The Slash code has little value... You could easily hire bunch of consultants and have exactly the same thing (but with much better code ) done in about two months. It is./ site that is valuable asset.
You won't see much comming out of this... No matter how good programmer you are , there is simply not enough time to understand the code and be able to contribute something meaningfull.
I think this is going to be failure. There is simply not enough time to get into the code this size and actually be able to understand (without any guidance) enough to be able to fix or even extend it. Not in 48 hours...
They should follow this with something along these lines but in C++. Possibly something explaining how to wrap or, even better, reimplement algorithms written C in C++.
Accelerated XFree under 770 ? You got to be kidding. Trident XFree driver is as slow as it gets. I have also NT there and it is like night and day. Actually, it was - now I have AcceleratedX and it is just like under NT. Sweet.
What's wrong with you ? Why would you want to switch to XFree and put up with slower X ? I mean, you already paid for AcceleratedX. Run some X11perf and both servers and decide for yourself.
It would be much smarter for them to specify set of common commands like pkgadd, pkgremove etc that would be implement transparently on every conforming linux system. On Redhat it would basically use RPM on Debian DEBs etc.. That way one would could simply say "Download package for your system(RPM,DEB whatever), type pkgadd name and you are done"
I think KDE 2.0 will be based on Qt 2.0. And yes there are enough differences between 1.44 and 2.0 that would make trying to port current version of KDE rather large task.
Oh, come one. There always will be people who would rather use something else and therefore unless somebody decides on something will always lack any sort of standard.
Yep. It is quit nice asumming one likes CDE type enviroment. To tell the truth, I am kinda surprised that this software has not received more attention. It must be related to the fact that many people aren't interested in CDE.
Regarding X issue I would rather favor distribution that comes by default with AcceleratedX - supports many more cards and it is much faster then XFree. ( and the price would be cheaper given wide enough distribution)
What I mean by that is a setup where everything is disabled, no services running, nothing. Just like your average Windows box but even with no SMB... 90 % of users at home don't need anything - everything they do is conducted either thru browser or client programs (mail, IRC) and those don't need anything listening on the local host.
You know what.. I think it will be easier for game companies to port games to BeOS than , say Linux. At least BeOS has a nice clean API one can code to and be reasonable sure that his code will run using all the hardware support available on given machine.
It is easy to support this kind of game. Try doing something more graphic intensive and you will see that , in this regard, Linux is nothing but the headache for the developers. We are in the position DOS based games developers were about 10 years ago...
We are not talking about the CLI here. The main problem is that there are no standards (APIs) in place that would allow game companies to code to and be resonable sure that their games will take advantage of the all hardware available under this OS.
I know this was a flamebait but, to tell the truth, you are basically correct. Currently, Linux lacks any widespread standard for creating high performance games. This situation reminds me of early 1990s on Windows 3.11 and DOS. There were nice games back then but every game company had their own way of doing things which resulted in terrible headache for the customers ( dozens of different autoexec.bat files etc..) It has to change and it has to be done at the OS level ( possible XFree 4.0 will bring some sort of solution, don't know much about that yet - will see)

Move it by land or something like that ..

Hehehe ... I do that sometimes. Just reading the headline and not actually article. ..
Sometimes it can backfire like in your case here

This guy is having loads of fun. I bet he knows that everything he says will be reported here on /. and of course, it was reported.
"greatly exaggerated".
Bla bla bla and one more time bla.

Stupid moderators .. ..
This post was actually funny

Finally somebody recognized that in most computers being used at home, security is only unnecesary junk that nobody really uses. ...!
Way to go
NT is an alternative for departamental servers and such ..
Quite nice alternative at that ( it is changing now with Linux on the horizont )
No. I mean Sweden. It was not occupied by Germans but it was forced to become major supplier of iron.

So you are not gratefull ? Whatever the reason we saved your country. It does count, you know...

Hehhe. one hell of a agreement, woudn't you think.
I would rather call that ultimatum.
