Is UNIX An OS?

Did anybody consider how much MacWeek will be able to squeeze out of its advertisers, after it got/.'ed? Seems the best way to increase web traffic lately is to post something inflamatory about *nix on your site and hope the *nix community finds it.
Please understand, I didn't read the article. I do, however, hold the common belief of/. readers that an 'OS' doesn't have to have a GUI and media apps to be an OS.
Sorry to hear that you were betrayed by your employer. Had I been in your shoes, I might have quit. It would depend on my taste ( or distaste ) for my current employer/job.
In regards to how the IS guy should deal with the scanning for porn problem. I think that the best policy would be to warn the masses two or three times. Give them plenty of notice to stop the incoming offending material. Then when the scanner gets hits send notices both to HR and the employee. The nature of the material and ones relationship to the person receiving said material could result in a not-totally-unbiased reporting of incidents.
Did that make sense?
I'm probably going to seem righteous, but I'm of the mind set that has nothing to hide, so let them scan.
I've read and signed the Internet Policy here at __ ___________. I sometimes get offensive material (jokes, pictures,...). I think most employers are more worried about keeping harassement cases to a minimnum, than keeping employees hands off their peckers.
I believe that Bob-K and d106ene5 are correct. By the time the judgement against Microsoft is enforced Linux will be an even stronger competitor holding more of it's share of the market. Will it be on more computers that Microsoft's Windows 9x(200x)? Will Microsoft have ported it's office suite to Linux?
What I'd like to see come of this is (if a judgement is ever enforced against Microsoft) complete documentation of File formats and Network Protocols and anything else that would at least allow other OSs and Office suites to play nice with those who insist on keeping Microsoft products.
It's a free country and there are lots of MS stock holders who think it's the greatest thing running on silicon. A dear friend of mine holds several shares of MS and is blinded by his own financial well being. He can't understand why I run Linux (at home at least, I'm currently stuck on NT here at work) when everybody on the planet, or in the universe/cosmos runs MS products.
In summary, MS will survive the trial, but I'll continue the crusade against Bill Gates and MS. "The best revenge is living well." No, the best revenge is suffering zero down time.
I believe that bartenders have the responsibility to cut off their clients, but they can't be held liable for their actions. This is America, it's a free country and (without trying to sound too religious,) we have free will and can do what we want. Ultimately we are responsible for our own actions. Let's stop being victims.
ISPs can't monitor every bit that goes through their server. I'm also pretty sure that ISPs (like mine) make their clients sign all kinds of waivers that state that the ISP is not responsible for the clients actions and that illegal activity will constitute... blah, blah, blah....
This was just well planned and executed. UF and SegFault will hopefully be back up by lunch (tomorrow at the latest). The best practical jokes are just close enough to the edge of reality to make them hard to completely dismiss. While the litigation may be real, I doubt that a judge is going to rule against the First Amendment and close down those sites. If a judge did do that, I would imagine that only the portions which were offensive to the thin skinned corporation would be silenced.
Still kudos to UF and SegFault for banding together on April Fool's Day and providing entertainment.
Nah. Go for the pun. CowboySQL, or CmdrMako.
I'll go now.
