    No role ? ha ... Sweden was forced to be Germany main supplier of iron during WWII. What do you think would happen if they refused to play that role ?

    Yeah. Except it was not based on humanitarian feeling but cold calculations. If Europe were to be permamently lost to either Hitler or Stalin America would be next target.

    UN ? You know what ... UN is a big joke and its actions are completely irrelevant...
    NATO is what keeps world together and will for foreseable future.
    I personally was against any US intervention in former Yugoslavia. This particular action was mostly caused by the problems that Clinton had here in US and was quite typical way of handling issues by this coward ( yep, our current president is a complete joke.)

    I truly hope that whoever takes over the office next year ( most likely Bush) will have much more dignity and , well, will simply be much more honest as a human being ...

    I don't know much about current state of affairs regarding EU but, aren't you afraid that biger fishes like Germany, France or England will dominate this union and try to exploit it to their benefit ?
    Yugoslavia ? Hmm, isn't that in Europe ? I thought France and England had enough dimplomatic leverage or firepower (pick you choice) to handle this issue on their own.
    If they are unable to do that then it is a bit hipocrytical to blame US for not doing enough ...
    You can't have it both ways.

    As to the forcing legislations, oh well, everybiody does that. This is called "cyvilized way of protecting national interest" or some such ...
    (Beside, there are priviledges of being the biggets wolf in the pack.. :-)

    Yes, yes. It is very nice and dandy over there in Europe but tell my my friend, how come US is always ahead when it comes to developing new technologies in most fields ? Let's look at our own backyard - computers. The last time Europe came up with something interesting was ZX Spectrum
    (btw, based on American cpu.) Not much else I guess ...
    Despite your bitching there is got to be something that we are doing right, don't you think ?

    They got to be aimed at somebody , you know ..
    USA or China are the only countries large enough to be dangerous to Russia. Beside , people tend to be lazy, once you keep something in certain state for 30 years then why bother changing that.

    No they don't yet. But, according to RMS, ultimate goal is to do away with copyright laws and thus forcing everybody to release under GPL.

    I do hope it won't happen. Otherwise people will stop innovating. If you have no powerfull motivation forcing you to behave certain way, you will not push yourself to achieve more.

    The idea is quite nice but unfortunately unworkable. In this scenario the main driving force , greed, is gone and people being what they are, there will be extremely large surplus of those who want to benefit without contributing anything to the system. Right now it works because most of the free software is being financed by old fashioned proprietary businesses (really, most of the programmers involved in writing various open source projects have daily jobs working for commercial entities and therefore can afford writing free software.)

    They are not Marxists, of course. Linus and ESR have no idea how to run profitable business ( I don't think Linus cares about that much anyway.)
    ESR likes to present himself as sort of business advisor for people and companies new to GPL. He is all about theory and not much about practice.
    RMS is , on the other hand, quite dangerous. If he got his way we would all be forced to use GPL (copyright completely eliminated) and that is just plain madness on the same level as Marxism, Communism.

    Yes. It is a political ideology. One that doesn't work. The reason it doesn't work has nothing to do with implementation but more with human character. One of the most powerfull forces driving people is greed ( very powerfull and constructive force at that .) Communism tries to modify this natural behavior which is basically impossible task.

    That's true. But once something is GPL, everybody can benefit from my work, regardless of their contribution to the "system". This is precisely why communism doesn't work.
