I know the interface that this was written for already exists (and has for a long time), but this could be quite useful for mobile/wearable computing. Unfortunately, most mobile devices don't have a parallel port, but many do have USB.
Anyone think of creating a USB interface for it? There are some cool (and cheap) USB interface chips out now. (check out Circuit Cellar Magazine)

I can absolutely identify. While I haven't done any real programming in years, I do enjoy advanced administration, learning, experimenting, just plain keeping my skills up. Once in a while, I get blocked as you describe... no biggie, I have tons of hobbies to keep me busy. I'll just switch to working on my cars (I love modifying and restoring old sports-cars). When I get tired of that... I just switch to electronics instead, etc. One thing is definately cool, when you can take all of your hobbies and merge them at some point. I plan to use MegaSquirt in my TR7 and I may just make my own EFI brain from scratch for my TR8 (all three hobbies merged). If I ever get tired of the above... I can always go snorkelling.:^)
People who are willing to DIE for their cause are
NOT going to be "following the rules" and using
only "approved" software.
A "card carrying Mensa member" (who can't spell,
even in his own.sig), should have thought of that!
Heck, I doubt very seriously (if they were using
computers at all) that their communications even
WERE over port 25 (SMTP aka: email). Anyone who
really wants to keep communications private CAN,
very easily... use your imagination in that
officially approved brain of yours!
Well... originally the meanings were as follows:
(digital RGB)
CGA = 320x200x4 colors
EGA = 640x400x8 and lower
(analog RGB)
VGA = 640x480x16 colors
SVGA = anything better (even 640x480x256!)
Later, it was altered:
VGA = 640x480x* (any color depth)
SVGA = 800x600
XGA = 1024x768i (interlaced - IBM's original XGA)
EXGA = 1280x1024
The Unix modes 1152x864 and 1152x900 never got
those silly acronyms, since the Unix world is
typically more precise.
The SXGA, SXGA+, and UXGA labels are just
marketing B.S., moreso than the originals... at
least they were named after the video cards that
supplied those resolutions. (you just _knew_ if
a monitor was advertized as VGA it could _not_
display 800x600!)
This is actually kind of funny reading this... seeing as the eye of hurricane Irene is just starting to hit my house.
Water in the yard is, well... there's no yard. In fact, even though I'm on "high ground", I have inches of water in the back room - coming from what used to be the yard.
I've only heard a couple trees come down so far.
Oh well, I guess it could be worse... wait a minute, it _will_ get worse, it's only half over! (once the ground is saturated, it gets deep FAST!)
It is nice to have hefty UPS's.:^) (yes, the one in the back room is now elevated)
OK, I'll stop babbling now.
Good luck to those in N.C.! This is a mild hurricane by wind speed, but it's dumping an incredible amount of water!
Oh yeah - I would put up a webcam, but there isn't enough light (already tried).
...after all, you're the one who has to live with the results.:)
Seriously, a lot of people seem to like the $200 Fraunhofer encoder over LAME, but for the music I've encoded, I think it sounds better. (Fraunhofer's sounded muddy to me)
It all depends on your music... for example, there's a certain synth used by a certain group that sounds absolutely horrible under any of the ISO based encoders I've tried... yes, even Blade. LAME is the _only_ one that could reproduce it, except the pricey one mentioned above. (this is at 128kb/s)
The ones I would recommend trying are:
Fraunhofer (demo, capable of 30-second encodes) LAME Blade 8hz
Those are some of the ones I've tried... can't remember the others (I already deleted them).
Anyways, use cdparanoia to rip a song or two that you really like (and are _very_ familiar with) and use each one to encode it. Listen carefully to each one ( loud!:) and you'll probably notice a difference.
If you decide to use something other than cdparanoia to rip the CDs, be sure to rip the same track several times (into different files) and compare them with "diff". I tried one that is supposed to be based on cdparanoia, and every single rip was different! With cdparanoia, you'll get the same data every time. (YMMV)
The patch is teeny. As someone else already posted, it should have been a pre-patch.
Most of it's m68k and arm updates... there's a few other tiny patchlets for tcp.h, fs/buffer.c, aha152x.c, ide.c, ide-dma.c, and ip_masq_quake.c inside. That's about it.
Unless you're having trouble with 2.2.8, triggered by anything listed above, don't bother downloading it. Wait for the next one.
The humans who breed the most are (on average) the least intelligent/advanced/etc.
Look around at the most intelligent people you know, or even just the people with the physical traits that make them somewhat more advanced than average, most don't have any kids, or maybe 1. Now look around at all the people you see with 4+ kids... scared yet? You should be. The human race is in trouble.
Just because something might benefit humans, does not mean we will evolve in that direction. I saw a drawing that a "scientist" made about what we will evolve into years back... it was rediculous. The creature was short, bald, with long fingers with pads on the ends for pushing buttons. This can't happen unless all the people who have trouble reaching buttons _die_.
They may not have pinch-rollers, but the tape path is _anything_but_straight!_ In trying to debug some problems with a DLT drive at work, I pulled the lid (Quantum DLT4000) and watched the tape being drawn through... if that's straight, one of us is living in an alternate universe!
Oh, and there _is_ contact with the head, or it wouldn't work. The bernoulli effect does not apply to something that can (and does) stop and change direction on a very frequent basis.
Worked for me... Red Hat 5.1, rvplayer 5.0.0.35, kernel 2.2.6, using the 2.2.x/rvplayer problem workaround found on www.real.com. I watched more than half of it, but I did lose connection with their server a couple times... but it _did_ work.
Are you able to view other content on the ZDTV site? If not, you may have a config problem. I've watched more than half a dozen clips tonight alone with no problems.
It's odd that the speech was given in the morning (according to other posters), but the broadcast was at a specific time in the afternoon. I was able to watch most of it, but lost connection with their server for about 10-15 minutes, twice!
It was streaming, as if it were live, so when I was able to reconnect, I'd missed a big chunk of it. Does anyone know if they have a mirror, or an archive to download from?
If you select "Video Archive" from the page, RealPlayer responds with an error: "Requested file not found...".
That was LINUS's baby, you... you... you Anonymous Coward!;^)
If you like Jobs, you ought to see Sun's CEO give a speech some time! HE is funny!
Anyways, his jokes were funny, what you could hear of them. The only bad part about the broadcast was the camera-work. It was too shakey, jumping all over the place, including many shots of Linus' kneecaps, the floor, the ceiling... and whenever anyone in the audience asked a question, all you heard was thumbs fumbling with the camera. The guy really needed a tripod and external microphone!

Is it just me, or doens't it seem like LEP technology
has more promise of ease-of-manufacturability and
longevity?
LEP's have been demonstrated for years... anyone
know why their development is either stalled or kept
secret?
(LEP = Light Emitting Polymer - a similar technology,
with a different, more stable source for the materials)
Use google for more info.
