  1. " ~users -- it isn't rocket science. (tm) " on OSX To Feature Portable User Accounts? · · Score: 1

I just have to chime in...

"Windows has always contained tools to migrate user data..."

Yes, tools. Not a simple conventionlike put them ~user/
    FOR EXAMPLE, obeythefist.

    >> Vista contains several new tools to automate migration, backup, import and export of user data, and even more beneficial, Vista is designed from the start to combine the profile data, user files and other miscellaneous profile stuff into one folder, stored under "Users". No more "Documents and Settings", which was a little unwieldy to remember.

Tools seem forever needed, in your universe, instead of putting configuration files in easy-to-find locations; adding ridiculous directory names like "Documents and Settings" ... your little unwieldy non-mneumonic, as you call it.

    ~users -- isn't rocket science.

That evidence was one man talking about "discussions" -- I'm biased against Microsoft, but I want to see more evidence. Money exchanging hands. A relative given a highly-paid job. Something.

  3. Re:National soverignty vs the Internet vs pedophil on Google Denies Data In Brazil Orkut Case · · Score: 1

Please note that Google is asked not for IP's but for the identity of the persons. Users of Google "products" such as Orkut, gMail, Google Checkout, customized homepage, etc., gradually provide increasingly explicit information on who they are.

I don't know if it's for better or worse, but Google is very likely able to provide names and addresses, not only IP's.

I use enough Google gizmos that I'm damned paranoid. They know specifially who I am, what I read, my searches, etc. Hell, I even clicked on a /. link to a Google image search for Child Porn. (No, I'm not a pedophile; the link was posted on /. to prove that there *was* child porn out there.)

  4. Re:What about : increased suckage ==decreased sale on Does File-Sharing Really Hurt the Music Biz? · · Score: 0, Flamebait
Pah to the so-called suckage factor. When we are young, we are into music, we listen to it fanatically over and over, sing the songs with heart, and buy the CD's to blast in our cars. When we are, ahem, no so young, we simply listen to what we grew up with, and stop buying CD's. ABBA? Foreigner? C'mon, there is rampant suckage even in your CD collection. Suckage is an invention of the jaded elderly, to dis' the new music.

For some reason, that number is down to 9 (http://www.lesoir.be) or 3 (lesoir.be), and there are apparently no omitted results if you search using google.com instead of google.be ... which I find odd.

  8. MS About to Capitalize on Flaws on Windows Is 'Insecure By Design,' Says Washington Post · · Score: 2, Interesting

In the past week, the Merc has been running articles quoting Microsoft authorities as saying, essentially, "Honest Injun we WANTED to require automatic updates, but we thought people would be paranoid of our intentions, so we made updates optional! Now look at the chaos!"

My prediction: There WILL be an attempt by Microsoft, probably successful, to make sure all future Windows versions automatically check for and download updates -- not only bug fixes, but also updates for furthering their own inimical combinations of big brother and forced marketing.

  9. "No Pain Intended" in Darwin Awards on Examining the Darwin Awards · · Score: 1
I am the woman behind the Darwin Awards website. Back when the idea was young and the Awards were circulated in emails in college circles, the chance of a relative finding out about a loved one's nomination were virtually nil. Back then, it was OK to take the "We don't pull no fuckin' punches" attitude that Tackhead espouses.

Nowadays, Darwin Awards enjoy increasing visibility and are therefore capable of causing anguish to families of the deceased. My intent is to provide sick humor, not to shove a hot poker into the emotional edifices of families. www.darwinawards.com doesn't use last names, avoids going for the easy and sleazy celebrity punches, and, when requested by survivors, will edit a story to remove references that make it obvious who is being slammed.

This is ethical and considerate behaviour.

Meanwhile, my favorite Darwin Award is the fellow who kept a loaded gun on his nightstand. One night, the phone rang...
