  1. Here's an Idea on RIAA Claims Initial Legal Win vs. Napster · · Score: 2

Could someone please publish a classified ad, perhaps in the NY Times, which says: "I have some copies of Metallica tapes. Call me and I'll give/sell you one". Then sit back and watch the music industry lawyers duke it out w/ the NY Times lawyers.....

  2. ISP KNOWINGLY distributed this virus on Arrest In The ILOVEYOU Case · · Score: 1

If you read the CNN story carefully you will learn:

1.) There was a more dangerous part of this virus which stole passwords.

2.) This part of the virus was removed by the ISP very early after being alerted by a European company.

What this implies, (but which is never stated) is that the ISP must have KNOWINGLY distributed the weaker version of the virus. Why didn't they remove the weak version as well? I find this hard to imagine....perhaps this suggests that some important info is being withheld.

    -gnarly.

ps. Here's some quotes from CNN:

The virus also corrupted some files stored on hard drives, particular
picture .jpg files and sound .mp3 files. But a second part of the
virus, disabled before it could do widespread damage, would have been
    far more damaging.

    [....]
Investigators now theorize the virus was actually a scam designed to
get the originator free Internet access. When the virus was activated,
in addition to destroying files and replicating itself, it accessed a
program that would search out login names and passwords, then mail
them back to the Love Bug author.

    [....]
Ayre said a European ISP notified Sky Internet of the virus, and it
was quickly disabled. That portion of the virus affected only about
2,000 people worldwide, mostly in Europe and Asia, he said, and the
company is in the process of notifying all of those victims.

Sign me up for the cellphone jammer. I want
to declare the 100 foot radius around myself
    to be "cellphone free".

Perhaps one problem is that cellphones use different frequencies, though perhaps all within a certain band. To get around this, perhaps one could build a "reflector" which simply reflects back the incoming waves, BUT with a 180 degree phase shift, which then destructively interferes with the original waves.

  9. Brown Dwarf Background Info. on 13 Free-Floating Extrasolar Planets Discovered · · Score: 3

Regarding these new discoveries, it will be important to make sure that the discovered objects are actually members of the Orion GMC, and not more distant objects. Spectroscopic measurements will help to do this. The fate of stars/brown dwarfs/giant planets is determined primarily by their mass:
If Mass > 75 jupiters then Hydrogen fusion: Star
If 13 > Mass > 75 jupiters then Deuterium fusion: brown dwarf.
If Mass less than 13 jupiters then no fusion: planet.
At least that's one way to define the terms. The very informative Sci. Am. article mentioned above can be found here If you want to Create your own brown dwarfs, and see what their spectra look like, try this site. -chris
