"Going down to Colombia and BOMBING all of the cocoa fields there would accomplish more than anything else we've tried in the past 20 years. I'd love to see that done" --Zach'
I wonder if anyone around here thinks we could be using that money to treat drug addicts here in America. Or treat people who cannot afford medical insurance. Or fucking PAVE ROADS or whatever!!
oh god. what is that old statement about "remember the past or we are doomed to repeat it"?
We cannot control nuclear power. We _thought_ we might be able to, and that's why Three Mile Island and Chernobyl happened. Do we REALLY need more millenially contaminated areas on this already crowded planet?
The sad thing is; every nuclear submarine, aircraft carrier, and power plant is a horrible accident just waiting to happen. All I can do is hope the next one doesn't happen near me and that its fallout dissipates before it blows over me. It would suck to have hair falling out in patches, bleeding soft tissues, and teeth falling out.
"The world needs less violence and more love and I don't see how guns do anything to accomplish that."
I am not religious, but I must heartily agree with that statement.
Think people! If everybody had guns, what would stop one guy from coming up behind you, shooting you through the back of the head, and taking your money? Do you really want to have to be on guard, with your finger on the trigger 24 hours a day? Do the police NEED to all be issued high speed automatic weapons to stay abreast of what the criminals have? Think about the consequences of the world you propose! The old west, many people had gus...and many people were SHOT!! Stop frothing at the mouth, and think about it!
Idiot. I doubt that even a significant minority of the regular readers of/. have killfiltered _anyone_. Any person, regardless of whether you agreed with what they have said in the past may have someting valuable to say in the future. I'm sure you are all the the same "parrots" who screech about free speech issues too. Hypocrites. Stop trying to be cool ok boys? Try to contribute. If anything kills the interesting banter here, its YOUR Katz-bashing, and all the whining about moderation.
There is an IRC style chat capability installed with the program. Granted, many people may not care to hear anything new or independent, but saying that there is no way you could find a new band on Napster is not true.
I do think that some people would go in the genre chat rooms and try new stuff. Who knows, maybe in a year or two, after everyone has been saturated by the top 40 crap, they will start getting hungry fo something new.
Drugs are usually chemical. Music consists of sound waves aranged in a pattern. Quite different. If you could get a stunning high by stimulating your eardrums with a certain tone, would you expect to have to pay for the privelidge every time you listened to that tone? Oh wait, maybe that's pretty much what goes on now....
I for one do not necessarily condone obtaining someone else's creative works without ever compensating them, but in terms of the record company cartels (you provided an excellent metaphor there!), I don't give a rat's ass whether they lose a fucking million.
The thing is...they WON'T lose money. The piles of money they scoop in may become smaller, but the key is: NOTHING IS BEING STOLEN. The cash they have been hoarding for years and years will still be in the vault or Rolls Royce or whatever.
Music is more important to humanity than business. Music can improve your mood, calm you down, or make you want to dance. Money, on the other hand just makes you buy more crap, and probably want more money.
I think Nader would definitely be the least of all the evils we must choose. And TheCrap; are you an idiot!!?? Choosing not to choose certainly IS a choice; to let some 60 year old (who is guaranteed to voice his concerns and vote) negate your voice. "I refuse to vote" just smacks of indefference, apathy, and/or laziness. People DIED for this right you opine not to use!! Millions of people, RIGHT NOW, don't have it!! USE IT!!!
I don't think your conclusions are necesarily the only ones to be drawn. What we need is more discussion on these proposed policies; oh but thats right, we can't hear Nader or Buchanan debate Bore and Gush, because they aren't Dem or Rep!
"Geez, why don't third parties have a voice? Lemme see, Pat Buchanan, Ross Perot, or Ralph Nader. ..they're all whackjobs."
I wish you would elaborate on why Ralph Nader is a 'whackjob' as you so eloquently put it. He has selflessly done more for the public than any random sample of 1,000 other Americans combined. Legally required seat belts in automobiles? A result of his tireless determination. He is a true blue American. Read up on him, and then vote for him in November my fellow Americans! See this article: "Citizen Nader" on Salon.com:
In that deal with the FTC, the big 5 were allowed to change their policies with regards to MAPs (Minimum Advertised Prices) and eschew any admission of wrongdoing. Therefore, despite the great PR the FTC has been splooging all over, it would not be admissable in court. The usual IANAL applies, this is my understanding of it.
"It's interesting that copyright could be used in a way totally contrary to it's original intentions."
I hope you understand that this is actually copyright being RETURNED to its original intentions; giving a SHORT time of exclusivity to the creator of a work, so that more works may be brought into the PUBLIC domain, not be stuck in licensing limbo for 90+ years!
thank you for the correction. I certainly would not claim to be the grammar master, I just had to point out "Grammar Nazi"s ignorance. He has the balls to comment (meaning waste my reading time) on little nitpicky bullshit, and half the time he can't even get it correct himself. Moron.
"You must want the grammar nazi position real bad"
any one who REALLY knows Engrish, knows that -real- should be -REALLY- in the above sentence. You know, for a 'grammar nazi' you are REALLY an IDIOT. Your little bullshit story about being 'selected' is just so much daydreaming in calculus class, isn't it kid..... Some of your grammatical mistakes would make your teachers blanch and faint, "Grammar Nazi."
Credit is possibly the worst way you could possibly "survive". Just live within your means, and you will be much happier. Even if you can't get that forest green Explorer like 10 of the neighbors have.
"the things you own, end up owning you..." -quote from the Pro-Fascism hit of the year; Fight Club. Pretty awkward and kludgy movie, pretty damn hypocrytical too, what with Brad Pitt being the voice of anarchy, rebellion, anti-pop culture and anti-commercialism. Good quote fodder though.
"there are far worse things out there, spent ages trying to avoid people giving me URLs to some of the things that happened during the riots in Indonesia..."
...care to elaborate on this? I'm none but an ignorant American after all.. =)

Anyone know if this guy could be sued for bypassing the encrypted spyware?
you obviously did NOT read the Courtney Love article at Salon. She made some excellent points on these issues. NEXT TIME READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE POSTING!
thank you for posting this. It is good to know that there ARE people who have educated themselves on this subject.
This Zach guy is completely clueless on this, hopefully he will learn from this flaming and go learn a few things before yapping.
you did read Dr. Holland's speech on the maps site didn't you? Excellent stuff.
the MAPS speech
*gasp*

We have been doing this for many years Zach. And did you know we are providing the better part of $1.5 BILLION over the next three years for more of that>

This "Drug War" must STOP!!
"America will cheer in glee at another battle won in the war on drugs"
I agree with most of your comment but there have been no battles won in the war against drugs, only casualties.
If you are interested, take a look here:Salon.com article on one of these casualties

The price of democracy apparently is not only eternal vigilance, it's also an overly litigous society. Rome was the same way. Guess we gotta deal.
Oh please. STFU with your pseudo-intelligent racist doubletalk. Brain-size. Bullshit.
Robotech was just plain cool. My buddy was completely in love with Lynn Minmae (sp?) but I just was annoyed by her. Let's start a Minmae flame war!!
That movie was sooo cool. I need to buy it on a high resolution video disk, maybe even a DVD if I have to.
