They are totally in ass saving mode right now. If they don't get this thrown out, it makes the U.S. government complicit in illegal wire tapping, although it would be interesting to see how it plays out since the Obama administration didn't create the wiretaps. Who would they prosecute? Is there a lawyer in the house?
Actually you can, but it's a total pain in the ass. You partition your drive with two partitions. One for the XP install and another partition for your Vista install. Install XP on the second (D:) partition. Install Vista (choosing a custom install and the empty C: partition). I've done it many times.
Pain in the ass though. You really pay for that extra $100 convenience reduction in cost for the upgrade package.
Then why is it that my upgrade edition of Vista Ultimate requires me to have XP installed on my hard drive before it will install? It also will not let me install on the same partition as XP. It forces me to do a clean install (not a bad thing in my book). This is first hand experience with my personal copy.
It no longer does the little scan of your previous media to verify your upgrading. It requires a full install on your hard drive.
Yes, but aren't there systems available where they can use simple Cell systems? My alarm system uses a cell phone instead of a land line. You would think the hardware for such a setup would be reasonably cheap and allow for decent speed for any telecommuting work needed. They could use certificates as well as passwords for authentication. This just seems insane to me.
Hell, even a dial-up modem/cell system would be more secure and 'off the grid'. Why in the world would they want to put a permanent link to these onto the internet where people can randomly poke holes in the security?
It's more likely they denied the FOI request simply because the general public would be outraged at potential loss of civil rights should this treaty be signed.
This is scary stuff, although it seems mostly conjecture at this point. Frightening to think that they gave the recording and movie industry access and even consulted with them according to rumor, while leaving civil rights groups out in the cold.
I'd suggest folks start calling their local papers and news channels asking why they aren't bringing this issue into public awareness. I just did the same with my local news and MSNBC.
Seems that since they've been bailed out they are no longer allowed to do any research (even if it turns out badly?).
You can't have it both ways. They are either a stagnant company with nothing innovative, or they will be spending capitol on R&R.
I don't think this is a horrible idea, although I am curious why they didn't just go with a three or 4 wheeled vehicle. I can only guess that most of the development and tech was Segway's while GM will be providing the manufacturing capacity and automation, and their distribution network if things go well.
Agreed. 80% of the population drinks caffeine. This sounds like something a news channel would do to try to drum up some drama on a slow news day.
ANY substance, if it's abused, can have adverse affects and caffeine is no different.
This is not high on my list of concerns. Even a nephrologist told me it's not something to worry about unless it causes you specific health issues (for instance someone with stomach ulcers would probably want to limit caffeine as it increases acid production and it raises the temperature of the stomach 10-15 degrees).
The above reads like some bad 'Mary Jane' move from the 60's. Reefer Madness anyone?
"Could it be SafeNet, with important US government connections and contracts, could no longer afford to be even loosely associated with a company which apart from anything else, stands every chance of being prosecuted across America for practising illegally as a private investigator?"
It also doesn't seem to imply that Google owns the copyright to these books either does it? IANAL, but aren't they implying that this specific collection will be Google's, but not the specific books?
I think the idea of copyrighting a 'collection' of other copyrighted works is downright stupid, but hey...
I recall reading about this online a few years ago. Hopefully someone can find the article. It theorized that an object falling into a black hole would actually be traveling faster than the speed of light. Although local time to the object they would not break any rules, assuming they were traveling at the speed of light or very close to it as they fell into the event horizon, from the outside observer, they are actually moving on compressed space-time and the space time itself is actually being pulled in a circular motion by the black hole and therefore allows them to travel faster than the speed of light as observed by by someone outside of the warped space-time.
Kind of like water down a drain. The water by the drain is moving much faster than the surrounding water and although no laws are broken, they could in theory end up moving faster than light on the locally warped space-time as seen by an outside observer.
I'm speaking specifically about the main websites for the big distros like Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, etc. I've always wondered why they didn't put a link for donations directly on the main pages.
I always wondered why they don't use PayPal donation type setups on the major release websites. You know the type. "Contribute if you enjoy the softare, blah blah blah".
Yeah. They tend to forget that not everyone knows what to do with a source file.;)
I sometimes wonder if the multitude of choices for things like desktop environment don't exacerbate the situation. Don't like it? Then go away and use something else. Seems like sometimes they just assume that it's easier to push you somewhere else rather than to address it in their own build.
I wouldn't necessarily say it has a lack of critics. I think it is more pointed to the Linux communities response to said criticism. They tend to be very dismissive, defensive, and unresponsive to any criticism whether it's deserved or not.
From TFA:
"Most of the time the world of Linux tends to be anti-critical. If anybody in the community dares be critical, they get stomped upon."
I agree. I get zero spam and have been that way for years. I have a throw away account that I never use (hotmail), and my primary. I actually do give out my primary depending on what I'm signing up for but I actually do read the privacy policies and research the site.
I also have to assume that my primary e-mail accounts do their own filtering. Spam for me has been a non-issue for 3-4 years.
I would definitely have to disagree there. I own two different Vaio models. The sounds sucks on both. Sounds like a tin can through a string on those two. Dunno why but it's a horrible design. My MB Pro on the other sounds much better with a nice bass response that is totally lacking on the Sony's.
On my VAIO's, both have USB ports that are failing and they are less than 2 years old. One of them has only a single working port left out of 4. Other than that, they are capable machines except that Sony refuses to turn on the Virtualization in the CPU (disabled in bios without an easy way to turn it on). The VAIO's also lacked decent sized 7200 RPM drives when I bought them.
My HP laptop was decent but the construction/case was shoddy. Sound was good but the laptop had bad pixels on the lcd display but apparently not enough to return it. The case also cracked by the hinges and the top clam shell cover within a year and the display would randomly blank out at times. It finally quit booting at all in it's second year.
As for this debate, it's very subjective. I took the plunge and bought my first Mac after the whole Vista fiasco. I will never go back to Windows. I run no spyware or virus scan on my new Mac. Idle it hits 0-1% utilization. It boots in less than seconds to idle, and everything just works. When I had to call to find out why my initial order was delayed I was given an native English speaking support person who promptly refunded $400 dollars off the purchase price and refunded my next day shipping charges without any prompting from me, all while apologizing profusely for the delay.
I don't need DVD software, developer/compiling tools, complete movie editing tools, a photo editing suite, a disk partition tool that allows resizing of partitions on the fly (no reboots), a screen grabber, extremely easy backup/restore that even my father could do (trust me, my father still confuses the monitor for the PC itself), and X11 built in, Unix security, etc.
It's a laptop. I will probably never upgrade the hard drive or the ram (got it with 4 GB of which I typically use about 1). I could but I doubt I will find any need. Satisfaction is very subjective to each person, but I consider myself very satisfied. So much so that when my HP laptop died, I bought an iMac 24" 3.06 GHz/4GB Ram and built in Wireless Draft-N. Even faster than my MB Pro, with a beautiful 24" display, and of course zero problems;)
Hate it all you want. It's an excellent piece of design and it was even cheaper than the MB Pro.
I've never understood why they just don't offer a 'simple' and an 'advanced' user control panel rather than all this bruhaha about KDE and Gnome. I prefer my desktop to work. I'm not interested in shiny icons, or whatnot. I was a KDE fan until 4.0. I've since switched to Gnome. I find it serves my purposes.
Honestly I think people put far to much discussion into the G vs K thing. It's not like it's hard to drop both on there now. Why don't they just merge and go with the Simple vs Advanced option and be done with it?
Maybe if we're lucky it would bring about an end to all the stupid app names like kChat (is that a sneeze), or gfloppy (did I just throw up a little in my mouth?). I can't stand that everyone tries to throw a damn K or G in front of every app for those desktops.
There is some humor I could do without. This doesn't even rank as that. This was plain distateful (hence the flamebait rating you received). Obviously not funny to most here. Checking the score it appears that no one found it funny. Perhaps you should evaluate your career choices in comedy.
So you would then be willing to have sex with a person off the opposite sex who is HIV positive? Since you think it is a 'gay' disease, then you are not at risk of infection?
Most folks who don't have a vested emotional interest in a religion are not likely to respond as strongly. I for instance don't have much use for religion, but I'm not actively working with some.ORG group to get all religion banned.
I agree on principal though. As I said, it does cut both ways, however, if religion was kept more private, within the church, and not so involved in politics, I think the world in general would be much more friendly place.

A recent Slashdot study found that 10 out of 10 prefer the 'Elite' SciFi as opposed to the 0 out of 10 who prefer the 'crap' ScyPhy...
I for one welcome our new Deaf Dolphin Overloards..

Some topics are not humorous to those that are dying. A little taste, common sense, and discretion are probably in order.
