This, and an earlier story about welding a mac to a 21" monitor made me think. I wonder if anyones put a Mac into an Amiga case. How about an IBM PCII case Okay, what about a briefcase - A portable iMac but much more stylish than the official portables.
Okay, maybe I should have been ultra specific. I meant nobody in this thread is calling black people apes
The film was not calling black people apes, as you seem to have stated. People pointed out that you were missing the point by pointing to evidence that the film was calling the ruling classes apes, and not black people. You responded as though it was defending the allegation. It was not. It was denying it outright, and providing evidence to back it up. I pointed out your mistake. You responded by repeating your origional allegation.
Can I also point out that you are a hippocrite. You claim to dislike people stereotyping according to race. You then accuse Computer geeks of being racist. Do you mean to say that race prejudice is wrong, but other forms of prejudice are okay?
I think the point of everyone was that (at least in the first two films) they weren't calling black people apes. At the very worst they were calling black people humans, and white people apes. And even if you do make that interpretation then you're missing the point.
The film was intended to mirror society. Amongst other things, the way those in power are frightened by changes to the status quo, and are willing to cover up the truth.
Just what is the relationship to the Apes and black people? Did the apes exibit any stereotypical "black" behaviour? Were they being persecuted by the ruling class?
Nobody's calling Black people Apes. If you look at the post that you were responding to, you'll see that the miliatary are being called gorillas, Polititians are being called orangutangs, and Scientists are being called chimps. And I don't object to being called a chimp either.
Escape wasn't too bad. I'd call it dated at worst. Its just the 70's costumes and cars that make it look old. Conquest has the problem of being set in 1991. I seem to have missed the plague that wiped out all the cats and dogs in the world 9 years ago. Apart from that, it doesn't look too bad.
Yes, I know it was signposted throughout the entire film. It was still meant to be a surprise. And I don't think anyone was actually expecting to see the Statue of Liberty even if they HAD worked out that it was Earth.
The reason I suggested reverse engineering is because of the GPL. If you were obliged to supply source code, then there is a greater possibility of the "It could be used for piracy" argument to stop it.
No, they think Pepsi, or someone else, would brew the same stuff, sell it at half the price and kill their profit margins.
But they wouldn't. If Pepsi tried it, then they'd find that Coke was still more popular, and if they undercut their price, they'd be undercutting their own price too.
If anyone else tried it they still couldn't make a dent in Coke's sales. Most colas taste pretty much the same anyway. People just go for Coke because they can trust the brand name.
And your VCR+ allows it to record the right show even if they change the time the show is broadcast? Yep. Mine does. A while ago it took me a week to realise I set the clock 12 hours out. And that videos 6 years old now.
Your other points are perfectly valid of course. I particularly liked the idea of the machine being able to guess what you like, and there should be better access times than on a tape as well. Best of all, ypou can simulate VHS quality by putti9ng clingfilm over the screen
Compare the commercial revenues of Fox, NBC, CBC et al with Comedy Central.
But a budget doesn't always hurt. (There are exceptions. I think South Park would have suffered if it had a big budget when it started) Compare any US science fiction with just about any Science fiction based series made by the BBC. It ruins the effect quite a lot when you can see the walls wobbling.
Thankgod for the BBC, lots of top programs with no adverts.
Top programs!? What like the National Lottery live, and Crime Traveller!? (Sorry, don't take me too seriously with that rant.)
I like the comment that its "only" 24th. As though being only the 24th richest person alive, or only having the worlds 24th fastest car would also be something to be sneezed at.
Anyway, is there a list of world supercomputer rankings?
A lot of real high end gear does not have a treble and bass control.
Sorry, I was talking about how the levels were set when the CD was recorded. It was the fault of the record companies, not the buyers. The fact that you can't actually adjust these on decent equipment meant that they could sound better on cheaper equipment.
Regional coding allows the movie companies to enforce price fixing. Is this legal? Could we get a ban on region coding in Europe and/or Australia? (Apparently there already is one in New Zealand). I should think that a lot of the Electrical comapnies and retailers would back this. The UK's biggest supermarket ceratainly would.
Can you buy this player in the UK? If not is there another one that can play mp3? I just like the idea of being able to play my MP3 collection without having to wait for my computer to start.
There isn't really a lot of difference between PAL and NTSC DVD's. NTSC DVD's are often recorded at 24(ish) frames per second because thats the same speed as 35 mm film. The DVD player converts it to NTSC speed. I think they use different YUV colour separations from NTSC as well. (mainly because NTSC colour separations really suck)
Why not reverse engineer DeCSS (outside the US)? That doesn't have any licence agreement preventing this, and the source code is supplied.
Using this code, produce a DVD player that is very strict about the technologies that actually ARE used to prevent copying (e.g. Macrovision), and not about those that are about control (e.g. regional coding, unauthorised playback, preventing fast forward). The point is that anyone who tried to ban this would find that it couldn't be used to copy discs, so they wouldn't be able to use the piracy angle to try to ban it.
The DeCSS hack is blamed for the delay in DVD audio. This must be costing the industry millions! Are they trying to tell us that they are willing to sell NO discs at all in case they lose a sale to piracy?
Actually it reminds me of the type of school teacher who would punish the whole class because a single person was misbehaving, and blaming it on the naughty child. (A tactic that still results in the kids laying the blame solely on the teacher).
Well, to answetr your question, DVD audio gives 24 bits at 96khz (I think these were the figures anyway). This is largely to please the obsessive audiophiles who think that CD isn't as good quality as vinyl.
This sounds like its just a gimmick aimed at the people who polish their electrical plugs, since a lot of music fans now agree that CD quality has improved since they got to grips with setting the bass and treble levels for CD rather than vinyl
And yes, there really are people who think that you get better sound if the plug at the wall gets better connecion.
I keep hearing people say how nice it is to program on an ARM. I've never tried. What was so nice about it? And did you still feel it was nice after finding that you had to do a divide (or was there a macro for this?)

I wish Hollywood would figure out that sex is not the only way to create tension between characters.
And also that you don't need a car chase to provide action.

And stop putting words into other peoples mouths.
Okay, so it went downhill with the later films.
Escape wasn't too bad. I'd call it dated at worst. Its just the 70's costumes and cars that make it look old.

If its a straight remake then this is totally pointless. The origional series of films has aged remarkable well.
I want them to base it on one of the earlier concepts that had an advanced Ape race, with cities and skyscrapers.
The other problem is that it has one of the most famous surprise endings ever.
The reason I suggested reverse engineering is because of the GPL. If you were obliged to supply source code, then there is a greater possibility of the "It could be used for piracy" argument to stop it.

it will only rank 24th on the list of the top 500

Isn't region 0 just a name for regions disabled though rather than an actual region? Or is it that all players play their own region and region 0?
I can see the added benefit of Betamax for in flight movies is that the picture quality is better than VHS (allegedly).
A lot of real high end gear does not have a treble and bass control.

International waters? ... The Illuminati?
Essentially, yes
7 is reserved.
8 is airlines.
(I think I got those the right way round)

To summarise.... PAL discs will work fine.
This is exactly the reason that Coca-Cola is so protective of its "Coke" trademark. If you don't protect a tradmark you can lose control of it.
Remember that the word "Coke" is probably their most valuable assett. They can't let other companies make a product called Coke.

Well, I was thinking a Crusoe would be better (although those are still pretty speedy).
I'm Not quite sure what to do with the graphics chip, but there must be some things that the CPU still does that could be moved onto custom chips.
Oups, I almost forgot to say that Amiga was a she computer ;-) The only female computer in the world.
Yeah, I bet you gave it a name too. Come on. Own up. what was it?
