt-get install make And voila you get make (Assuming your connected to the net of course:) ). Thats all there is to it. Debian rocks as far as upgrading and maintaining your system is concerned. And Corel is debian!!!
definitly Debian. Although they need to completly redo their release process (The new pooling idea being thrown around sound nice), they have made my life as a Linux user fun and enjoyable (more than it would have been w/o Debian anyways:)).

"If you were allowed to shoot Bill Gates, would you?"
;).
Don't go around asking that question in High Schools. These are bad times to be asking questions like that
Umm... You do realize I'm not American...
