For me, I need to be able to run to a local store and buy parts if I need them asap and get anything in my shoprunning.
Can't do that with dell, the've let me down far too many times in the past.
And there's a local company who does good work and is reasonably priced.
I can spec out the system I want on mwave.com, send them the specs and they buy it, build it and deliver it for usually within about %10 of what I'd pay online for parts.
Using OTS components has saved my butt many times.
Try finding a proprietary dell powersuply at compusa... Not gonna happen. But they have atx ones by the lot.
More importantly, there's not the click----(delay)---response of Powerpoint. I know you can probably turn it off, but I *ALWAYS* get annoyed at the delay of PPt.
PDF's in preview from lyx either manual or using beamer are instantanrous page switched on my aging g3 700 iBook.
Keynote switches occur just as you hit the key.
And the poster who flamed about the cost of keynote vs ppt vs Lyx/latex is also missing a few figures.
1. wintel laptop: $1000 2. FULL version of office $500 (you *need* if for scientific formulas, else you get into trouble sometime.) 3. Mathtype or other real equation editor for the office app, since equation editor bundled sucks major wind. $300 or so.
Latex on a PII 300 with linux : about $300 and an hour to learn how to use beamer.
That this meeting format method may even crop up on some HR person's desk as the next idea to try at m$.
I mean, apache's clearly costing a lot less to make into a good product than IIS. And compare the relative profitability... hehe...ale and couches at redmond. slashdot article coming next month...
Um... the floppy the company *probably* installed for $150 cost them less than $10. It's the troubleshooting and labor involved.
I personally thing the uberparent article ask/. poster is getting mauled. If they have to go through hoops with the leasers, they really need to outsource or build their own boxen.
If leasing isn't working, then STOP it. It sound't like it isn't working for him. Unless they need those 800 machines to be NEMA rated or something, the'd do better off just building some and then just replacing and upgrading parts as they break. For the money you can lease most systems for a year, you can buy/build a box that will last three.
er... yeah! That's the problem! If google is configent that I'll click it, then it gets downloaded. I'm sure enough people search for smut on google and then click the top results regularly for google to become confident that most people who enter in that sort of search click the results.
It's an ease of access issue. Just like with DVD copying. it's not the fact that it can't be done. Anyone determined is gonna get it copied anyways. it's to make the script kiddies an non-organized wankers unable to use the imagry/copy the dvd.
That way you only have to look at the select group of peeps who can pull off getting the dvd copied/imagery from other sources, and you're fine.
With Dell, it's pick any two day. Well, actually, pick one.
We have a dual g5 tower that you can't tell is on and it crunches numbers faster than the intel xeon preceision 650's from dell. Which are Loud! and Hot!.
The air is barely warm at the back of the g5.
That's not a "Hey ! Look at me!" featurism. It's a "Hey! I was designed properly and you can ignore me!" featurism.
Oh... so tempting to make a comparison of the severity and nubmer of patches... But I'm getting frustrated at this prinstein and little touched windows laptop which just simply refuses to power off, refuses to see my pocketpc and refuses to use it's wifi card.
It just can't shut itself down... So is dell the culprit, or ms?
All I want to do is download the SP, or copy it to the machine via cf cards... (usb is being stupid, my SD reader is my pocketpc...)
Still a long way to go... It's one thing to get the machines we make into cells, it's quite another to understand what the hell's going on.
Just look at proteinsl; they provide structure, enzymes, channels (for transport of molecules through cell walls) and other rolls. Yet, we still can't deal with more than the smallest ones.
The benefits of this advancement lay in the little things, like now being able to put a "camera" of sorts in cells in vito!
So , that means if I *accidentidly* search for a pron related topic, or pron is definatly in the top responses from google, It gets downloaded without me doing anything?
Can't wait to see them bringing down the ceilings in old campus buildings. (We always run stuff in the plenum.:) 0 )
I'm still not sure I'm okay with the potential for interfreaence in these... it's just too thin... I'd love to see how many u can stack on top of one another before they break.
Pattents should go through some sort of peer review process. (I'm not going to argue the details, as IANAL.) But something like what publishing takes in the scientific journal world.
It can't be expected for the pattent jockies to be able to tell what's crap or now. Heck, we can't tell in a lot of markets since we may not know anything about them.
They either have to start a peer revierw, or pay for experts.
I mistyped anyways, hit sp4 instead of sp2... You're right.
I also had my personal favorite when upgrading a few win98 boxes to winsp4... The upgrade whent "fine" but the system slowed to about 1/4 the speed as before.
I beat my head against the wall for hours and finally started troubleshooting the hardware. Pull ed the cdrom drive, and suddenly, the box started working again.
I've sence learned to turn on logging all the time. (cause I later found out it was in the system logs, but I just didn't look.)
There was nothing wrong with the cdrom drive in win98, but through 2k on it, and instamatic-molasses.
Just as long as M$ or someone else doesn't patent the use of the "back" button for evading this sort of ware attack. All it would take was calling it the anti-malware function or something, and we're tanked.
I'm sure google will straighten themselves out in a few days. It's what they do.:)
I have to admit, it's been a long time since an automatically installed m$ patch has fried a box. (I remember it happening regularly around win2k sp4 days).
The fact that most of their code sits around for like 2 years before actually getting in the download hopper is sickly amusing.
Shure this will push things ahead *just* a touch.
My only worry, is; what if this was the plan all along. Slowly just sort of start sending out patches quicker, maybe push all those product releases that have been int the "2year" range to the 1"year " range, and viola! Instomagic improvment and it didn't cost them much if anything.
I just plain don't watch tv anymore. My free time is spent hanging out on RTCW servers with friends, spending time with the gf/watching movies, or reading or playing instruments in several local bands.
I've played 50 hours of rtcw in a month before, but it's been down to 12 or so recently.
RTCW has my attention, it's relatively inexpensive, and fun. So I do it.
I could be doing a lot worse: drugs/crime/hotrodding around town looking for trouble/bars, etc...
All I can say is, the're good hardware. Considering the're being built with the same machines that were used to make the SINgars for the tanks and helicopters.:)
I've played with a few finished units, and would buy one over the cheap feeling palms these days any time.
I was going to post "it's the other way around" but actually, craftsman has gone way down in quality rescently.
Either way, I bought a mac to run linux apps, but I also stick with osX for the desktop and run X11 over it. it's only a g3 700 iBook, but it still feels fine.
My gaming machine runs linux all the time (rtcw nightly with it) and my work box, is a desktop machine, and runs linux too.
I wouldn't use a Mac with Linux on it for a desktop, but LT doesn't *need* a desktop for what he's doing.
Ah, well. It's not like he's using a Sun or anything. Move along people.:)
Every shop's different.

try running lyx stable on windows
then talk to me about compatability for the software *I* need
then grab a mac and install fink
open source at your fingertips

Next up is maping protein 3rd and 4th D structure. Cause we only undestand very little about the littlest of proteins.

Keynote or beamer/lyx
yes.
And it would look better.

Next year...!!!
Wil W. wont be there anyways...

Um.. I havne't had a *single* windows computer that I bought which I haven't had to do a reinstall at least once.
Heck, I usually can't go to someone's house to work on their comp without having to reinstall the os.
125W .
holy crap...
We're starting to get into the range of *NEW HOUSE WIRING REQUIRED* for computers.
And most people don't need much more than what's in my pocketPC to do their email/wrd proc. hehe.

Peer review, blind, is a very elagant solution.

U made the point: TV watching.
..

I'm not shocked they haven't fixed it.
Call it the onset of apathy.
Can we seriously expect anything else from M$ yet?
This is like a 10 year old problem though. God what a mess.
