Sounds like you went into the wrong area with your anecdotal evidence. I'll give mine then.
I started off I the utility sector working with controls (production engineer, then a system engineer) and now work in manufacturing in controls. Salary was at $90k after six years and I'm on track to pay off all of my loans early (half were paid off in less than five). That was with $55k in student loan debt.
I get contacted by recruiters every one-two weeks about jobs either working at power or manufacturing plants or doing design work/contract work. Some of those jobs would be travel, but not all.
I can see your point about losing some of your college experience, as I do not do heavy math anymore and work on PLC and Visual Basic programming, along with some power work. The core concepts still get used but in a qualitative way, especially when having to troubleshoot system issues.
I love what I actually do, as I get to do some small-scale design work and get time out in the field pulling wire, troubleshooting with a fluke meter, messing with PLCs and robotics.
Anyways, I'm sorry you feel like you got a bad wrap, but based on the peers I worked with in the nuclear industry and now in manufacturing not every electrical engineer is doomed to middle management. Some of us actually like what we do or have no desire to head up that way. Also a lot of us cannot be easily outsourced.
If I worked in automotive, then that would be another story salary and enjoyment-wise : )
You know, alot of the comments here show that the "groupthink tools" mentality has really sunk in here. For Christ sakes, they are changing something that people bitch about here, only for people to COMPLETELY SIDE STEP WHAT THE DISCUSSION IS ABOUT and bitch about other things unrelated to it, just to fluff their epeen on anything anti-MS.
I am glad to see that some people are actually saying something positive, ie that Microsoft is actually...um, you know...playing fair and recognizing they have competition. Thank you for helping support insightful discussions (which my post certainly is not!:))
First, kudos to the team for their release of FreeBSD 6.0. This one seems to be much smoother then the 5.X releases (I used 6.0-RC1 for a bit), so the best to them.
My question is pertaining to VPN support. I would love to install this on my laptop (Inspiron 4000, so everything works:)), but at my University they use VPN for wireless connectivity. I can use Bluesocket to connect wirelessly as well, but that only allows access to ports 80 / 22 (one other, for email),so I would prefer VPN. I was wondering if there was a VPN client alternative for FreeBSD, since the Cisco Systems one cannot be installed to my knowledge. Thanks!
Everywhere? Head to my school (University of Michigan), and you will not find a floppy machine on any over our CAEN (Engineering) machines! With networked tools such as NAS and AFS, which our mounted under Windows/Unix/Linux automatically, and the rarer USB drives being used, there isnt a reason for them.
My computer as well used to have a floppy drive, but it broke and I havent seen a need to fix it:)
Infringing on proprietary technology? They do considerable cross-licensing,which by this news report states that "their deal since 1976" will be continuing until 2011. And what are these anti-competitive practices you speak of? Sounds like someones fishing....
First massive PVP Battleground? Dark Age of Camelot has done this for awhile (its one of their major selling points of the game)...albeit the rewards for World of Warcraft seem more enticing to me:)
Well, I thought this more to be humorous than informative...I am not quite sure what vigilante mission the mods are on today:) If I have some points when I log in I'll make amends to your score
I do not think this would be a very good idea. This would give people an incentive to call on a whim for EVERY marketing call that they would receive in hopes of getting a chunk of the FTC fine pie. Even if the call originates from legitimate places like non-profit agencies, or for an example a utility company they do business with that is calling for a contract renewal, greedy ass people will STILL phone them as illegitimate spam calls for that chance to get their 'honest cut' of the fine.
This also in turn will heap crap onto the pile of legitimate complaints that are filed, thus slowing down the process of punishement for the FTC to actually fine companies that are doing wrong.
Apparently slashdot mobile didn't like the enter keys I put in. Sorry for the run-on...
