Is anyone else p.o.'ed like me that the "STOP"
light on older versions of Netscape has been
replaced by the confusingly-similar word "SHOP",
with the STOP button FAR displaced to the right?
This is clearly an AOL ploy.
Also, one of my favorite features is search within
a page (ALT-F), which was previously a button,
(Binoculars symbol). I think AOL is manuvering
Netscape to discourage you from going where you want to go, and encouraging you to only follow linkes, ie to their banner-laced sites.
If someone can suggest fixes to the above, or can
suggest an open source browser that lets you configure the buttons, I would appreciate it.
(Disclaimer: I have not tried other browsers
besides netscape and IE)
The Electoral College was established by Article II and the Twelfth
Amendment of the United States Constitution. I support our
Constitutional system of representative democracy. I am disappointed
at the diminishing number of voters coming out....[blah blah]
Ok W., I take it this means you won't go whining when you loose the election inspite of winning the popular vote.
Viva the Electoral College.
All Microsoft needed to do was to put a chunk of code for some unimportant future project in an internet-accessable area, and let the script kiddies + Outlook do the work. Then they can
honestly say to the FBI "Our Vital source code
was stolen"
They need not have orchestrated the theft, nor hired the thieves, simply relied on their own "security". Much less "conspiracy" is required than some theorists have suggested.
What would you do with Billions of dollars in cash assets, a floundering business model, and a bevy of lawyers depressed at loosing to Janet Reno every step of the way? Get ready for sue-a-thon!(tm)
You cannot patent an algorithm or a math equation,
however you can control content you own through copyrights.
One solution, it seems to me would be to set up a similar website, with each useful equation taken from a source other than CRC. Ie derive it yourself OR better yet, look in an old math book
for which the copyright has expired, perhaps one in Germany or something.
I realize this requires work, but if everyone supplied one equation..... Well just a suggestion...Disclaimer: I never got to see the site sadly....
Well, if reading your employee's mail is OK I guess this means that all Brittish Citizens, who together employ every Member of Parliment, have the right to read the email of their employees. Not sure the best way to read the email of any given MP, sniffers? Carnivore? Any ideas?
Nazgul,
I wonder if you have found that this an effective
measure of "politics". As suggested in the above
book, The Trouble with Dilbert, you may find very
little politics at places which display Dilbert
cartoons. At such places, worker gripes are something to be laughed about, but not really addressed.
For example, do the downtrodden characters in Dilbert ever try to form a union?
Demand Respect? Demand the benifits workers in most other civilized countries have, (childcare,
healthcare, 1month vacations, etc.). The claim is
that the answer is no (not being a Dilbert reader
I can't confirm this). Now I'm not an office worker
but the claim is that a Dilbert office is an obedient office.
AOL is one of 66 Smart corporations which donated over $50k to both the Bush and
Gore campaigns. So don't expect any serious
constraints on AOL/Time Warner from either of these two would-be prez's.
Please help billioniares to better rule us by
voting for one of their paid candidates, if you live in the U.S. See BillionairesforBushorGore.com

For a funky purely electric one-person car check out the Sparrow
Its a 1 person vehicle, meaning that if you are driving you are 100% occupancy, so you get to use the carpool lane, and can bypass bridge tolls. Also since its so small, insurance is cheap (same as motorcycle insurance because it can't cause any
damage to other cars) It also parks in motorcycle slots.
Here in California, every new supermaket, mall & anything with a big parking lot has special parking spots with EV chargers. So getting your amps is not hard unless you go on a long drive out of town. The Sparrow is basically a nice urban commuter car which uses no fossil fuels. Obviously its not a "family car"
At a meeting of the American Institute of Petroleum in 1956, despite
protests from his employer's public relations department, Dr. M. King
Hubbert correctly predicted that USA oil production would peak around
1970. In 1974, he predicted that world petroleum output would peak
around 1995. Based on current data and new analytical techniques,
recent studies by Dr. Colin J. Campbell and others conclude that
world petroleum output will peak during the first decade of the 21st
century and will decline rapidly thereafter.
Just make sure that nobody sees the code on your
shirt. When I wear mine, in order to avoid
tarfficking in a circumvention device, I always make sure to keep my back against the wall, which, apperently is the also position free software advocates are in for some time to come....
In preparing my dissertation I read recently that the "Berne Convention" held that even if one does not put a page which says "Copyright owner 2000"
One still automatically retains a copyright for a thesis.
Incidentally, my soon-to-be-submitted dissertation on astronomy contains several computer programs written in a proprietary language (IDL-interactive data language) However, FSF encouraged me to release the software under the GPL, since the software itself can be free even if you need to pay for a proprietary language to run it.
Especially Telling is the return on investment
big companies get from buying politicians, which makes 50-100% returns from the stock market look pathetic.
Also check out the list of companies who have bought BOTH
Bush and Gore
So am I. Could barely make out a vague "S" shape in that article. Had a hell of a time w/ the resistors in physics lab. Most people's concept of color is rather arbitrary as I like to point out to them. Here's a example:
I see "green" stoplights as PURE WHITE, whiter than car headlights. Most people call these "green" lights, and they also say that grass is "green".
What's intriguging is that the light that comes from grass & that which comes from "green" stoplights MUST be different, because I can distinguish them. (Spectroscopic analysis would confirm this.) So from my perspective non-colorblind people have a difficency because they use the same word to describe two "colors" which are clearly distinct to me. (even though, if pressed they admit that they are different shades of green)
I'd prefer to skip these arbitrary definitions, & just say, for example, "Hey, I really like your lamda = 750 nm dress!"
If these optical mice are like the ones I'm familiar with on Suns, they have one fatal flaw: Mouse requires a certain kind (reflective) mousepad. I can't wait till a business converts its 100 computers to M$ optical mice, then one disgruntled employee, on his way out, swipes all the mousepads.
As I recall at one point during the negociations Gates admitted off camera that he would be willing to settle for "opening the source code" or some language like that. The next day he denied it but several reporters heard him say it. Clearly, when bargaining you don't want to give away what your cave-in point is.
Does any one remember this incident better than me?
(JUNE 2, REDMOND, WA) The Canadian government and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced today that in exchange for $70 Billion worth of MSFT shares, Canada will now become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft. The deal includes all Canadian provences except Quebec, which will finally become independant, although they will only be allowed to use Macintoshes.
Thanks for the comments & clarifications/.'ers. They were much more informative than the CNN article.
Still interesting that they were hacked by someone whom they had banned. However I think one story said that he came in via another ISP which, obviously, had not banned him.
How long will it be before the author of this virus comes up with another one which, upon excecution:
1.) Downloads the kernel
2.) Alters the MS startup files to install/run linux
3.) Reboots
Or something more clever than that?

Perhaps if we all just listen to the audio it won't be so slashdotted....something to remember in the future
Just wondering, is {} pronounced
"O-pen-brak-et-klozd-brak-et"
Or is there a Dutch pronunciation???

According to the best estimates, The Earth's oil supply will last another 10 years maybe 15. See http://www.hubbertpeak.com for excellent details.
