Would like to see the extended to the UK (I know MBNA have an operation over here as I used to have one of their cards). Guess it's time to hassle them directly.

    Latest info also states....

    1) Bill says he's pretty confident windoze 2000 will ship this year - said at DELL's conference earlier this week. ie it might not ship this year!

    2) Latest info to analysts from M$ says they expect to earnings from w2k till Q2 next year - correlates well the above.

Looks like betting the family jewels on w2k was abad move Mr Gates.

Now that there's some muscle behind Star Office and KOfffice is developing nicely Unix (Linux/*BSD/Solaris...) on the desktop could be worthwhile looking at for major corporates.

    Hi

I'd recommend Orca (http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Thinkta nk/4996/) it does exactly what you want. Its based on rrd (already mentioned) and SE (the performance analysis programming language from SUN). Check out the Performance tuning COlumn of Sunworld (http://www.sunworld.com) as a good resource too.

I thought this sort of technology had already been looked at at rejected as it provided too many false negatives, which corporates hated. I read this some where recently (Computing Weekly -in the UK)????? when this whole thing of virus like behaviour was discussed in the aftermath of BO2K. Still, it was probably marketing speak for "oooo hadn't thought of that".

This is similar to the test the they put SQL-Server 7 through. Shows up really bad problems (which they always seem to have). Shame they don't test this sort of thing in house more before 'egg-on-face' problems.

I haven't laughed so much since zipexplorer came out. ISS have wonderful marketing spin, I mean, how difficult is it to 'crack' things when you've source (as other people have pointed out). Come on Kris, I wasn't born yesterday.

I'm now waiting for a modified zipexplorer that includes the BO2K client, then we can all go back to installing proper email servers on our lans.

    Hi
Its available in Hull (via Kingston telecom) and limited access in London (via BT). The BT London access is a 'trial', they are not promoting it heavily and seem to be having problems - I think they are trying to get people on the homeHighway connections rather than DSL.

I know there are lots of people in the UK shouting for DSL, but BT is dragging it's feet and as there ain't much competition in this area.....

  17. PHB backing on Ask Slashdot: Securing Systems you don't Manage · · Score: 1

There are several things that are useful here.

The first is that you must have senior management backing for the need for an overall control body.

You then need to populate this control body with people who knwo what they are talking about and have the people skills the sell the solutions - not easily found.

Basically you need to establish the program with senior PHB backing. Once you've done this THEN you can set about all the good stuff previously mentioned about security policies etc.

A good book to help I've found is "Information System Security Officer's Guide - Eatablishing and Managing an Information Protection Program" by Dr Gerald L Kovacich ISBN0759698969.
