If you've ever seen www.icehotel.com, you could see how even a bed make out of legos could probably be considered comfortable enough to rent out for the night.
Did MacNN sign a non-disclosure agreement(NDA)? If they did, then they are probably in violation. It is one thing to dislike a company for hijacking your software and hardware and using unfair business practices, it is another thing entirely to hate them for trying to protect their product's competitive edge by not telling other companies what features are in it before it even comes out! I know that if I spent 5 years developing a technology, was just putting the final touches on it, waiting to release it, and some spy from a big company, say Microsoft, but I don't care if it was Virginia Systems or my 3rd cousin, took my code, and put it into their product, before mine was released, I would be ultra-pissed. Plus, NDA's are serious business. If you are not going to be a good business partner, you won't continue to be a business partner.
Some people have too much time on their hands. Putting a shiny label on something to sell it better is kinda, ironic. It's sorta like changing the date on a carton of milk...
Perhaps it is innovative because it suchs more of your processor into viewing text (whoopee!)
Why use a cell phone on an airplane? After takeoff, it isn't going to work very well anyways... Usually not at all. The radio signals sent out by the towers just aren't that strong. Heck, you can barely go through an office building using a cell phone. You CAN'T go through a tunnel. Cell phone usage on aircraft just isn't terribly practical. There are other technologies better suited to it. Of course, don't use a different technology that will cause the plane to crash ending your life.
Ahh, I'd like to see BBS doors on the cellphone, but the ones with turn limits. I could just imagine trying to beat the one guy who has no life, who carries his cell phone with him all day, who can afford to keep playing constantly, who takes 100 turns a day in some given game. While I have time for about 10 turns a day. Almost as big a productivity killer as/.
In his works, Gibson makes a lot of references to past events, but his stories are in the future. The 90 years is 90 years behind a date in a story of his, I believe that this quote was from Idoru. The quote isn't stating an actual FACT, it is setting the tone for the plot of his book.
Well, I have experienced an office building where the power backups and alarms go off about once an hours... This was due to the fact that we had a large office building + a LOT of network/server support crammed into a pipe that was JUST BARELY enough to serve us.
The whole situation of this case has got to be one of the biggest insults to justice that I have ever heard. The people responsible for bringing this case about should be the ones rotting in jail.
The technology is nice, but it's really not that new. The advent of flat panel displays on the desktop is what really makes this practical (I laugh slightly when I call it practical) on the desktop. If you have ever been to Disney, they were thinking about putting a similar device into their "innoventions" exhibit at least 5 years ago, and there were devices that did similar things too.
It's cool and all, but not AMAZING. When I was a kid I drew plans for something similar. The theory has been around since long before any of us were born (calling it theory is a bit sketchy since it was theory in the dark ages).
Also, for $12K, I can get a head mounted display, head tracker, all wireless, and still have some left for some neato controllers to hold.
Ok, first, porting all of this software would mean undoing all of the damage that M$ has already done. They will have to make it so that their programs can work nicely with other programs in order to do this. Second, they will only port their programs if they don't still view windows as the dominant OS, or at least try to keep it that why, they may very well do this. In 10 years, they can reunite. IF they were working under the table, and they have been so far, they could plan on reuniting from day one. Third, porting their applications means complying with the real industry standards, not the fake ones that they make up to stay in power. This means that they have to make programs that actually work. It also means that their programs will compete on their quality (though at least for a while, the name will keep them going). Supposing that my software is competing with theirs on the basis of its quality. Supposing that they are actually writing good software. Supposing that they aren't just wedging me out with monopolistic practices... Then I really don't care if they are the #1 by market share. As long as they actually deserve it, I'm fine with that. So, if IE gets ported to 10000000 different platforms, and actually becomes a good piece of software, then I really don't give a rats ass if it's the #1 browser, just as long as it deserves to be that way. I still use netscape & mozilla, and I'll probably keep it that way no matter how many platforms M$ ports their, software to.

I always use pinball to fill thre break between classes up at WVU. It's great. I mean, you can win free games if you are good enough. I can either shell out $X on video games, that even when I beat them, I have to pay again to play again, or I can pay my $.50, play pinball, and sit in the arcade and flirt with for hours for the same price, based on the games I won. It impresseses other people when you win free games too:-)
Microwaves are line of sight. This is mentioned in the document that provides the actual plans to build this device, which is linked to the website that this article is about. For boat cruising, I would recommend RF. You might also try a more powerful transmitter, so that you can go farther out. You will, however, need to get several ham radio licenses before you are allowed to legally construct such a device.
I love projects like this. This would have been great last spring when my best friend and I lived a couple of miles apart. Maybe I can steal internet from the dorms like this;-) This reminds me of one of my favorite books The Robot Builder's Bonanza. I think that I'll pick up some parts tonight after work.
Our government operates on an excess budget. They don't care where the tax $$$ come from. Our political system is a good one, but by its nature, the politicians have to cater to the voters. The money will NOT go to anything worthwhile. It will go to whatever interest group has the most $$$. Quite personally, I don't quite care for our government taking money out of my pocket, and giving it to some obscure faction, that exists exclusively for the reason of sucking up government money. For all I know, my tax dollars are going into the pocket of someone who makes 10X as much as I do, simply because they fall into some group of people who are supposedly underpriveledge. It's probably hidden in the back of a bill somewhere, most spending is.
Taxes come from the people buddy. When the government funds something, it's being paid for with MY MONEY. Who am I paying back by being taxed? You think that CERN is going to get the $$$?
I personally think that the US taxes too much already. There are politicians calling tax cuts "wasting government money." Now that Europe has done it, the US will see the green light on putting taxes on the net. This is the last thing that we actually NEED, since the government has plenty of money already. Perhaps they should take care of the deficit a bit or something.
What I really hate is the cheap shirts, that people are willing to spend $$$ on, just because they have a logo or brand name on them. Tommy Hilfiger is the worst of them. Some American Eagle products fall under this catagory too (I buy some of their products, but the ones that I like, which is NOT the ones that are just t-shirts with a logo on them)
You know, the internet wasn't bothering anyone. We were all online and happy. It was easy for people to start a business, share info, whatever. What happens now?
First, how will it deal with shaking? Hopefully, well.
Second, will you have to finish the CD and nullify the oportunity to write more data to it in order to get the pictures off?
Third, will it be generic CD-R's, or it gonna be a "memory stick" at the last minute, totally proprietary, and useless in anything buy a sony product.

And then I crack the bot, and get in anyways, lovely thought, sounds like something that's been done before.
To have a wetwire! I wanna be the first kid on my block to be wired to my car...
Also, Aibo could be a lot more interesting...
