Putting Skype and Ekiga in the same category ("Free"). This should be split between "Gratis" and "Libre". There is a huge difference.

Let's not forget this little gem: Facebook is trying to get into classrooms as an educational tool. Not only will the childre learn from a RIAA-approved curriculum, they will use only corporate, closed walled gardens as their learning and social platform. They will not know a world outside corporate control. For decades here in the Central Europe there was a special name for the perfect Soviet citizen: Homo Sovieticus. Not only does the corporatocracy in the United States (and the rest of the world, increasingly) create a Homo Corporaticus, it creates it in the image of the Eastern counterpart. Oh, it would be so funny had it not been so sad.

No, that's the shortest argument against it. And while I appreciate the sentiment, it is quite important to keep the debate around this topic on a level that allows for technical, philosophical and economy-based arguments to be made, otherwise we land up in a mud slinging contest ("you're a coward!", "oh yeah? well you're a terrorist-paedophile!") that anti-censorship folk would probably lose.

It is beyond moronic and deceitful, but the general public will not see it that way. They will see "porn" in the same category as "terrorist content" and once they hear about a friend or relative "opting-out" of the filter, it will paint a picture for them. And somehow I am not convinced it's not by design. This is what we get when the unwashed masses get their information from Daily Mail and do not receive proper schooling in topics like democracy, personal freedoms, etc.

It is impossible to measure the real (vs. perceived due to political reasons that we do not know of) impact of any single argument. At least, that's my experience with this.

I do not think internet filtering will become law in Poland anytime soon. There is a meeting of NGOs and Ministry of Justice on that topic planned during the next week, and we believe we can convince lawmakers that internet filtering is a bad idea.

I would like to remind you all that a year ago there was an idea for network filtering (in the context of anti-gambling crackdown), and the very same loosely-weaved group of NGOs and bloggers, on a similar meeting with the Prime Minister convinced the Government not to make it a law. So we have a good track record here. Hopes are up.
