    The thing is written in Ruby, with MVC. You can start putting shingles before digging the basement, meanwhile decorating the second and third floor, putting walls on the second. And that being disciplined. If you are in to hacks, let's just say I'm out of acid.

    Have you considered ZFS, I believe the RAID 5 write hole is an issue here, which ZFS might be able to fix.

    Or use tab mix plus and other tab management extensions, and start wishing about using FF as your system shell. I believe that is technically feasible.

    Sounds like a tiling window manager with expose support and an overgrown taskbar/launcher (main menu). Not dissing it, sounds great. (Oh, and, don't bring multitouch into this, UNIX has long solved the problem of the powerless mouse, it's called three buttons and four modifier keys.)
