"Wiping out most species on the planet has to qualify as an evolutionary step backwards."

Evolution doesn't take steps backwards. It just takes steps.

And all the genetic mutations caused as a result of nuclear fallout might cause it to step faster.

As soon as it is disproved/adjusted/strenghtened due to new findings.

    Book of Mormon?

Jesus was actually a Cylon, and God is a supercomputer. That's a new finding that should satisfy any creationist---it strictly adheres to the "pulled it out of my ass" standard of peer-review.

A problem I encountered in 64-bit Ubuntu was that, other than the mouse, X froze up entirely and had to be restarted. No response to any clicking or keypresses anywhere. This happened randomly when loading web pages that used Flash. Even in 32-bit, I occasionally find myself having to kill -9 firefox. So it's not always that easy.

Wasn't really offering an opinion on cigarette/alcohol taxes. I guess it's natural to assume everyone on Slashdot is a libertarian, so I forgive you.

I just really hate text messages.

That is incorrect. The Fair Use doctrine (in the United States, at least) does in fact explicitly consider the commercial use and impact of derivative works.

Don't take my word for it---look at the lawbooks.,

Nonsense. We need to slap a "vice tax" on text messages, like we do on cigarettes and alcohol, to discourage their use. At $20 a text, perhaps the world will finally be free of this insidious evil.

I know, Scientologists are so effing crazy.

Everyone knows that men were made from dirt and women were made from a rib. There is such a thing as talking magic snakes, and immortal dudes with wings and flaming swords. Human suffering was caused by eating a bad apple. There's a mystical man in the sky, with a beard, who gives advice and grants wishes.

    I could go on.

Scientology the religion (as opposed to the church organization, which may have its own problems) gets the level of animosity it does not because it's completely ridiculous, but merely because it's completely ridiculous in a way that we're not already used to.

  8. Re:frikken hilarious on Nerd Baby · · Score: 1

Maybe you're thinking Second Edition? I know I always do. In Third Edition, the AC starts at 10 and is modified upward---a higher armor class equals a higher chance to avoid damage. (Which removes the need for good ol' THAC0.) According to the d20 rules, a human wearing zero armor (like, say, a t-shirt) with a Dexterity of 3 gets a -4 penalty to their Armor Class. So the AC of 6 is correct.

Gah, I hate getting roped into bickering on the Internet (which is different from arguing), but that just irritated me so much I have to respond before someone Godwins this thread.

"A country should be able to make decisions about what ideas it tolerates within its borders."

If you take the liberal constitutional approach, the one with all the founding fathers and such, no, absolutely not. If you take the ancient Athenian view, the one that killed Socrates, then yes, but only under a democratic government. Since the Chinese government is not democratically elected or accountable to "the people," you're conflating the "country" with the "people in power." That's okay, I guess, as long as you have some rationale for determining the legitimacy of the Chinese regime. Is that justification simply that the people in power have a right to speak for the country simply because they were able to pull themselves up to the top---e.g., might makes right? As far as I know that particular sophistry was debunked thousands of years ago (again, see Socrates). Is there some sort of divine authority that legitimizes the CCP's authority---doubtful, since they're atheistic. Capitalism has taken hold with a vengeance in China, so I guess Marxism's out the door. So what's the source of the Chinese government's "right" to do anything?

"There's no scientific proof that our way is the universal right!"

That might be because ethics does not pose any scientific questions. But maybe you're right; as long as there's one guy out there who doesn't agree with us, we should all abandon our principles for fear of offending his sensibilities.

    Okay, that was horrible.
