  1. Re:Depends on your cable carrier on Can Cable Really Be Slower Than 56K? · · Score: 1

The solution to this is easy: have cable and DSL! That may not apply to some people, but I could get that for 90$ (CDN) a month (of course i'd need a little extra routing equipment but I already have a small LAN... nothing a linux router with 3 eth cards couldn't handle :)). Although I have a friend who's tried the local cable and DSL providers and the cable was never as fast or as reliable as the DSL (which, btw, is down about 3 hours a year here). My DSL is also faster than I hear from a lot of people - 1.4Mbps down and 384Kbps up. With the current quality, it would take a lot more speed for me to switch to cable... and even then I'm not always downloading huge files. With a good server I can download a CD in 30-45 minutes, and that's good enough.

Here's what the author thinks about the internet, and the real point of the story: "Morris Bart was a tiny widget inside the same magnificent American instrument of destruction that the Internet has so eloquently upgraded." After talking about how adults fear rapid change, he proves it. Just another fool. He can insult Americans as much as he wants, but he's really attacking the Internet. But the real funny thing is this: in one part of the long article (90% of which is just introducing the subject), the author says that people who accept good advice from anyone will have an advantage. And then he says it's wrong for a 15 year old to give out legal advice. According to his information, "By July 1, Marcus was ranked No. 10 out of 150 or so experts in AskMe.com's criminal-law division, many of whom were actual lawyers.".

I think the link to the other slashdot story, the one everyone follows first, is confusing everyone. This is not about removing useful information from the boot process!! Linus was just saying that we don't need to be told the version and authors of every module and driver every time we start our computers. AFAIK, he is for useful messages at boot time, he just doesn't want the boot process to look like a movie with the credits at the start.

And for all you people who want this to be optional - if it is done (and I hope it is), it will be fully optional. If you're one of the 0.0000000001% of people who actually need to know this, you can always find the version information and credits for any driver. That's all Linus wants to remove from the boot messages, and I hope he gains support on this, because I want to use my computer, not read the full credits for the kernel 5 times a day.

note: I do not currently use linux, but I plan to install the Mandrake Powerpack I recently bought as soon as I get my new computer running. This may cause a few innacuracies in my post, but I belive that I know enough (and I do have some linux experience) to correct the mistaken ideas too many people seem to have gotten from this story

This isn't about the same thing as the slashdot story linked from it. This is about not telling you you're using HardwareDriver 1.34.135 by Abjkl Magdinadf. That is exactly the kind of thing we don't need - if I want to know the name of the person who wrote my drivers, i'll find the information myself. I don't need to be told every time I start my computer. This is optional - the messages like this should be removed from the boot process, and if you want to know you can just get the version information.

It depends. If you want to send the data over a network, render it, and have it come back, forget it. A LAN may not have noticable lag for multiplayer, but it's not enough to replace the system bus. If you were thinking of the data being re-broadcast over the network for observers or having a fixed scene rendered (or anything where the program controling the rendering and the rendering hardware are on the same computer), it would be possible.
