  1. Whose choice is this? on Fun Things To Do With a Math Or Science Degree? · · Score: 2, Insightful

"What are some creative, not too nerdy professions that nonetheless require a talent for math, engineering, or science?"

You are implicitly assuming here that your niece WANTS to make use of these things in her profession, which is a pretty bad thing to assume. Why don't you ask her what she wants?

I've experienced this constantly in my life. Relatives of all sorts tell me "You should become a doctor" or "You should become a radiologist" or whatever else. I turn around and say back to them, "Hmm, sounds like if you think radiology is so wonderful, maybe you should go back to school and become a radiologist."

It is, IMO, really rude to just start suggesting things to people. ASK what they like and what they want to do. If they don't know, there is no reason they even need to know yet.

Ask your niece what she is interested in and support her in her choice, or if she doesn't know what she wants to do, help her lead a life where it's ok not to know yet. Don't be a dick and try to force/coerce her into math or science just because she is good at it and you want her to do it. Being good at something doesn't automatically dictate that you will enjoy a career in that field.

  2. E-beam lithography on Any Suggestions For a Meaningful Geeky Wedding Band? · · Score: 4, Interesting

My brother recently proposed to his girlfriend by doing the following: (caption from his photo follows, which I do not have permission to post)

"Optical microscopy image of the engagement device under white light. The bare Si/SiO2 substrate appears violet while the metal (chrome/gold) artwork appears yellow. The artwork was patterned using electron beam lithography and metalized using thermal evaporation. The artwork was created using QCad, a linux-compatible free software alternative to AutoCAD."

The image was the 2 of them sitting out in the wilderness watching the Perseid meteor shower and can just barely be seen with the unaided eye. He proposed while the 2 of them were out watching it, and it was also what they did for one of their very first dates. He took her out to the same spot as on their earlier date, then gave her the device, which I hear is going to be mounted in some kind of clear polymer and mounted on a ring or necklace.

I will most definitely have a high geekiness standard to live up to when I propose or am proposed to.

  3. Reasonably strong case on Facebook Sues German Company, Claims Ripoff · · Score: 1

Upon seeing StudiVZ for the first time last year when I moved to Germany, my first thought was, "Hmm, they must have bought the rights to use the code from Facebook." After using it for a while though it became clear it is distinctly different from Facebook, but I'm inclined to think that courts won't see it like that.

Having a similar look, feel, and even layout really shouldn't be enough to be called a copy, since in this case the imitation isn't necessarily to try to make people use StudiVZ instead of Facebook. Facebook has a minuscule portion of the market here in Germany, with StudiVZ very clearly in the lead. I get the feeling this case is simply retribution for that, since apparently Facebook wants to break into the market here to a greater extent.

On an interesting note, I've yet to meet a single Myspace user here.
