People don't realize that the government can only appropriate funds from one party to another. If we were to tax universities for music, we would indeed see a decrease in wealth of university attendees (and believe me, I'm one of them -- we don't have much wealth to begin with). Surely, a music tax would only further disable this demographic from buying merchandise and going to concerts - what the musicians actually make their money on.
Once again, the record labels are trying to lucratively profit while making us believe that we're supporting the artist.
And that doesn't even include the money the universities would have to spend to keep up with those ridiculous regulations and restrictions. And THAT would be a money hog.
You raise an interesting point. I am a developer for a very popular (albeit, niche) open source application used by electronic musicians. It used to be sold for a very expensive fee, but it was forced to switch to GPL - in part because of the popularity of competing open source programs, and also due to the significant improvement in quality this move achieved.
The only way this project could have been capitalized on was through service. Open source applications, if used by a multitude of people like in both our situations, are typically much more stable and innovative than any commercial competitors; friendly, fast, helpful, and dependable service that the customer comes to rely upon is the way to prevent open source from being that "race to zero."
See Redhat and SuSE for examples. Don't look toward Sun... the Solaris 10 platform only still survives because of Sun's reputation as a stellar sever/workstation manufacturer.
I would hardly even call the Bushes, Limbaughs, or O'Reilleys conservative.
What about them is conservative? Perhaps all that stuff they say about tax cuts for the wealthy while still maintaining the welfare state? Maybe it's that interventionalist foreign policy that doesn't support the constitutional requirement to declare war before entering into one? No... it must be all that stuff about wanting to establish governmental bodies that not only succeed constitutional powers, but also don't even get the CONSENT of the constitution to create them in the first place. Or maybe it's their support of the federal reserve system, and the absolute hell it has caused this entire country?
Gee - they seem more like socialists to me than conservatives. What kind of conservative ignores the constitution and breaks the law to further an insane neo-con conspiracy?
The other thing that we need to understand here is that it's not just the so-called "conservatives" that support these actions. The so-called "liberal" Democrats are just as responsible for these problems as the "conservative" Republicans are. In fact, since the Democrats took power in 2006, they've been absolutely ineffective at reverting any of the policies that they claimed to be so against when they were the minority party.
The lesson to be learned here is that both of these major parties follow the same basic principles that are destroying America. No matter if you vote for Obama or McCain; both will wreak a similarly dreadful havoc upon our civil liberties, our economy, and our way of life - just like every president has done for many decades.
If one single advertisement is hidden anywhere on the browser, then we all know that a very large population of tech-conscious users will not make the switch.

What an irresponsible use of taxpayer money.
Well, in that case, call IIS shit; Lighttpd is run by Wikipedia and YouTube, so...

So using Linux is like killing someone? =P
So, per your analogy: using Linux is like being locked up in jail? Right...
