to my knowledge watermarks in sounds files works by making some places of the sound slightly different such that the ear/brain will not think that sounds wrong, but also such that a reencoding will not trash the watermark.

I believe that the music industry are capable of spending a lot of money on developing a sufficient good watermark technology, also one that will survive multiple reencoding attempts.

Also, suppose that they give each buyer a sufficiently unique number, and then they put this number into alot of sound files all encoded differently. Suppose you try to trash the watermark. That might succed for some parts of the watermark, but since you most likely share all your music, then enough data might have survived for them being able to stick all the watermark parts together from all the files and making it say "digitig"

there might be other reasons for why the files differs.

Suppose that you have multiple watermarks, some are identical from files to files, some specify the server they comes from, others the buyer, and some the music company?

And finally, not being a watermark expert... there might exist water mark technology that can survive such behaviour.

Still, if it was you who bought the file, i would very much dare you to prove that even after you did what you describe that after that, there are NO watermarks left.

  6. Re:Won't help on Watermarking to Replace DRM? · · Score: 4, Interesting

i think the hole point of watermarking is that you can not detect it, meaning you can not remove it by rewritting it. And neither by converting to analog and recording it again.

Should you succed in detecting one watermark, who says that they have not many watermarks in the sound? Can you prove that you have removed ALL watermarks from a file?

A sound file might be small enough for just having a few watermarks, but a movie should be big enough for each file to have several watermarks in it. Happy sharing.

No i am not a spammer, but i have been burned by DNSBL more than once.

I have tried to send legit email to someone i had sent to before. But just because the local ISP that i sent through was in a DNSBL then i could not get my email through and i had to wait days before i could continue the emailing. That was annoying. Other times one of my customers called and complained because one of their customers ISP was in a DNSBL.

I didnt particular setup the usage of DNSBL, i just used default postfix configuration for Debian. I still had to turn it off.

So i dont like this black or white usage of a DNSBL, i prefer the scoring system of a system like spamassassin and looking at previous history of email partners to whitelist email address and possibly domains.

I also tried looking at all my attachment spam and see if i can work out a general rule. It seems to me that noone sends email to me with an attachment upfront, they sent text emails first. Later they might send attachments.

  9. Re:NEVER use a DNSBL as an absolute block on Choosing a Good DNSBL · · Score: 1

I already wrote in my original statement that i would allow .vcf files. The small logo's might become a problem because alot of spammers also send small .jpg's, but then you could look at the rest of the email, the headers, lookup the MX records for the domain, ask if the MX servers wants to accept email to the sender, and possibly check if there is a website for the domain. But ... maybe companies should try to avoid sending the same kind of attachments that spammers does to distinguish themselves from spammers.

  10. Re:NEVER use a DNSBL as an absolute block on Choosing a Good DNSBL · · Score: 1

and if this blocking of attachments forces spammers to send small text emails first and then send the .pdf or .jpg attachment 5 minutes later, you could further require that you have reply to this or other messages comming from the same email address or the same domain (carefull with hotmail). Hopefully this approach could render attachment spam more useless.

how many of your 20,000,000 blocked emails are false positives? aka legit email.

I would so much agree that using a DNSBL as a absolute block is a bad idea. I have experienced being caught up in them, and that is annoying. Even if the mailserver is removed some days later. Later is not soon enough, i want my email to arrive now.

I would much rather suggest running some sort of spamassassin while the SMTP connection is still open, and if it looks like spam i would reject it. This can be parallized if needed.

I would also consider to reject any email that came with an attachment if you have not already received legit email from the same address. This tries to use that spammers seldom send from the same email address and that they started sending attachments. Legit email does not usually start with an attachment in the first email (at least mine does not). So, if you previously received emails and that email address has a negative spam score, aka not being a spammer, then i would accept attachments, else i would not.

This might be pr. domain, but hotmail and others are often used by spammers. This could lead to a domain spamscore, aka if you received emails before from this domain and none was spam, then accept attachments, even if it is the first time someone sends you something from the domain. This is for company uses where John sends you something and then later Jane sends you something with an attachment.

You might want to allow certain kinds of attachments even if they are not listed before. These attachments could be .vcf files, and possible .html, but not .pdf or .jpg

If you dont want to use earplugs get a real hearing protector, they can be had without, with a speaker inside and with speakers and a microphone for talking to others.

Dont damage your ears for appealing looks (you wont pickup or get laid inside the server room anyway).

I do have an old pair of noise canceling earphones, and they do "mute" some sounds, but others are raised, voices go more clearly through, or so i percieve it, but that might be because the background sounds are not percieved by my brain.

No, they are surely not priced at what people want to pay. Arround me concerts with big names are always sold out within 3-12 minutes. This means that only those that stand in line a long time, for days in advance gets a ticket. This is wrong, therefore i suggest the following solution:

    1. set the initial price at some high price that noone wants to pay. Googol or Googolplex seems obvious choices.
    2. Decrease price regularly until all available tickets are sold.

This maximises the ammount of money the artist gets paied (or the concert manager if the artist is not smart enough). The current system lets disonest people with lots of time buy alot of available tickets and resell them for a higher price. My suggestion would make the artist gain those money the reseller earns, since the fans would buy tickets at the price the it is worth to that fan.
Sure it is an unfair system that gives rich people an advantage, but thats just life. But right now rich people can pay someone to stand in line.

Otterbox made something that can protect your device, i use that when i ride my horse.

I go 3-5 days on my treo650, depending on how much i call. But one thing that REALLY bugs me, is that i can not use SSH while i am talking to a client. This is really annoying. Activating SSH drops the call. This is bad, so have this in mind. I dont know if other phones does this. Maybe other SSH applications does not have this problem.

If you can carry a small bag, get a real small laptop with a 8" or 10" display. Maybe a widescreen, because then it is not so big on one side, and may more easily fit a pocket in a jacket.
