Hey, I sawa n Apple ][ in a charity shop a while back. I would have bought it if I had somewhere to put it. It even had a couple of full height disk drives.
Hah! If you read the popular newspapers then you would know that anything that is connected to a computer will automatically be connected to the internet. Its the only way to prevent the y2k bug from destroyinh humanity.

I think that perhaps you Brits are going too far with the extra 'u's these days..
What this means to me, is that he is saying he wants the entertainment industry to do what he thinks is right. His definition of better citizen, not mine or someone elses.
Of course he does. I want them to do what I think is right. As long as he's aware that other people might have a different opinion which they might express, and he limits himself to trying to persuade them that his view of right and wrong is a good one rather than trying to force his opinions on them then he's entitled to the same freedom of speech that they are.
You don't have to excersize your right to freedom of speech. I don't tell ugly people they're ugly even if I have the legal right. I just wouldn't think it was right to say it. If someone else did this then I'd ask them to stop being so offensive. Thats all he's doing. Asking them to be more responsible.
Okay, so my electronics knowledge isn't up to scratch. I just know that a friend of mine has managed to connect a UK video recorder to a cheap German TV via RF, and it seemed to work.
Its not a major difference. Its just a minor hack to make it backwardly compatible with previous standards. A lot of equipment works with no modifications.
simple, look for the audio signal to jump by 3db and you know that a commercial is starting. (Please note tongue planted in cheek here)
Not too far from the truth though. Shouldn't be to hard to detect advertising from audio characteristics. Of course if they don't want you to do this they'll leave the volume level alone.
"Just because I give you the Cat scanner, it does not immediately give you the right to go into business against me with my own technology," Davis said.
Um...Mr. Davis... everyone already had the right to go into business against you. The fact that you gave them the means to do it doesn't mean you gain any rights or your compeitors lose any.
Do any business methods require a lot of work and development to set up? No. Its just an idea. If someone else sees that the idea is succesful the amount of work involved will be the same as the person who came up with it first. The time taken will also be the same. In this time it will give the person who came up with it first a competitive advantage.
Its not like patents are needed to encourage business processes either. People will implement them whther they're protected or not.
Give a better competition. Something with an adequate prize, and the only obligation to win it being disclosure of the hack, rather than full surrender of all rights.
I'm aware of the splitting of the water molecule to get H2, but from what I remember, it's difficult to get any reliable amounts out without a significant energy input.
Yup. Best possible amount of energy out of a hydrogen/oxygen reaction is the same as the amount of energy required to seperate the hydrogen from water in the first place. You would get better energy efficiency from gas and most hydrocarbons, but these are a lot more expensive than water.
Also, dealing specifically with the explosiveness of hydrogen, could it be more harmful than current hydrocarbons
Hard to say. According to this article you can use hydrocarbons as your fuel source if they prove to be safer. (I'm not sure how dangerous it is compared with natural gas which is quite popular in some areas as a commercial vehicle fuel)
Because in Star Trek, the techies are all considered heroes.
No, the truth is, that nobody claims that Star Trek is real. We know warp drive is as as feasable as the infinite improbability drive, but it doesn't matter. Given a choice between realism and a story, I'll go with a story and apply the appropriate technobabble filters to all the tech.
Of course it all gets a bit silly from time to time. Especially when we get those daft temporal and spacial anomolies, and I tend to get irritated when they try to extrapolate real physics into Star Trek physics (tachyons pushing you past the speed of light? puleeze!) But its just a TV show.
Although Bill Gates is more of a name of the 80's and could have been left off on those grounds.
(Along with Larry Ellison and Steve Jobs and Vinod Khosla)
Tim probably is an important name at least as
far as consumer tech goes. Linus I'm not so sure about.
An equivilent of Linux probably would have
happened without him. (GNU Hurd perhaps)
Its not too hard really with sports. Odds are
based on the estimated number of bets as well as
the probability of winning. Some popular horses throw these figures totaly out of whack, and team sports are even more skewed.
I guess you still have the option of not using and not having a digital signature. That will make you no less well off. If you choose to take the risk then you have an easy way of signing.
Gambling is apparently very uncommon amongst geeks. Someone told me that when there are technology shows in Vegas, the hotel prices go up because of this.
Wasn't the first one stolen by the Polish? Or plans for it or something. Damn. My history needs brushing up.

I'm not sure that it was actually a law saying that they CAN snoop, rather the failure of a law to say that they can't. (I might be wrong here)

Methinks you are being too subtle for the slashdot audience.
Incidentaly, I presume that you are aware that the double bar at the beginning middle and end of barcodes is the same as the barcode for a 6.
Ah well. DC needs someone on their side. Might as well be their business partners since everyone else seems to think its a stupid business model.

I wonder how many people are going to have to learn about MAKEDEV now.
Ah. Perhaps I should have put a warning there. I guess this makes my post indirectly educational:)
Is it non-obvious?
Depends what its a solution to. If one-click shopping is a there to avoid having to go to the nearest bookshop, then it is most certainly not obvious.
If it is a solution to having to click twice then I don't think it is, but (depending on how the patent is written, and the implementation)

it can be done in beos too,
/dev/audio /dev/audio pir8.raw
Remarkable easily since BeOS allows drivers to use standard open() write() and close() operations
I am not too much of a linux hacker, I know its possible there too. What's the easiest way?
rm -f
ln -s
(Its not a good way and probably not a very reliable way but it will probably work to an extent)
I'm sure the Audio Home Recording Act says something about hardware having to be honest about the copyright information.
This could be construed as a a breach of that if the hardware insists that a public domain track isn't public domain.

Winning is just a matter of statistical analysis.

This was mentioned before. There's a way of listing all users in numerical order. I think someone discovered that the account had been deleted.
