I was just thinking that preventing Dos's is not only impossible but a way of life that we've had to learn to accept. With lack of security and common sense running wild on the internet today it seems that we have to learn to make sacrifices.
I use to pop on EFnet any time I got a chance but it seems that Dos attacks have made EFnet either unreachable or lagged to the point of disbelief.
Then we have the slashdot effect. In essence this is 'like' a dos attack millions of unique connections made to a server at the exact same time... the only way to prevent this... load balanced servers a ton of bandwidth... or you could just not tell slashdot:-).
Hypothetical situation... Rob decides that some little lamer keeps emailing him from his little ISDN box in the middle of bumsville iowa. Rob then decides to publish an article about a free downloadable opensource dvd player and makes the link point towards the box of the lamer. Now it's not Rob's fault for accidentelly typing the wrong url and you can't say it was a conspiracy... so one of the most advanced strategic dos attacks would have to be... Freedom of the press.
After getting into the C++ world I've noticed that IDE's tend to piss me off more than help me out... right now all I really would need out of an IDE would be that it could show all the sources for a project and could print out color coded to make it easier to read.
Besides that I really see no points in all the glamour of IDE's... MS Visual C++ is non-impressive to me and I really dislike using it even though I'm required to at school. I find more functionality and freedom from loading up djgpp which is what I compile on at home... and what do I use for an IDE?... yep notepad... Truly I see no reason for all these fancy IDE's except they put the tools you'd need to save time right there for you.
I don't know about you, but my take is that if you are against third party software then you're against making a standard.
Conclusions made here... AOL is full of it, they want to make sure that they aren't next on the Monopoly lawsuit list and they'll blow all kinds of smoke and whistles to make it look like they're for the community.
AOL wants to get on my side... they'll release the OSCAR protocol, not just TOC.
Okay well it seems that I'm just in the mood to begin my almighty rant. Let's take into considerationg that MAYBE, just maybe there was an operating system called Xenix and this operating system was based off of unix... more specifically system V... let's say that a company bought this operating system along with an operating system we all like to call dos... this is all hypothetical of course.
Then lets look at the first apple GUI... erll more specific the one on the Lisa... now lets compare that to a hypothetical operating system we all like to call windows 1.0.
Now let's hit the true hypothetical... instead of having to "Borrow" the code without the permission from the owner there are wonderful operating systems that are POSIX compliant and based on the look and feel of the alimighty linux along with a windowing system and window managers that were also open source.
Do you really think that this fictional company would NOT look at the code... if not infact incorperate it into it's own fancy product. The only reason you don't see MS Liunx is the fact that it would have to follow the GNU/GPL... that doesn't mean that there is not a MS version of liunx or bsd or some other POSIX compliant operating system out there... it's just not something that you will see... YET.
Mac will soon have bragging rights to the first Desktop Commercially Offered and PreLoaded onto a User Friendly computer Unix Operating system... Called... Mac OS X... this will mean that they have the right to not only place their thumbs in their ears, but also to spit out their tongues. This does not fly in the wild world of the fictional MS and it won't... my prediction... gimmie 1 year... and I bet you see a MS Unix/Linux/BSD/whatever...
I don't really get the point of graphics cards anymore... even if you buy the latest greatest $300+ card, it will be out done within 3 months. At least when you bought a processor you had 4 or 5 months before your computer ranked back in the "slow" category.
I do disagree that 3DFX and nVidia are the top competitors, ATI has been coming out with some of the best cards I've seen in a long time... and I'm not talking about the number crunching triangle drawing ability. I'm talking about functionality. the ATI All-in-wonder pro card is one of the most innovative and useful cards I've ever seen and used.
And I personally hate 3dfx because when they bought out STB... stb stopped making drivers for their cards which almost made my TNT card worthless to any new OpenGL formats... that was until nVidia released the Detonator drivers.
But when you get down to it... all this truly is... is a pissing match... AMD and Itel do it... Apple and... hehehe EVERYONE... do it... Linux and windows do it... MS and Corel do it... KDE and GNOME do it...
the.us domain name is so unpopular because as mentioned you can't register I-Like-Beans.us... you would have to register beans.bumsville.iowa.us which no one wants to remember and no one really would care about. I agree with the second level inquires like www.everyone-likes.us or www.spam.us or hell like the rest of the net now-a-days have-sex-with.us... making the domain open to things like that would make me interested.
I personally chose dugnet.com because I made it short and to the point, but because of where my server is I would of had to go through the trouble of dugnet.wherever.florida.com which is completely worthless to me.
If I could have gone with dugnet.us I definantelly would have considered it much more. All the other countries... well quite a few of them... are allowing this....cx and.uk are the most famous ones that I can think of.
personally I'd like to see the TLD of.gov open up:-)
Man I love how everyone with a computer company can scare anyone else with the magical word of "Lawsuit". Well Apple Insider seems to have been the ones to get hit with what they claim is legal action against the online magazine.
And if they're so inside why exactly did they get the okay to run the mouse, but not the pictures?... Looks like the bluff was called though the paper shredder/washing machine would have made a really great workstation...
Remember the days when it was cool to paint your box or just get a bunch of stickers?
Anyone who has played mortal combat, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, or Super Mario Brothers, should know that they've made movies themed to these games and the soundtracks are all remixed. Also does anyone remember how mortal combat became one of the largest dance songs around?
I personally broadcast a radio show via the internet because it's free and I can. The reason I don't do it via public access or radio is the licensing fees or broadcasting fees that come along with that. I'm not an Australlian, but I'm sure there are people from Australlia with the same situation as me and I know I wouldn't take kindly to a situation such as this.
I've seen these cases come and go, but what I don't understand is with the $70+ dollars that was spent to start peta.org do they get that money back or do they just have to turn the name over?
And why can't you register pita.cx or pita.to... would you have to take it to international courts?
and I like eating burgers:-)
Insightful? ... Damn near profound...

Finally the little engine that could programmers guide to reality. just because it's already been done doesn't mean you can't do it better or your own way.
I'm going to install this OS and have some fun with it... I install OS's just because I can... and I like all Operating Systems because it's something new to try out.
I looked through all 20,000 images and noticed they left out all the martians. Now what kind of PR is this really? I mean if I were going to want you to visit my planet wouldn't you want to see more than the scenary? Granted with an atomosphere that isn't breatheable and that whole problem of it taking three years to get there... there really isn't any reason as to why this couldn't be a prime area for vacationing. If NASA was trying to impress me they truly failed... there's no way that I would ever go there especially with the complete lack of staff...
Well that's just grand... until of course Sony tries to file as many lawsuits as possible. Not to mention bleem doesn't handle games as well as the playstation (go figure) are they planning on porting a stable version of bleem to the dreamcast? When I say stable I mean standardized and taking advantage of dreamcast only processes.
What about M.A.M.E. for dreamcast... now that would be cool. Didn't someone port MAME to a digital camera??
I just want Linux and Mozilla ported to Dreamcast, then I'll buy one.
Well anyways looking at the picture... a dog bone THAT big had to take one helluva arm to throw... I mean imagine the size of the dog... would the earth be the size of a large beach ball in comparison?
Guess you'd have to know the size of the dog first... lets say it's a great dane (erm GALATICAL great dane rather). And it's name is Super Spot.
Now if you were Super Spot wouldn't it piss you off to have to run from universe to universe to run after this thing? I mean heck I dun even like to run period, let alone at like warp 8...
Let's consider there really is no dog that is bigger than jupiter (Really going out on a limb here). Then let's consider someone really likes to write with HEAVY sarcasm. And this person makes really NO sense and mentally notes the joke is going no where....
I do believe I posted about this before. Without any means to trace or stop distribution of files illegal files will run rampid on systems giving free reign to anyone who wants them. This does involve copyrighted material and other lude materials.
I think condemned.org has it right on actually doing something besides complain about kiddie porn. They not only take a stand they do something about it. I am very proud of this group .
There needs to be a to moderate distributed file systems. If theres not then we will have a problem. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
I would really like to know how much money you're really losing to mp3's. Mp3's are far from portable when compared to a CD and they're also quite large for anyone on a modem to get them. How come you haven't gone after the people who lend tapes to their friends?
I have purchased a number of your CD's and I really do enjoy your music, but taking a stand against napster and maybe even being the who ultimately destroys the company, you will become an enemy to the people around the world who use napster.
Is that a bad thing? I guess not, there are laws being broken and people are willfully and knowingly breaking them. So are you in the wrong, I say no, but you're not going to find too many happy people.
BTW have you ever thought of releasing some of your unreleased tracks as Mp3's on your website to prove that you don't hate computer users, you just dislike piraters.
I'm getting one of these so I can take my computer anywhere I go. Let's face it you can find a monitor at almost every house. So just because you can't use it when you're on an airplane doesn't mean it doesn't hold as a viable computer.
It's not meant to be a labtop or to be mistaken as one... it's a computer that is tiny... that's about it...
I want one so I can show people "What linux is" just plug my computer into their monitor and keyboard and there we go... I have a working example.
Hey just because MS doesn't release source. Okay just because every commercial vendor doesn't release the source code doesn't mean that we have to learn to hate it.
Though I would strongly suggest against using Windows if that source code was ever released. The problems with MS are bad enough... just imagine the exploits that would come if the source was released.
I think commercial vendors are afraid of being embarassed more-so than having their software copied illegally.
watch your kernel messages when you first boot linux up... I focus mainly on the networking protocols (ex. Appletalk and IPX/SPX) they both give advertisements of who created them...
When you load uup any certain distribution it will give the website of the distro in the boot sequence as well. Or it will already have netscape configured to go to their site.
In the world today finding a domain name and then making useful code really isn't that uncommon...
Well it seems that science can't be the one responsible for trolls. So what phenomenon do we blame for the existance?
We could try to blame science or engineers, but even with the best biomedical and genetic engineers at work... it would be years before we could ever find the true base of the existance of trolls.
What about a beowulf cluster out of one of these?
I looked all around the first posts and couldn't find this one... though Natalie Portman did manage to get mentioned:-)
But in all seriousness... how could you ever manage to mention the greatest accomplishments in engineering? There's so many things.. But my favorite was number 13... we all know Al Gore is to thank for the internet... not engineers... just ask al gore...
Of course GTK, QT, or whatever library you want to make lack cross-distro/system compatability, but they run pretty well on the systems they were intended for.
I don't think that Java is the key to anything as I don't think everything should be formatted to XML or that TCL is the ultimate cross scripting language.
programs that are operating system specific are that way for the reason that they are meant to be run on that operating system.
Ever try to fly... I did... it didn't work... no matter how many times I flapped my arms up and down I just couldn't get off the ground... I blame science and for good reason...
